Electional Astrology, Screen by Screen > Muhurat is the one branch of Vedic astrology that looks forward rather than back. Here is what it screens for, and how much of a year actually gets through. # What Is Muhurat? Electional Astrology, Screen by Screen What is muhurat, put plainly: it is the branch of Vedic astrology that picks a moment to start something. Every other branch reads a chart that already exists. A birth chart is fixed the instant someone is born, and a transit reading tells you what is arriving whether you asked for it or not. Muhurat is the only part of the subject where you get to choose the input, which is why it is the only part that can be judged on whether the choice was actually available. The word also names a unit of time. A muhurta is a thirtieth of the span from one sunrise to the next, which works out near 48 minutes but is never exactly that, because daylight and darkness are not equal and each is divided into fifteen separately. At Delhi a daytime muhurta runs anywhere from about 41 to 56 minutes across the year. That double meaning is not an accident. The thing being chosen and the unit it is chosen in are the same word. ## What is muhurat actually screening for? Five quantities describe a day: tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana. Those are the five limbs of the [panchang](https://mahadasha.com/what-is-panchang) , and four of the five are simple arithmetic on two numbers, the sidereal longitudes of the Sun and the Moon. A muhurat rule is a filter over those five, plus a condition on the rising sign at the chosen minute. The filters are not applied evenly. Some are hard rejections and some only raise or lower a score. A working rule for any activity has four parts: - A set of acceptable [nakshatras](https://mahadasha.com/nakshatra-in-panchang) , which carries most of the selectivity. - A set of acceptable weekdays, which carries most of the rest. - A set of rejected [tithis](https://mahadasha.com/tithi-in-panchang) , usually the fourth, ninth and fourteenth of each fortnight plus the new and full Moon. - A modality for the ascendant at the moment itself. Two further windows sit on top of all of it and are treated as disqualifying rather than scored: Panchak, and the Vishti karana known as Bhadra. Both are covered in [their own guide](https://mahadasha.com/panchak-and-bhadra-in-muhurat) , and both turn out to be considerably smaller than their reputations. ## The nakshatra list is not a list Every popular article on this subject reproduces a list of stars for each activity, and the lists look arbitrary. They are not. Muhurta texts sort all twenty-seven nakshatras into seven classes by temperament, and an activity does not choose stars one at a time. It chooses classes, and the star list falls out of them. The seven are Dhruva or fixed, Chara or movable, Ugra or fierce, Mishra or mixed, Kshipra or swift, Mridu or soft, and Tikshna or sharp. They hold four, five, five, two, three, four and four members respectively. That comes to twenty-seven, and no star sits in two classes at once. It is a clean partition of the whole set, which is what makes the classes worth learning instead of the twelve separate lists they generate. Seen that way the rules stop looking superstitious and start looking almost mechanical. Moving into a house wants the fixed class, because you would like the house to stay standing. Buying a vehicle wants the movable and the swift. Surgery wants the sharp and the fierce, which every other activity is at pains to avoid, and the reason is not mysterious: a surgeon is doing something deliberately violent and would like the day to cooperate with that rather than resist it. Two of the seven are worth noticing for what they do not do. Mishra holds only Krittika and Vishakha, and across the twelve activities in this cluster not one of them asks for it. Ugra and Tikshna are wanted by exactly one activity between them, and it is the one you would guess. ## How much of a year survives This is where muhurat stops being decorative. Take marriage. Its classes give ten acceptable stars out of twenty-seven, and its weekday rule gives four days out of seven. If those were independent and nothing else applied you would expect about twenty-one percent of a year to qualify, or roughly 77 days. Run the actual screens against 2026 at Delhi, reading the limbs at sunrise, and the answer is 48 days. The tithi rule takes the difference. Require the day also be clear of Panchak and Bhadra and it falls to 35. That is under ten percent of a year, and it is why muhurat lists feel so restrictive on first contact. Every activity has its own number and no two match. The widest is the naming ceremony at 78 days, drawing on four of the seven classes. The narrowest is first wearing a rudraksha at 30, and that is almost entirely because it keeps only two weekdays where most activities keep three or four. Buying property gets 32, starting a business 50, travel 67. ## The half of muhurat nobody applies Everything above is about the day. None of it knows who you are. Two further screens do, and they are the ones most people skip. Tara bala counts the day's nakshatra from your birth nakshatra and takes the remainder against nine. The nine positions carry names, and three are rejected: the third, fifth and seventh, called Vipat, Pratyari and Vadha. Three of nine is a third of every calendar gone, and which third depends on where the Moon sat when you were born. Chandra bala counts the day's Moon sign from your birth Moon sign. The fourth, eighth and twelfth are weak. Three of twelve is a quarter of every calendar. Apply both and the arithmetic is worth stating. Two thirds of one, times three quarters of the other, leaves exactly half. Measured across 2026 for all 324 combinations of birth star and birth Moon sign, the mean share of days passing both is 50.0 percent, ranging from 40.8 to 56.7 depending on the person. Before a single panchang rule is consulted, half the year has gone, and a different half for everybody. That is the honest answer to why two people are handed different dates for the same kind of event. Neither astrologer is wrong. Their clients' birth stars sit in different places, so their calendars do too. ## When two people need the same date A wedding needs both partners to pass. If the two screens were independent, half of a half is a quarter, and that is roughly what happens. Taking the 35 marriage dates in 2026 that clear every day-level screen, and testing them against thousands of sampled combinations of two birth charts, the median number of dates a specific couple can use is nine. About one couple in eight has none at all in the entire year. Nine dates, spread unevenly across twelve months, is the real reason a wedding date gets fixed a year out and why families compromise on the venue before they compromise on the day. ## What it does not claim A muhurat improves the conditions at the start. It does not overwrite the chart of the person doing the starting, and no classical source says otherwise. If someone's [natal Moon](https://mahadasha.com/moon-in-different-houses) is under sustained pressure in a dasha that runs for years, choosing a good Thursday does not suspend that. The old formulation is that muhurat is the last of the supports, applied after the chart and the dasha have been read, not instead of them. It also cannot be perfect. Once a star list, a weekday list, a tithi list, an ascendant modality, tara bala and chandra bala have all been imposed on a fixed deadline, there is frequently nothing left. Practitioners then rank rather than reject, which is why real muhurat output is a scored list of candidates and never a single answer presented as the only one. ## Reading a day yourself The workflow is short enough to do by hand. Pull the five limbs for the date. Check the nakshatra against the activity's classes, check the weekday, check the tithi is not one of the rejected ones. Confirm the day is not inside Panchak and that Bhadra is not running at the hour you want. A panchang describes a day. A muhurat is a judgement about whether that day, and a particular hour inside it, suits a particular purpose. The panchang is the raw material and the muhurat is what gets built from it. ### How long is a muhurta? A thirtieth of the sunrise-to-sunrise cycle, fifteen across the day and fifteen across the night. Near 48 minutes on average, but a daytime muhurta at Delhi runs from about 41 to 56 minutes across the year, since daylight is not constant. ### Can a date be chosen without birth details? The panchang half of it, yes. Tara bala and chandra bala both need a birth nakshatra and a birth Moon sign, and between them they account for about half the rejections, so a date picked without them has done roughly half the work. ### What if nothing qualifies before the deadline?
