# Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra: All Four Padas, Lord and Meaning

> Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra is the serpent of the deep, ruled by Saturn in Pisces. Its four padas, Mercury's debilitation inside it, and the calm it is known for.

# Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra: All Four Padas, Lord and Meaning

Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra occupies 3°20' to 16°40' Pisces and is ruled by Saturn. Its deity is Ahirbudhnya, the serpent of the deep, and its symbol is the back legs of a funeral cot. In the sky it is Algenib and Alpheratz, the remaining two corners of the Great Square of Pegasus.

Where [Purva Bhadrapada](https://mahadasha.com/purva-bhadrapada-nakshatra) burns, this one holds still. It is among the most peaceful nakshatras in the twenty-seven, and the peace was expensive.

## The serpent at the bottom of the ocean

Ahirbudhnya is the serpent of the depths, coiled at the foundation of things. He is a form of Shiva in later tradition, and what he represents is the stillness underneath the movement: the part of the ocean that does not know there is weather on the surface.

That image does most of the work. Uttara Bhadrapada natives are calm in a way that other people find slightly uncanny, and the effect is strongest exactly when a situation is at its worst and everybody else in the room has started moving faster and talking louder. They are patient. They are deeply private. They are unusually wise about things they have not obviously experienced.

The calm is not detachment. It is depth. A great deal is going on and none of it shows on the surface, which is precisely the arrangement the deity describes.

All four padas sit in Pisces, so Jupiter is the rashi lord while Saturn rules the star. Jupiter's compassion and Saturn's endurance together, in the last full sign of the zodiac, produce the exact combination this nakshatra is known for and that very few charts manage anywhere else: kindness that has already been tested, more than once, and did not break either time.

## Why the funeral cot again

The Bhadrapada pair share a symbol split between them, and the second half is worth reading on its own terms. A cot needs both ends. The front legs take the weight at the moment of lifting; the back legs carry it the rest of the way.

Purva Bhadrapada is the intensity of an ending. Uttara Bhadrapada is the long quiet afterwards, when the crisis has passed and the visitors have gone home and somebody still has to make the tea and sit there and keep going for the next several years. That is why this star has a reputation for supporting other people.

It shows up after everyone else has left.

There is one marker inside the arc worth noting. Mercury reaches its deep debilitation degree at 15°00' Pisces, which falls in this nakshatra's fourth pada. The most analytical graha is at its weakest in a star whose knowledge is not analytical at all. That is less a warning than a description: what Uttara Bhadrapada knows, it does not know by reasoning.

## All four Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra padas in detail

The padas run Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio.

### Pada 1: 3°20' to 6°40' Pisces, Leo navamsa

The Sun takes the navamsa. Syllable *Du*.

The most visible quarter of an invisible star. Fire navamsa gives it warmth and a public face: teaching, medicine, religious leadership, and roles where compassion has to be exercised in front of people. It is the most confident pada of the four and the least comfortable being anonymous.

### Pada 2: 6°40' to 10°00' Pisces, Virgo navamsa

Mercury takes the navamsa. Syllable *Tha*.

The practical quarter. Nursing, administration, dietetics, accounting, and the detailed service work that keeps institutions running. Virgo across from Pisces gives this pada an unusual ability to be useful without being sentimental, and it worries more than the rest of the star.

### Pada 3: 10°00' to 13°20' Pisces, Libra navamsa

Venus takes the navamsa. Syllable *Jha*.

The gentlest and most relational quarter. Counselling, the arts, hospitality, mediation, and marriage taken seriously as a lifelong project. This pada is genuinely pleasant company and it is the one most likely to be taken advantage of, because saying no is not in its repertoire.

### Pada 4: 13°20' to 16°40' Pisces, Scorpio navamsa

Mars takes the navamsa, and Mercury reaches its debilitation degree at 15°00' Pisces inside this pada. Syllable *Na*.

The deepest quarter, and where Ahirbudhnya properly lives. Mysticism, psychology, occult study, hospice and research into what is hidden. Water on water with Mars underneath gives it real force beneath the stillness. The Mercury debilitation means this pada does not explain itself well, which is not the same as not knowing.

## Nineteen years of Saturn

A Moon in Uttara Bhadrapada opens life in [Saturn Mahadasha](https://mahadasha.com/saturn-mahadasha) , nineteen years. [Pushya](https://mahadasha.com/pushya-nakshatra) and [Anuradha](https://mahadasha.com/anuradha-nakshatra) are the other Saturn stars.

Nineteen years of Shani covering childhood and adolescence is where this star's calm comes from. Responsibility early, resources short, and a childhood that required more patience than childhoods are supposed to. What it produces is somebody genuinely unshakeable at thirty because very little is new.

Seventeen years of Mercury follow, which for this nakshatra is usually when the accumulated understanding finally finds words. Get the balance from the [dasha calculator](https://mahadasha.com/dasha-calculator) .

## The syllables Uttara Bhadrapada gives a child

The four are *Du*, *Tha*, *Jha* and *Na*, and together with [Hasta](https://mahadasha.com/hasta-nakshatra) 's set this is one of the two most scattered assignments in the zodiac. Four padas, four unrelated consonants.

