Gandmool Dosha Calculator — Nakshatra, Pada and Shanti Dates

The six stars come in three pairs, one pair on each water-fire seam. The first star of each pair, at the end of a water sign, is ruled by Mercury. The second, at the start of a fire sign, is ruled by Ketu. That pattern is why many astrologers read Gandmool births as carrying a Mercury-Ketu theme of sharp intellect paired with detachment.

The texts do not treat every Gandmool birth alike. Each star is split into four padas of 3°20', and each pada has its own traditional reading, usually naming the family member it is said to affect. The version below is the one printed in most Hindi panchangs. Regional versions differ in a few cells, so treat it as the tradition's voice, not a forecast about your family.

Notice how many quarters are favourable. Ashwini 2 to 4, Magha 3 and 4, Mula 4 and Revati 1 to 3 are all read as good fortune for the child. The quarters that touch the junction itself, the gandanta padas, are the ones the texts take most seriously.

Gandanta is the knot itself: the last pada of Revati, Ashlesha and Jyeshtha and the first pada of Ashwini, Magha and Mula, the 6°40' straddling each seam. A Moon in these quarters is the classical Gandmool case. Some astrologers also look at the ascendant or other planets on a seam, and the calculator lists those for completeness, but Gandmool itself is judged from the Moon.

Abhukta Mula is narrower still. It is the stretch of about two ghatis (48 minutes) on either side of the exact Jyeshtha-Mula junction, which muhurta literature singles out as the most sensitive moment in the whole zodiac. Because the Moon travels roughly 13 degrees a day but not at a constant speed, this calculator works out the time from the Moon's real speed at birth rather than a fixed degree range.

Traditionally on the 27th day after birth, when the Moon first returns to the nakshatra it was in at birth. In North India this is often called the Sattaisa (twenty-seven) puja. It includes worship of the star's deity, water gathered from many sources, a set of herbs, and repetition of the nakshatra mantra, and it is usually done by the family priest.

If the 27th day has passed, and for adults who learn about their Gandmool later, the shanti can be done on any later day when the Moon is in the same star, which happens once every 27 to 28 days. The calculator lists the exact start and end times of the next three windows for your star, in your birth timezone.

The honest answer is that it is a traditional caution, not a diagnosis. More than a fifth of all babies are born in these stars, and many of the readings are favourable. Where the reading does name a family member, the tradition's answer is the shanti, done calmly and on the right day, not worry.

Some families keep a custom that the affected parent should not see the baby's face until the shanti. It is a regional custom rather than a rule from the texts, and many priests no longer insist on it. If it would separate a parent from a newborn, ask your priest whether the shanti can simply be done at the first return.

The Moon crosses a whole pada in about six hours and a whole nakshatra in about a day. A birth time that is off by even half an hour can move the Moon across a pada boundary near the edge of a star, and near a junction it can decide whether a child is Gandmool at all. Use the time on the hospital record, and if the result says the birth was within an hour of a boundary, it is worth confirming the time.
