Every house has a lord, the planet that rules the sign on its cusp. Wherever that planet sits, it takes the affairs of its own house with it. The 7th lord in the 10th house links marriage to career; the 5th lord in the 9th joins two houses of fortune. Twelve lords in twelve houses make 144 combinations, and each one has its own guide below.

Choose a lord, then the house it occupies

As a rough guide, a lord does well in a Kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) or Trikona (1, 5, 9) and struggles in a Dusthana (6, 8, 12). The exception runs the other way: the lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th placed in any of those three houses form a Vipareeta Raja Yoga, where one difficult house cancels another.
