Jupiter Transit Effects: The Planet Vedha Blocks Most

August 5, 2026

Jupiter is the transit people wait for and the one most often cancelled. It has the widest vedha exposure of any graha, and its ingress dates are the least trustworthy in the system.

House 1 is your Moon sign itself. A transit in a favourable house still fails if the house shown beneath it is occupied by another graha, which happens on 36.4% of those days.

Where every planet is now, counted from your own Moon

Jupiter transit effects carry more expectation than any other and deliver less reliably than most. Both halves of that are measurable. Jupiter is favourable in five houses of twelve, which is a middling allowance, and vedha cancels 36.4 percent of those, which is the highest blocking rate of the seven planets; only the two shadow nodes are obstructed more. Net, Jupiter is helping 26.5 percent of the time. Venus manages 52.5.

Guru peyarchi, the Jupiter ingress, is treated as an event in a way no other transit except Saturn's is. Temples mark it, forecasts are written for it, and people rearrange plans around it. It is worth knowing what the arithmetic underneath actually supports.

Where Jupiter transit effects land

From your natal Moon: the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th. Wealth, children and creativity, partnership, fortune, gains.

Those five are the ones people would guess, which is unusual in gochar. Most of the favourable lists contain something counterintuitive, like Mercury in the 8th or Venus in the 12th. Jupiter's is exactly the set of houses a reader would nominate if asked where they would like a benefic. There is nothing hidden in it.

The exclusions are also the expected ones. Jupiter in the 3rd, 4th, 8th, 10th and 12th from the Moon is the difficult run, and the 8th is the one most often reported as heavy despite Jupiter's reputation.

Why Jupiter gets cancelled more than anything else

The blocking rate is a structural consequence rather than bad luck, and the mechanism is easy to see once it is laid out. Jupiter's five vedha pairs are:

  • 2nd blocked by the 12th
  • 5th blocked by the 4th
  • 7th blocked by the 3rd
  • 9th blocked by the 10th
  • 11th blocked by the 8th

Count the houses involved. Five favourable plus five blockers, all distinct, is ten of the twelve houses in play at once. No other planet comes close. The Sun has four and four, and its four blockers are all directly opposite its four favourable houses, which as it happens rules out Mercury and Venus as blockers entirely. Jupiter has no such protection and no exemption of any kind.

Look at the pairs more closely and something else appears. Three of the five blockers sit immediately next to the house they block: the 5th blocked by the 4th, the 9th blocked by the 10th, the 7th blocked by the 3rd at four houses away. Adjacency matters, because planets cluster. Mercury and Venus are always near the Sun, so the three of them are frequently in the same or neighbouring signs. A blocking house next door to a favourable one gets occupied far more often than one six signs away.

Jupiter's ingress dates are the least reliable in the system

Across 1900 to 2060, Jupiter entered 31 percent of its signs twice. Saturn is worse at 52 percent, but Saturn changes sign every two and a half years and Jupiter does it annually, so in practice you meet a Jupiter double entry far more often.

The current cycle shows exactly how much that matters. Jupiter first entered Cancer on 18 October 2025. It then retrograded back into Gemini and re-entered Cancer on 1 June 2026. Both dates are legitimate answers to "when did Jupiter enter Cancer" and they are seven and a half months apart.

If a forecast said Jupiter would improve your fortunes from October 2025 and nothing happened, this is a likelier explanation than any of the mystical ones. Jupiter was in and out of the sign for most of the intervening period.

The other number worth keeping straight: Jupiter occupies a sign for 361.65 days, but its boundary crossings average only 219.90 days apart, because re-entries are counted twice. The first figure is the one that describes your year. The second describes the ephemeris.

The twelve-year rhythm

Jupiter's sidereal period is 11.88 years, so it returns to your natal position at roughly 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72. Those returns land close enough to the decade boundaries that most people already have them marked as life stages for unrelated reasons.

The Jupiter return is the counterpart to the Saturn return and gets a fraction of the attention, which is odd given it happens two and a half times as often. The traditional reading treats it as a reset of scope rather than of structure: what you think is possible, rather than what you are obliged to do. The Saturn return covers the other half of the pair, and the two are worth reading together because they alternate through a life rather than coinciding.

One consequence of the twelve-year period that people miss: Jupiter is in the same house from your Moon at 12, 24, 36 and 48. So if a particular Jupiter transit has historically done nothing for you, you already have three or four data points on it, and they are all roughly twelve years apart in your own diary. That is a cheaper test than any of the alternatives.

Jupiter retrograde

Jupiter retrogrades once a year, for about four months. In 2026 it ran to 11 March and again from 13 December, 88 days inside the calendar year, or 24.1 percent of it.

Roughly a third of every Jupiter transit is spent retrograde. That is a significant fraction of the thing people are waiting for, and it is the direct cause of the re-entry problem above. A Jupiter transit is not a smooth arrival; it is an approach, a withdrawal and a second approach.

Jupiter reaches three houses at once

Like Mars, Jupiter has special aspects, and they change the reach of every transit above. Jupiter aspects the 5th, the 7th and the 9th from wherever it stands.

So Jupiter transiting your 3rd, which is not on its favourable list, is casting its aspect on your 7th, 9th and 11th, and all three of those are. A transit that reads as poorly placed is simultaneously touching three of the five houses Jupiter most wants to be in.

This is the main reason Jupiter transits are experienced as more benign than its 26.5 percent net figure suggests. The occupied house is only a quarter of the story. Jupiter is influencing four houses at any moment, and its aspects land on trines, which are the most receptive angles in the system.

It also gives a rule of thumb worth having. If Jupiter is in a house you do not like the look of, count 5, 7 and 9 forward from it. One of those is usually somewhere you would happily have Jupiter, and that is the part of the transit worth attending to.

The gap between reputation and delivery

Put the numbers together and Jupiter is favourably placed 41.7 percent of the time, of which 36.4 percent is cancelled, leaving 26.5 percent. About a quarter of your life has a Jupiter transit doing what Jupiter is supposed to do.

That is not a small amount. It is a great deal less than the way Jupiter transits are discussed would suggest. The practical consequence is that a Jupiter transit into a good house is worth checking rather than celebrating: find out whether the blocking house is occupied before you plan around it. The vedha rule sets out how, and Jupiter in the 9th house covers what the same placement means as a permanent feature of a chart.

The Transit Calculator gives Jupiter's current house from your natal Moon along with everything else in the sky, which is the number every paragraph above depends on.

Frequently asked questions

Which Jupiter transit effects are the best?

The 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th from your natal Moon, with the 11th and 9th the two most commonly singled out. All five are subject to vedha, which cancels 36.4 percent of them, so the blocking house is worth checking in every case.

How long is a Jupiter transit through one sign?

361.65 days of actual occupancy. The often-quoted 13 months and the often-quoted 12 both circulate; 361.65 days is just under 11.9 months, and the confusion comes from mixing occupancy with the gap between boundary crossings.

What is guru peyarchi?

The Tamil term for Jupiter's sign change, marked as an event because Jupiter holds a sign for about a year, so the ingress resets the transit reading for everyone at once. Worth checking whether the date you have is the first crossing or the one that holds.

Why did a good Jupiter transit do nothing?

Most likely vedha, which cancels more Jupiter transits than any other planet's. Second most likely, the transit had not actually settled yet because Jupiter retrograded back out of the sign. Third, the running dasha had no connection to the house involved.
