Two of the three are swapped and the difference is four signs, which is enough to move a planet from a friend's house to an enemy's. # Vimsamsha Chart (D20): Devotion, Worship and Spiritual Practice The Vimsamsha chart (D20) is read for upasana, meaning the practice a person actually keeps rather than the beliefs they hold. Prayer, ritual, meditation, the chosen deity, and the question of whether spiritual effort produces anything or circles. It is the chart that answers what your practice is like when nobody is watching. Before the interpretation, a technical point that decides whether the chart on your screen is the right one. ## Why the Vimsamsha chart (D20) trips up software Each sign divides into twenty parts of 1 degree 30 minutes. The count begins from Aries for a movable sign, from Sagittarius for a fixed sign, and from Leo for a dual sign. Now compare the D16, which begins from Aries, Leo and Sagittarius in that order for movable, fixed and dual. The same three signs appear. Two of them are swapped. Leo and Sagittarius are four signs apart, so a program that carries the D16 order into the D20 puts every planet in a fixed or dual sign four signs from where it belongs. Four signs is a trine, which means the result lands in a sign of the same element and looks entirely reasonable. It can move a planet from its own sign to a neutral one, or from exaltation to nothing in particular, without producing a single position that would strike a reader as impossible. A worked example. A planet at 8 degrees Cancer sits in the sixth part, since 8 divided by 1.5 gives 5 with a remainder. Cancer is movable, so the count begins at Aries, and six on from Aries is Virgo. Two websites giving you two different D20 charts is common, and this is usually why. It is worth checking which one starts fixed signs at Sagittarius before trusting either. ## What the Vimsamsha chart (D20) shows The form your practice takes. Devotional, contemplative, ritual, study based, service based. The chart describes a mode rather than a religion, and it does not care which tradition supplies the vocabulary. Whether the practice sustains. This is the useful part. Plenty of charts show genuine spiritual interest and no capacity to keep a routine, and the D20 distinguishes them. A well supported D20 lagna lord is the signature of somebody whose practice survives contact with ordinary life. The ishta devata question, meaning the deity or form a person is naturally drawn to. Jaimini practice derives this from the Atmakaraka's position in the D9 rather than from this chart, so treat any D20 based claim about a specific deity as one method among several rather than as an answer. Progress and obstruction. Where practice tends to stall, and what kind of discipline it responds to. Saturn in the D20 is worth attention here, because it usually describes the form of discipline that works for a given chart rather than an obstacle to be removed. A Saturn heavy D20 tends to belong to somebody for whom a fixed hour and a plain routine work better than intensity, and who gives up on anything that depends on enthusiasm to keep going. ## How to read it beside the birth chart Start with the ninth house of the D1, which is dharma, faith and the teacher, and the twelfth, which is withdrawal, retreat and what the tradition calls moksha. Those two houses make the promise this chart refines. Then check Jupiter and Ketu, the two natural significators for spiritual life, one for wisdom acquired through learning and one for detachment that arrives without being sought. Take the ninth lord across into the D20 and read its dignity. Then look at where Ketu sits in the varga, since a well placed Ketu here often marks practice that was already underway before this life, in the traditional reading, and in a plainer reading marks somebody for whom it comes naturally. A strong D20 says nothing about whether somebody is decent, and treating it as a moral score is the fastest way to misuse it. Character is closer to the D45, and even there the reading is descriptive rather than a verdict. Not religiosity. Somebody with no tradition at all can have a well organised D20, and the chart will describe their discipline in whatever form it takes: a training routine, a research habit, a daily practice with no name attached. The vocabulary the classical texts used was devotional because that was the available language for sustained inner work. Not outcome. This chart has no timing in it. Whether a practice deepens in a particular decade is a dasha question, and a D20 read without the period sequence describes a capacity rather than a phase of life. ## Where the D20 sits in the classical scheme The Vimsamsha is in the Shodashavarga, the sixteen chart group, and in none of the smaller ones. It is absent from the Shadvarga, Saptavarga and Dashavarga, so it plays no part in the older strength calculations. Its Vimshopaka weight is half a point out of twenty. The 1 degree 30 minute division takes the ascendant about six minutes to cross, which puts the D20 lagna beyond the reach of a birth time that was rounded to a quarter hour. Read the planetary placements confidently and the ascendant carefully, and if the recorded time came from memory rather than a certificate, say so before drawing conclusions about somebody's spiritual life. ## Frequently asked questions ### What does the Vimsamsha chart (D20) show?