Only the first continues anything, picking up the *D* from [Purva Bhadrapada](https://mahadasha.com/purva-bhadrapada-nakshatra) . After that the set gives no help whatsoever. *Jha* in particular has very few names attached to it in common use across any Indian language, and families often use the prescribed syllable for the formal naming and a separate everyday name. That is normal practice rather than a compromise.

## When Uttara Bhadrapada is active in a chart

Every 27.3 days the Moon comes back to Uttara Bhadrapada for roughly twenty-five hours.

Saturn, the star lord, takes roughly thirteen months to cross the arc and returns about every twenty-nine and a half years. Those passages are slow and heavy and they are also when this nakshatra does its real work, because it is the one star that does not mind Saturn's pace.

The Sun crosses in about thirteen days in late March. Jupiter, ruling the rashi, takes five months every twelve years and is the transit that brings recognition to someone who was never asking for it.

## Work that suits Uttara Bhadrapada

Anything requiring patience with people. Counselling and psychotherapy, medicine and nursing, hospice and palliative care, social work, teaching, and religious or contemplative life.

Saturn adds the long institutional career and the unglamorous infrastructure roles, while Pisces contributes the arts, water-related work, charities and anything involving the marginalised. Astrology and the occult sit comfortably here too. Uttara Bhadrapada is Dhruva, a fixed nakshatra, which makes it one of the best in the calendar for marriage, foundations and anything intended to be permanent.

## Marriage, gana and compatibility

Uttara Bhadrapada is Manushya gana, Go yoni, Madhya nadi. The cow yoni is shared with [Uttara Phalguni](https://mahadasha.com/uttara-phalguni-nakshatra) , and its natural enemy is the tiger, which puts [Chitra](https://mahadasha.com/chitra-nakshatra) and [Vishakha](https://mahadasha.com/vishakha-nakshatra) at a disadvantage.

### Which nakshatras actually match Uttara Bhadrapada

Manushya gana, a cow yoni, Madhya nadi. Those three and the Tara count are worth 21 of the 36 points, and not one of them needs a clock.

The best partner on those 21 is [Uttara Phalguni](https://mahadasha.com/uttara-phalguni-nakshatra) at 19, which is the same-yoni pairing, cow with cow, for the full four points. Both are Manushya gana for the full six, and Uttara Phalguni's Adi nadi against Madhya keeps all eight nadi points.

The weakest are [Chitra](https://mahadasha.com/chitra-nakshatra) and [Dhanishta](https://mahadasha.com/dhanishta-nakshatra) , both at 1 of 21. In each case Manushya against Rakshasa costs all six gana points and the cow's natural enemies are involved. Uttara A Saturn star settles 21 points and no more. The other 15 come from [Kundali matching](https://mahadasha.com/kundali-matching) .

## Reading Uttara Bhadrapada for planets other than the Moon

Saturn in its own nakshatra is at its most humane, which is not something that can be said of it in many places. Jupiter in Pisces is in its own sign and is one of the most benevolent placements available anywhere.

Mercury in the fourth pada is at its exact debilitation degree and is genuinely weak, though it often coincides with intuitive rather than analytical intelligence. The Moon here is calm and deep. Venus in the third pada is gentle and self-sacrificing. Mars in the fourth has hidden force. Ketu in Uttara Bhadrapada is a strong marker for authentic spiritual practice rather than the performative kind.

## The difficult side of Uttara Bhadrapada

Passivity. The calm is real. It is also, sometimes, a way of not acting, Uttara Bhadrapada natives absorb a great deal, wait out situations that should have been ended, and mistake endurance for wisdom because the two look identical from inside.

The second difficulty is being used. A person who is reliably available and never complains will find that arrangement becoming permanent, and this star rarely renegotiates. Saturn's remedies apply, and the practical answer is unglamorous: set the limit before the resentment arrives rather than after.

Mercury falls in Uttara Bhadrapada's fourth quarter, the one detail separating it from the other three. Confirm yours with the [birth chart calculator](https://mahadasha.com/birth-chart-calculator) , then the [27-nakshatra guide](https://mahadasha.com/27-nakshatras-in-vedic-astrology) .

## Frequently asked questions

### Who is Ahirbudhnya, the deity of Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra?

The serpent of the deep, coiled at the foundation of things and identified with Shiva in later tradition. What he represents is the stillness beneath the surface, which is the quality this nakshatra is known for.

### Why is Mercury weak in Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra?

Mercury's deep debilitation degree, 15°00' Pisces, falls inside its fourth pada. Only that pada is affected. It often coincides with intuitive rather than analytical intelligence rather than with any lack of understanding.

### Are Uttara Bhadrapada natives really that calm?

It is the most consistent finding in the classical descriptions and it holds up. The calm is usually earned rather than temperamental, and the nineteen-year Saturn period this star opens on is generally where it was earned.

### Is Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra good for marriage?

Very. It is Manushya gana, which matches easily, it is classed as fixed for muhurat purposes, which favours permanence, and its natives are notably patient. Madhya nadi rules out the other eight Madhya stars for the eight-point block.
