A Muhurat is a time unit of approximately 48 minutes, and there are 30 Muhurats in a day. A Muhurat is an auspicious window of time chosen for an important activity, and as a unit it equals roughly 48 minutes, with 30 Muhurats making up a single day. In electional astrology (Muhurta), the right moment is selected from the Panchang so that cosmic conditions support the endeavour, whether it is a marriage, a business launch, or the purchase of property.
Selecting a Muhurat means reading the limbs of the Panchang for the chosen date and time and confirming that they align favourably for that specific act rather than for activities in general.
How is an auspicious Muhurat selected?
An auspicious Muhurat is selected by checking the five Panchang factors together: Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga, Karana, and Vara (weekday). These are weighed alongside the planetary positions and the rising Ascendant (Lagna) at the moment in question.
Because each activity favours particular Nakshatras and Tithis, the ideal time aligns a beneficial star and lunar day with a strong, unafflicted Lagna, so that the chart cast for the event itself is sound.
Which periods make a Muhurat inauspicious?
A Muhurat is rendered inauspicious when it falls in a recurring malefic period, most notably Rahu Kaal, along with Yamagandam and Gulika Kaal, which are avoided for beginnings. Certain Tithis, adverse Yogas, and the Vishti (Bhadra) Karana are also traditionally rejected.
A weak or afflicted Ascendant can spoil an otherwise favourable time as well, which is why a good Muhurat requires the absence of these blemishes in addition to positive Panchang factors.
