Venus runs the most predictable loop in the sky. Venus retrograde is the reversal you are least likely to have. Across the twentieth century Shukra turned back 63 times in 100 years, which works out at 0.63 spells a year, one every 579.8 days. That is a gap of just over nineteen months, and it means most calendar years contain no Venus reversal at all. At birth it shows up in 7.01% to 7.53% of charts depending on the sampling window, the lowest figure of the five planets that can reverse. If you have one, you are in a minority of about one reader in fourteen. What makes it worth a page of its own is not the rarity. It is how regular the thing is once it starts. ## Venus retrograde runs the steadiest loop in the sky Measured across all 63 spells, the shortest lasted 41.0 days and the longest 43.2. That is a spread of 2.2 days across a century. The arc walked back ranged from 15.30 degrees to 16.53, a spread of just over one degree. Compare that to Mars, whose spells run anywhere from 60 to 81 days, or Mercury, whose arc varies by almost a factor of two. Venus does the same thing, the same distance, at the same pace, every time. The reason is the shape of the orbit. Venus travels on the most nearly circular path of any classical planet, so its distance from the Sun barely changes and its speed barely changes with it. Mercury's orbit swings wide and its loops inherit the variation. Venus has almost nothing to vary. There is a practical consequence. If someone quotes you a fixed duration for a Venus reversal, they are close to right, which is unusual in this subject. Six weeks is a fair answer. ## The 47 degree leash Venus never gets far from the Sun. Its widest separation across 200 years was 47.27 degrees, which is why it is only ever visible as a morning or evening object and never overhead at midnight. While reversed it is closer still. Across every retrograde day we measured, Venus sat between 0.00 and 29.08 degrees from the Sun and never once further. The reversal happens when Venus swings between us and the Sun, so being near the Sun is not a coincidence attached to the reversal. It is the reversal. On 23.80% of its reversed days, Venus was inside the combustion orb as well. That is roughly one reversed day in four, and in birth charts the same condition appears in 1.68% to 1.89% of the population. Around one chart in fifty five carries a Venus that is both reversed and burnt. The two conditions pull in opposite directions, which is why they need reading in order. When Venus is retrograde, the same tables narrow it to 8. The reasoning is physical and it holds up. A retrograde Venus is at inferior conjunction, which is the closest it ever comes to Earth. Its disc is at its largest and its apparent brightness at that stage of the cycle is unusually high, so it survives the Sun's glare closer in than a distant Venus on the far side of its orbit would. Narrowing the orb costs less than you would think. Across 73,049 days, the flat 10 degree rule called Venus combust on 15.44% of them and the retrograde aware rule on 14.99%, a difference of 327 days in two centuries. Small, but it lands on exactly the charts where the reading is most contested, so it is worth getting right. Only Mercury and Venus have a retrograde orb at all in these tables. Nobody bothered defining one for the outer three, and the reason is not oversight. Venus turns retrograde on 3 October and turns direct on 14 November, in Lahiri sidereal terms. Six weeks, and then nothing until well into 2028. It is the graha of appetite and of taste, which are not the same and are easy to confuse. Reversed, the classical reading is that the valuing turns inward and gets rebuilt. The person does not inherit their taste. They arrive at it, often after discarding whatever they were handed, and often later than their peers. The same pattern shows up in how they approach partnership: less willingness to accept the received template, more insistence on working out what they actually want from it. In Shadbala terms a reversed graha earns close to maximum cheshta bala, motional strength, so this is not a diminished Venus. It is a Venus that takes the long route to its own conclusions. The house sets the department. The reversal is an adjective, not a noun. ## Malavya Yoga does not care which way Venus is facing Malavya Yoga forms when Venus sits in its own sign or exaltation in an angular house. It is one of the five Panchamahapurusha yogas, and it is defined entirely by sign and house. Nothing in the definition mentions direction of travel. A reversed Venus in Taurus in the 1st house forms the yoga exactly as a direct one does, and given that Venus is reversed about 7% of the time, roughly one Malavya chart in fourteen carries a reversed Venus. The reversed version tends to produce someone whose sense of quality is genuinely their own rather than borrowed, which is a reasonable description of what the yoga is supposed to deliver in the first place. ## Where the popular advice overreaches The standard warning is to avoid weddings, engagements, jewellery purchases and cosmetic procedures while Venus is reversed. Look at what that asks. Venus is retrograde on 7.21% of days, and the advice applies to everyone alive at the same time, which means it wants a fourteenth of all such decisions moved for a reason that has nothing to do with any individual chart. The muhurat tradition does not select moments that way. It works from the tithi, the nakshatra, the weekday, the rising sign and the specific act being undertaken, for a specific pair of people. Venus matters enormously in a marriage muhurat, but what matters is where Venus is and what it rules for those charts, not which direction it happens to be facing that month. Yes, and it is the normal case for about a quarter of its reversed days. The two happen together because both describe the same passage between Earth and the Sun.
