It still only delivers half the time, and the reason exposes something about what the word favourable is doing in these lists. Venus transit effects are the most generously treated in classical gochar and it is not close. Counted from your natal Moon, Venus gives its result in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th, 11th and 12th. Nine houses of twelve. Only the 6th, 7th and 10th are excluded. Set that against Saturn and Mars, which get three houses each, and you have the tradition's opinion in numbers rather than adjectives. A benefic is not a planet that produces nice outcomes. It is a planet that produces its outcome in three quarters of the places it can stand. ## The three houses Venus is not welcome in The exclusions are more informative than the inclusions, because they are so few. The 6th, the 7th and the 10th. Two of those look wrong at first glance. Venus is the significator of marriage, so why is it unwelcome in the 7th, the house of the partner? And Venus governs comfort and status, so why not the 10th? The classical answer is a principle called karako bhavo nashto: a planet sitting in the house it signifies tends to damage that house rather than help it. The reasoning offered is that a significator in its own house has nothing left to signify from a distance, and the matter loses its perspective. Whether you find that persuasive or not, it is a consistent rule rather than an exception carved out for Venus, and the same logic excludes Jupiter from the house of children. The 6th is easier. It is the house of service, illness and conflict, and there is nothing there for a planet of comfort to work with. ## What Venus transit effects reveal about the word favourable Nine houses out of twelve is 75 percent of the time. Vedha then cancels 30.0 percent of that, which leaves Venus helping 52.5 percent of the time. Sit with that for a moment. The most-favoured planet in the system, with the most generous house list anyone gets, is doing something useful for you slightly more than half your life. That is the ceiling. Everything else is lower, and Saturn and Mars are at 17 percent. Which tells you what favourable was ever meant to mean. Not that things go well. That the planet is permitted to act. The rest of the time it is either in a house that will not carry it or it is being cancelled, and the sum of those two is most of any life. ## The eight-year pattern Venus has a cycle almost nothing else in the sky offers, and it is checkable against your own calendar. Eight Earth years is very nearly thirteen Venus years, so Venus returns to almost the same position on almost the same date every eight years. The mismatch is small but real, about two days per eight-year cycle, so the pattern drifts slowly rather than repeating forever. Over a lifetime you get nine or ten repetitions before the dates have moved a month. This is the one transit cycle you can test without a calculator. Take a date that mattered to you and look at the same week eight years earlier and eight years later. Venus was in nearly the same degree on all three. Whether anything correlates is up to your own records, but the astronomy is not in dispute and the test costs nothing. It is also why Venus figures so heavily in the older calendrical traditions. A body that returns to the same place on the same date within a couple of days, across a period a person can remember, is the kind of thing pre-telescopic astronomy could pin down precisely. For every other graha, the favourable houses and the blocking houses are two disjoint sets. Saturn is favourable in the 3rd, 6th and 11th and blocked from the 12th, 9th and 5th, and no house appears in both lists. Venus's lists overlap in six places. The 1st, 3rd, 5th, 8th, 9th and 11th are all simultaneously houses where Venus does well and houses whose occupation blocks a different Venus placement. Venus in the 1st is favourable, and Venus in the 1st also blocks a Venus transit in the 3rd. Different manuscripts give slightly different Venus rows, which is the honest reason for the mess. This is a place where the tradition is not internally consistent, and the useful response is to lean on Venus's house placement and treat its vedha row as the least reliable of the nine. ## Venus retrograde is rare and long Venus retrogrades about every 19 months, less often than any planet except Mars, and when it does it runs for about six weeks. In 2026 there was one span, 3 October to 14 November, 41.8 days, which is 11.4 percent of the year. Venus's retrograde has a consequence its speed makes visible. In 2026 it entered Libra on 2 September, retrograded back into Virgo on 5 November, and re-entered Libra on 22 November. Anyone tracking Venus's arrival in Libra had two dates eleven weeks apart to choose between. The traditional reading of a retrograde Venus is worth more than the Mercury version because it is rarer and slower. It is generally taken as a period for revisiting rather than starting: existing relationships and existing agreements rather than new ones. ## Venus and the Sun Like Mercury, Venus is tethered to the Sun and cannot exceed about 48 degrees of separation. That is a wider leash than Mercury's 28, so Venus spends less of its time combust, but the same principle applies: an inner planet buys its proximity to the Sun at the cost of periodic invisibility. Venus emerging from combustion as the morning or evening star is treated as a significant moment in several traditions, and it is one of the few transit events you can verify with your own eyes. If you can see Venus in the sky, it is not combust. That check is worth more than it sounds. Almost everything else in this cluster requires you to take an ephemeris on trust. Venus is bright enough to be the third-brightest object in the sky after the Sun and Moon, so its rising before dawn or setting after dusk is something you can confirm from a window. If a reading tells you Venus is strong and you cannot find it in the sky for several weeks running, the reading and the sky disagree, and the sky wins. ## What to do with a Venus transit Given nine favourable houses, the more useful question is not whether Venus is well placed but whether it is in one of the three where it is not, and whether anything is blocking it where it is. Venus through your 6th, 7th or 10th from the Moon is the window where the things Venus governs, meaning agreements, comfort and pleasure, are the ones under strain.
