Budha and Surya can never be in opposition, which means that in the whole history of chart-casting no Sun has ever aspected a Mercury. A seventh-house placement is where that impossibility stops being a curiosity and starts mattering.

Labha Bhava is the strongest upachaya in the chart and it rewards accumulation of every kind. Mercury accumulates contacts, and this placement is the mechanism by which a list of acquaintances quietly turns into an income.

The third house governs writing, short journeys, siblings and the hands, which is very nearly a list of Mercury's own significations. That resemblance is real, and it is also the reason this placement gets over-read.

Virgo is Mercury's own sign and its exaltation sign at once, and for an Aries ascendant Virgo falls in the sixth. That single coincidence produces the strongest version of a placement everybody writes off.

Budha and Guru divide the four dual signs between them, and each of Mercury's two sits directly opposite one of Jupiter's. In the ninth house that opposition stops being a diagram and becomes the native's actual relationship with belief.

Budha indicates trade and profession, so its presence in the house of profession should wreck the signification. It barely dents it, and the reason is a head count that most readings of the karaka rule never get around to doing.

Budha is the one graha with no settled character of its own. It reads as benefic alone and turns malefic in bad company, which makes the question of who else stands on the ascendant more urgent here than in any other placement.

Dhana Bhava governs speech and accumulated wealth in the same breath, which is an odd pairing until Budha lands there and joins them. Then the voice stops being a manner and becomes an instrument that money arrives through.

Budha is the bhava karaka of formal education, and the fourth house is where formal education is read. Putting the indicator inside the thing it indicates triggers a rule that most readings of this placement leave out entirely.

The fifth house is a trikona, and a graha ruling a trikona alongside an angle is what makes a yogakaraka. Mercury never manages it, for any ascendant, and the reason is a piece of arithmetic rather than a matter of interpretation.

Randhra Bhava is the house of what is deliberately not on the surface. Give it the graha of investigation and you get a native who cannot leave a closed question alone, which is a gift in research and a burden everywhere else.

Vyaya Bhava is where things leave the chart: money, sleep, the self, the country of birth. A graha of communication placed in the house of what is not spoken produces one of the stranger and more productive placements in Jyotish.
