What does this love compatibility calculator measure?
Most zodiac compatibility calculators return a percentage that nobody can check. This one scores any two signs on the two tests from Vedic marriage matching that read nothing but the signs themselves, and shows the rule behind every point. Graha Maitri compares the planets that rule the two signs and is worth 5 points. Bhakoot counts the distance from one sign to the other and is worth 7. Together they make a 12-point sign score, and the percentage you see is that score out of 12.
Beside it sits the Western reading of the same pair: the aspect the two signs form, their elements and their modalities. The two traditions often agree, and when they do not, the calculator says so. That disagreement is usually the most interesting part of the result.
The order does not matter. Both tests give the same answer whichever sign you enter first, so there is no way to get a better score by swapping.
How the 12-point sign score works
Graha Maitri reads the relationship between the two ruling planets in both directions, because natural planetary friendship is not symmetric. Mars counts the Moon a friend, for example, while the Moon is only neutral towards Mars. Two signs ruled by the same planet, such as Aries and Scorpio, score the full 5.
Bhakoot counts from one sign to the other. The count always comes as a pair, and seven pairs exist. Four pass and score all 7 points; three fail and score nothing. There is no partial credit, so about half of all random pairings lose these seven points. When they are lost, the tradition recognises two cancellations: both signs sharing a lord, or the two lords being friends in both directions. Of the 36 sign pairings that fail Bhakoot, 17 carry one of these cancellations.

Where Western and Vedic compatibility disagree
The two traditions rate some pairings in opposite directions. Western astrology treats same-element trines as the easiest contact and oppositions as a strain. Vedic Bhakoot fails the trine and passes the opposition. So Aries and Leo, a Western favourite, lose their Bhakoot points, while Aries and Libra, a Western opposition, keep all seven.
Neither is simply right. The Western reading describes how two temperaments meet; the Vedic tests describe the conditions of a shared household. When the calculator reports that the traditions disagree, it is telling you which question each one is answering.
What a sign score cannot tell you
Twelve points are a third of the 36-point Guna Milan. The rest need more than a sign. Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi read each partner's birth star, which the Moon changes about once a day, so they need a birth time. Nadi alone is worth 8 points and fails for roughly one couple in three.
A high sign score is a good sign rather than a verdict, and a low one is a reason to look closer rather than to walk away. For marriage, the full Kundali Matching and a reading of each chart's 7th house and Navamsa say far more than any pair of signs can.
