Sun in 1st House: The Karaka in Its Own House
Every other house the Sun can occupy shares its indicator duties with another graha. The first house does not, so the rule about a karaka spoiling the house it signifies has nothing here to soften it.

Sun Across All 12 Houses
View All 12 Placements Directory →Sun in 1st house puts the natural indicator of the self into the house that already signifies the self, and Jyotish has a name for that arrangement. Karako bhavo nashti says a bhava suffers from the presence of its own karaka. Surya signifies the body, the constitution and the standing a person carries into a room before they speak, so setting it in Tanu Bhava doubles the signal and damages the thing it doubles. What you get is command, paid for out of health and out of the capacity to bend.
What Sun in the 1st House Actually Changes
The rule bites harder here than in the two other houses it touches, for a countable reason. Parashara hands most bhavas more than one karaka. The tenth has four. The ninth has two. The first has exactly one, so there is no second indicator to spread the distortion across and the whole load sits on a single point.
In a life this reads as a person who cannot be in a room quietly. The bearing is upright, the gaze holds longer than is comfortable, and the forehead is usually the feature people describe first. Greying starts early and the hairline goes back rather than thin. None of that is flattery or insult, it is what a fire graha does when it governs the shape of the body.
The cost lands on adaptability. A first-house Sun cannot take instruction in a tone it reads as condescending, and it reads a great many tones that way. Careers stall on that trait more often than on any lack of ability.
Where Mercury and Venus are forced to sit
Surya fixes where the two inner planets are allowed to sit, and no other graha does anything of the kind. Mercury never gets further than about twenty-eight degrees from the Sun, so with the Sun in the first house Budha has to be in the 12th, the 1st or the 2nd and nowhere else. Venus reaches about forty-eight degrees, which buys it two houses in each direction, so Shukra is confined to the 11th, 12th, 1st, 2nd or 3rd. Intellect and pleasure both end up parked on or beside the ascendant.
Own sign, exaltation and fall, by ascendant
Three, and the reason is ownership. Most of the grahas hold two signs apiece and collect four dignity ascendants between them; Surya owns Leo alone, so it has one own sign, one exaltation in Aries and one fall in Libra. Leo rising puts the Sun in its own sign on the ascendant as lord of the ascendant, which is the version people mean by a royal placement. Aries rising gives exaltation on the lagna, and since Surya then rules the 5th, an exalted fifth lord in the first is strong for intelligence and for children. Libra rising debilitates it there while it rules the 11th, so the fall shows up in income and friendships rather than in the body.
Effects on the Body, Work and Relationships
Eyes, head and heat
Surya governs the eyes, and the classical assignment is specific: the right eye in a man's chart, the left in a woman's. With the karaka in the house of the body, this is the placement most likely to produce a real difference between the two eyes rather than a matching prescription. The head runs hot. Acidity, inflammation that flares under stress, and blood pressure that climbs with rank rather than with age are the recurring complaints.
Where the authority pays
Government service, medicine, administration, anything with a chain of command the native sits near the top of. The placement is wasted in work that requires being one interchangeable contributor among forty. It does its best under a title, even a small one, because the title converts the ego pressure into something structural instead of leaving it to leak into ordinary conversation.
The problem of being the fixed point
A first-house Sun assumes it is the reference frame. That works in a hierarchy and fails in a marriage, and the failure is rarely dramatic. It shows up as a partner who slowly stops raising things. The natives who do well here are the ones who learn, usually late, that being right is a different achievement from being easy to live with.
Combustion: Why the House Alone Tells You Nothing
The popular reading treats the Sun's house as a burn zone, so anything sharing it is written off. That is not what the classical rule says. Combustion is measured in degrees of separation, and every orb is smaller than a sign. Jupiter burns within eleven degrees, Venus within ten, the Moon within twelve, Mercury within fourteen, Saturn within fifteen and Mars within seventeen. A sign is thirty. So a graha can sit in the Sun's own house and stay clear of it, and a graha in the house next door can be burnt through the boundary. The house division and the degree count answer different questions.

