What are Planetary Transits (Gochara)?

Planetary transits, known as Gochara in Vedic astrology, refer to the current positions of planets as they move through the zodiac and form aspects to your birth chart planets. While your birth chart remains fixed, transiting planets continuously influence different areas of your life as they pass through various houses from your Moon sign.

The effects of transits vary based on the transiting planet, the house it is passing through, and its relationship with your natal planets. Saturn transit (Sade Sati), Jupiter transit, and Rahu-Ketu axis changes are particularly significant as they bring major life themes lasting months to years.

Our Transit Calculator shows real-time planetary positions and their effects on your birth chart. Understand current cosmic influences, favorable periods for important decisions, and challenging times requiring patience. Combine transit analysis with your Dasha periods for precise timing of life events.

What is a planetary transit (Gochar)?

A planetary transit, called Gochar in Vedic astrology, is the current position of a planet in the sky read against your birth chart. While the natal chart is fixed at birth, the grahas keep moving, and their present placements are traditionally measured from the natal Moon sign (Rashi) to judge their day-to-day influence.

The effect of any transit depends on which planet is moving, which house it occupies counted from the Moon, and how it relates to the natal planets. Slow-moving planets such as Saturn and Jupiter mark the most significant, long-lasting themes.

What is Sade Sati?

Sade Sati is the roughly 7.5-year period during which Saturn transits the 12th, 1st, and 2nd houses counted from the natal Moon sign. Because Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign, its passage across these three signs surrounding the Moon totals approximately seven and a half years.

It unfolds in three phases and is popularly associated with hardship, but classically it is understood as a time of discipline, responsibility, and maturity. Its actual results depend on Saturn's strength and placement in the individual birth chart.

How do Jupiter and Saturn transits differ in effect?

Jupiter and Saturn differ in both speed and character. Jupiter spends about one year in each sign and is the great benefic, so its transits are generally associated with expansion, growth, opportunity, wisdom, and support in the houses it activates from the Moon.

Saturn moves far more slowly, staying about two and a half years in a sign, and is the great taskmaster. Its transits tend to bring restriction, delay, hard work, and lasting lessons. Reading the two together shows where growth and where discipline are being emphasized at once.
