What is Vimshottari Dasha?

Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used planetary period system in Vedic astrology for timing life events and predictions. The word "Vimshottari" means 120 years, representing the total cycle of all nine planetary periods. Each planet rules a specific number of years, and during its Mahadasha (major period), that planet's significations become prominent in your life.

The Dasha sequence begins from your Moon's Nakshatra at birth and follows a fixed order: Ketu (7 years), Venus (20 years), Sun (6 years), Moon (10 years), Mars (7 years), Rahu (18 years), Jupiter (16 years), Saturn (19 years), and Mercury (17 years). Understanding your current Dasha helps you prepare for upcoming opportunities and challenges.

Our Dasha Calculator provides detailed Mahadasha, Antardasha (sub-period), and Pratyantardasha (sub-sub-period) timelines with interpretations. Know which planetary periods are active now and what to expect in the coming years based on ancient Vedic principles.

How is the Vimshottari Dasha calculated?

The Vimshottari Dasha is a 120-year cycle calculated from the nakshatra occupied by the Moon at birth. Each of the 27 nakshatras is ruled by one of nine planets, and the ruler of the birth nakshatra sets which Mahadasha (major period) is running at birth and the order that follows.

The nine periods have fixed lengths that always total 120 years: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, and Mercury 17. They always run in that sequence, cycling continuously through life.

What is an Antardasha (sub-period)?

An Antardasha is a sub-period within a Mahadasha. Every major period is divided into nine Antardashas, one for each planet, running in the same Vimshottari order and beginning with the Mahadasha lord itself. This creates a planet-within-a-planet layer of timing.

The length of each Antardasha is proportional to both planets involved, so a sub-period lasts longer when either the ruling Mahadasha planet or the Antardasha planet has a larger share of the 120-year cycle. The interaction between the two lords refines the prediction for that stretch of time.

What is the balance of Dasha at birth?

The balance of Dasha is the portion of the first Mahadasha still remaining at the moment of birth. Because a person is almost never born at the exact start of a nakshatra, the ruling planet's period is already partly elapsed, and only the unspent fraction is experienced after birth.

This balance is found from how far the Moon has already travelled through its birth nakshatra: the proportion of the nakshatra still ahead is multiplied by that planet's total Dasha years. An accurate Moon position, and therefore an accurate birth time, is essential to get it right.
