What is Guru Chandal Dosha?
Guru Chandal Dosha, also called Guru Chandal Yoga, forms when Jupiter and Rahu occupy the same sign in a birth chart. Guru is Jupiter, the teacher, the planet of wisdom, dharma, children and good counsel. Chandala is the old word for someone outside the bounds of orthodox society, and Rahu, a shadow planet with no body of its own, carries that role in the chart. The image is of the teacher sharing a seat with the outsider.
What that produces is not simply bad. Rahu magnifies whatever it touches and pulls it toward the unconventional, so the pair can make someone question every inherited belief, learn from unusual teachers, study abroad or work in fields the family never imagined. The difficulty the tradition warns about is judgement: advice taken from the wrong people, ethics bent for gain, or a loss of faith that is never replaced by anything steadier.

How is Guru Chandal Dosha formed?
The one rule every school agrees on is Jupiter and Rahu in the same sign. Beyond that, the tradition splits, and it is worth knowing where. Some modern writers extend the name to Jupiter with Ketu. Others count Rahu's aspect on Jupiter from the 5th, 7th or 9th sign. Neither extension is part of the core rule, and the nodal aspect in particular is a later convention that many Parashari astrologers do not use.

What makes Guru Chandal stronger or weaker?
The degree gap matters most. Within five degrees the two grahas act almost as one; beyond ten degrees in the same sign they share a house more than a nature. Jupiter's condition matters next: debilitated in Capricorn, or combust close to the Sun, it has little to hold Rahu back with.
On the other side, Jupiter in its own signs (Sagittarius and Pisces) or exalted in Cancer keeps the upper hand, and Rahu then tends to widen Jupiter's reach rather than corrupt it. Rahu placed in a sign Jupiter rules works for its dispositor. Jupiter in a kendra or trikona from the ascendant keeps its protective strength, and a second benefic such as Venus, Mercury or the Moon in the same sign dilutes Rahu's influence.

The house the pair occupies decides where the theme shows up in life. The 5th and 9th are the heaviest placements because they are Jupiter's own natural houses of children, study and dharma. The 3rd, 6th and 11th are the most workable, because Rahu does well in houses of effort and gain.

Is Guru Chandal Yoga always bad?
No, and a good reading will not pretend otherwise. Rahu is the planet of the foreign, the new and the taboo, and Jupiter is the planet of knowledge. Together they describe many researchers, reformers, people who study or teach abroad, and people who become teachers of subjects their family considered strange. The risk is not intelligence or success. It is trusting the wrong guide, or deciding that because one tradition failed you, no principle is worth holding.
That is why the traditional remedies are mostly about respect: for teachers, for elders and for sincere belief, including beliefs you do not share.
When does Guru Chandal Dosha activate?
Most strongly in the Jupiter Mahadasha (16 years) and the Rahu Mahadasha (18 years), and above all in the Jupiter-Rahu and Rahu-Jupiter sub-periods, when both grahas are running your time together. Transits of Jupiter or Rahu over the natal pair can also bring it forward for a year or so. Your result lists the dasha windows with their dates.
Remedies for Guru Chandal Dosha
Begin with the simple and free: the Brihaspati mantra "Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah" on Thursday mornings, service to teachers and elders, and yellow donations such as chana dal, turmeric or bananas on Thursdays. For the Rahu side, "Om Raam Rahave Namah" on Saturdays with a donation of black sesame.
A formal Guru-Rahu shanti puja is usually advised only for a tight conjunction with a weak Jupiter. Do not buy a yellow sapphire because of this dosha alone. Gemstones strengthen a planet for good or ill, and a stronger Jupiter sitting with Rahu can simply give Rahu more to work with. Have the whole chart read first.