- What that means for the first house. With the Sun on the ascendant the lagna lord is most exposed, and for Leo rising that lord is the Sun itself, which cannot burn what it is. That one ascendant escapes the mechanism entirely.
- Dig bala. Surya's directional strength is measured from the fourth house, which is its weakest point, and climbs to full value in the tenth. On the ascendant it stands three houses from the nadir, which is thirty virupas out of sixty. Half strength, in a house everyone reads as maximal.
- The aspect. Surya casts only the seventh, so a first-house Sun looks straight at the 7th house and nothing else. Marriage gets the full glare of an ego graha for a lifetime, which is worth knowing before blaming the seventh lord for everything.
- Rahu joining it. Grahan Yoga on the ascendant, and it lands on the sense of who one is rather than on any outward matter. Reputation moves faster than the person behind it, in both directions.
- Saturn joining it. Shani and Surya are natural enemies and the pairing on the lagna is the classical father-and-authority conflict written into the body. It produces stamina and a permanent sense of being on probation.
Timing: Six Years, and the Birthday That Matters
Surya Mahadasha runs six years, the shortest of the nine, and over a first-house Sun it rebuilds standing rather than circumstances. The Sun Mahadasha guide sets out the whole period, and the Dasha Calculator will say whether it is running now. Inside it, the Saturn antardasha tests this placement hardest, for the same enmity reason.
The Sun matures at twenty-two. Before that year the authority is borrowed and mostly performed; after it, natives report the difference between wanting to be taken seriously and simply being taken seriously.
There is also an annual trigger no other graha provides. The Sun returns to its exact natal degree once a year, within a day of the birthday, and the chart cast for that moment governs the twelve months that follow. Here that return reads the person rather than their affairs.
Remedy for Sun in the 1st House
The named classical text is the Aditya Hridayam from the Yuddha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana, given to Rama before the final fight, and it is prescribed for exactly this situation: strength that has to be steadied rather than increased. Recited at sunrise, facing east, it is the remedy of first resort for an afflicted Surya and it does not require a priest.
Surya's beej mantra, Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah, takes seven thousand repetitions, opened on a Sunday. Agni is the adhidevata of the graha and Shiva the pratyadhidevata, so both lineages of practice are attested. Offering arghya, water poured from a copper vessel toward the rising Sun, is the household observance.
Ruby is Surya's stone, and most people who ask about it here should not be wearing one. Manikya amplifies whatever Surya is already doing, and a Leo or Aries ascendant with the Sun on the lagna does not need amplifying. Confirm the sign and degree with the Birth Chart Calculator before that conversation happens.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sun in 1st house a strong placement?
Strong for standing and weak for flexibility, and only at half its directional value. It gives presence, a natural claim on authority and a body that recovers well, and it charges for those in adaptability, in eye and heat conditions, and in the karaka rule that damages the house it signifies.
What does a first-house Sun do to appearance?
An upright carriage, a prominent forehead, a steady and slightly long gaze, and early greying with the hairline receding rather than thinning. Colouring tends to run warm. The bearing is what people notice, more than any single feature.
Does karako bhavo nashti really ruin the first house?
It weakens the signification, not the person. The Sun stands for the self, so its physical presence in Tanu Bhava overstates the self and strains the body carrying it. Being the only karaka the first house has is what makes the effect so undiluted here.
Does this placement affect the father?
Usually yes, though indirectly. Surya signifies the father wherever it sits, and on the ascendant the native carries the father's manner rather than his circumstances. Whether the relationship is strained is read from the 9th house.
Twelve posts cover the Sun in different houses, and this is the first of them. The 1st house in astrology takes the ascendant with nothing standing in it.

Sun in 9th House: The Father's Karaka in the Father's House
Surya signifies the father and the ninth house is the father's house, which is the exact configuration Parashara warns about. The ninth gets off more lightly than the first because it has a second karaka to share the load.
