What is Vivaha Muhurat?
Vivaha Muhurat, or wedding timing, is one of the most critical calculations in Vedic Astrology. Marriage is a sacred sacrament (Samskara) that binds two souls, and the time of the wedding ceremony (Pani Grahana) significantly influences the harmony, longevity, and prosperity of the union.
A Shubh Vivaha Muhurat is calculated by analyzing the Panchang details (Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga) along with the planetary positions and the horoscopes of the bride and groom. Specifically, Jupiter (Guru) and Venus (Shukra) must not be combust (Asta) or in infancy/old age (Balya/Vriddha). The Ascendant (Lagna) at the time of marriage should be strong and free from malefic influences.
Our Vivaha Muhurat Calculator finds the most auspicious wedding dates and times for your specific location. We filter out inauspicious periods like Chaturmas (for some traditions), Adhik Maas, and ensuring the Moon and Chandrashtama are favorable for the couple.
What is a Vivaha Muhurat?
A Vivaha Muhurat is the auspicious date and time chosen for a Hindu wedding, when the Pani Grahana (joining of hands) and other rites are performed. It is fixed by studying the Panchang, the strength of the Ascendant (Vivaha Lagna), and the horoscopes of both the bride and groom.
Selecting the right window is considered one of the most important electional decisions in Vedic astrology, as tradition holds that the moment the marriage is sealed shapes the harmony and longevity of the union.
Which factors determine an auspicious wedding Muhurat?
A favourable wedding Muhurat combines a benefic Tithi, an auspicious Nakshatra and Yoga, and a suitable weekday, with the Vivaha Lagna free from malefic affliction. Crucially, Jupiter (Guru) and Venus (Shukra) should not be combust (Asta) or in infancy or old age, since they signify marital happiness.
The couple's own positions also matter: the Moon should be well placed for both, and Chandrashtama (the eighth Nakshatra from either birth Moon) is avoided so the day supports the bride and groom individually.
Which periods are avoided for marriage?
Certain periods are traditionally excluded for weddings, most notably Chaturmas beginning at Dev Shayani Ekadashi, when Vishnu is said to sleep and marriages are paused in many traditions. The intercalary lunar month Adhik Maas (Malmas) is likewise set aside for auspicious sacraments.
Astrologers also avoid eclipses, the shadow interval of Bhadra, and days when Jupiter or Venus are combust, preferring solar months such as Vaisakha, Jyeshtha, Magha and Phalguna for the ceremony.
