Its muhurat contains the single clearest piece of reasoning in this whole cluster, and it lives in the ascendant condition rather than in the star list. Learning is not a fixed thing. It is also not a movable one in the sense that travel is, where the point is to arrive somewhere else. It is a thing that keeps becoming, which is exactly what the dual signs describe. Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces are called dvisvabhava, two-natured, and this rule asks for one of them at the moment the first letter is written. ## Vidyarambha muhurat and its eleven stars The classes are Kshipra the swift, Mridu the soft and Dhruva the fixed. That gives eleven stars: Ashwini, Pushya and Hasta; Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha and Revati; and Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha and Uttara Bhadrapada. Swift because comprehension should come quickly. Soft because a child should not be frightened of the process. Fixed because what is learned should stay learned, and that third class is the one distinguishing this rule from a naming or a haircut, both of which refuse it or treat it as optional. Hasta is the star most often named outright. Its symbol is the hand, its lord is the Moon and its deity is Savitr, and a ceremony whose central act is a child holding a stylus for the first time could hardly ask for a better fit. ## What 2026 left Those eleven stars fall on 147 days of 2026 at Delhi. Restricting to the three Mercury, Jupiter and Venus weekdays leaves 65 of them, and the tithi screen takes it to 42. Six of those fall inside Panchak and six have Bhadra running at sunrise, which leaves 30 clear of both. That places vidyarambha in the narrower half of the twelve activities here, a little ahead of buying property and a little behind starting a business. ## Mercury, Jupiter and Venus Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and here the choice among them carries more weight than usual because the three planets divide the subject matter. Mercury governs the mechanics of learning: letters, arithmetic, memory, articulation. Jupiter governs its content and its authority, which is why a guru is a Jupiter figure and why Thursday suits the beginning of a scriptural or philosophical study. Venus governs the arts, so a first music or dance lesson is placed on a Friday by preference. Monday is absent, and its absence is deliberate in a way that repays a moment. The Moon signifies the mind, which sounds ideal for study, but it signifies the mind's changeability rather than its capacity. Education wants the mind held still long enough for something to stick. ## The day that overrides the screen Vasant Panchami, the fifth tithi of the bright fortnight of Magha, is treated across most of India as needing no further screening for vidyarambha. It is Saraswati's day, and a child started on it is held to be started well regardless of what the weekday and the star happen to be. This is worth being honest about. It is a convention resting on the tithi and the deity, and it can and does land on a weekday this rule would otherwise reject, or on a star from a class this rule refuses. A strict reading treats Vasant Panchami as a strong preference that still has to clear the other screens. Common practice does not, and there is no way to reconcile the two beyond saying which one you are following. Aksharabhyasam, as practised in the south, is specifically the tracing of the first letters, usually in a tray of rice, with an adult guiding the child's hand. Vidyarambha as used in the north is broader and can cover the start of schooling generally. The screens are the same. What differs is the moment being timed. For aksharabhyasam it is the instant the child's finger first moves, which is precise, and the ascendant condition is genuinely enforceable against it. For a broader vidyarambha the moment is a matter of interpretation, and most practitioners settle on the first formal instruction of the day rather than on a child arriving at a building. Where a school sets the term date, which it invariably does, the reading that keeps the astrology meaningful is to hold the ceremony at home on a qualifying day and let the term begin whenever it begins. Hunting for a good muhurat inside an institution's calendar is a losing exercise, and nothing is gained by pretending the institution consulted one. ## The house that is being read The fifth house from the rising sign governs learning, intelligence and children all at once, and a vidyarambha muhurat wants it clean: occupied or aspected by a benefic rather than a malefic, and ideally with its lord well placed. Mercury and Jupiter in particular should not be combust at the chosen moment, which is a condition the panchang cannot report and a chart can. Combustion is proximity to the Sun, and Mercury is combust for a substantial share of any year by the nature of its orbit, so this condition removes more candidate days than people expect. What goes is the empty three in each fortnight, the eighth of each, and Amavasya, which is a lighter screen than either marriage or naming applies. Panchami, the fifth tithi, is actively sought rather than merely permitted, and that is not a coincidence with Vasant Panchami falling on it. The fifth tithi and the fifth house are both associated with intelligence and with Saraswati, so the tradition is being consistent rather than repeating itself. Dashami and Ekadashi are the next most favoured. Worth watching for: a Panchami tithi falling on a Wednesday under one of the eleven stars is genuinely rare, since a given tithi recurs about twice a lunar month and has to coincide with three weekdays of seven and eleven stars of twenty-seven.
