Guna Milan compares the Moon sign (Rashi) and birth star (Nakshatra) of both partners across eight factors called the Ashta Koota, awarding a maximum of 36 points. The eight Kootas and their weights are Varna (1 point, spiritual and ego compatibility), Vashya (2 points, mutual attraction and control), Tara (3 points, health and destiny), Yoni (4 points, physical and sexual compatibility), Graha Maitri (5 points, mental and psychological bonding), Gana (6 points, temperament), Bhakoot (7 points, love, finances, and family welfare), and Nadi (8 points, health and progeny).

The points from all eight Kootas are added to produce a total out of 36. Because Nadi (8) and Bhakoot (7) carry the most weight, an affliction in either can outweigh a high overall score, which is why astrologers read the individual Koota breakdown rather than the total alone.

A minimum of 18 out of 36 Gunas is the traditional threshold for an acceptable match. The bands are: below 18 Gunas is not recommended, 18 to 24 is average and workable, 25 to 32 is a very good match, and 33 to 36 is an excellent, rare match. A very high total is desirable but the quality of the individual Kootas, especially Nadi and Bhakoot, still matters more than the number.

Mangal Dosha, also called Manglik Dosha or Kuja Dosha, arises when Mars occupies the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from the ascendant, Moon, or Venus. It is believed to introduce friction, delays, or conflict into married life. Mangal Dosha is assessed separately from the 36-Guna Guna Milan score.

The dosha is considered balanced when both partners are Manglik, or when it is cancelled by specific planetary placements (for example Mars in its own or exalted sign). Where an imbalance remains, classical remedies such as Kumbh Vivah or Mangal-related mantras and charity are prescribed. Always confirm the dosha and its cancellation with an astrologer rather than relying on the flag alone.
