# Uttara Ashadha Nakshatra: All Four Padas, Lord and Meaning

> Uttara Ashadha Nakshatra is the elephant's tusk, ruled by the Sun with the ten universal gods as its deity. Two vargottama padas, the mongoose yoni, and the Abhijit overlap.

# Uttara Ashadha Nakshatra: All Four Padas, Lord and Meaning

Uttara Ashadha Nakshatra runs from 26°40' Sagittarius to 10°00' Capricorn and is ruled by the Sun. Its deities are the Vishvedevas, the ten universal gods, and its symbol is an elephant's tusk. In the sky it is Nunki and Ascella, on the Archer's shoulder.

*Ashadha* means undefeated. Uttara marks it as the later of the pair, and the distinction between the two is the whole point.

## The difference between winning and having won

[Purva Ashadha](https://mahadasha.com/purva-ashadha-nakshatra) is the invincibility of water: persistence that outlasts opposition. Uttara Ashadha is what comes after. The victory that has already been achieved, cannot be reversed, and does not need defending.

Ten gods preside here rather than one, which is unique in the twenty-seven. The Vishvedevas are a collective, their exact number varies between texts, and the principle behind them stays constant regardless of the count: this is the star of consensus, of achievement that everybody agrees on, of legitimacy rather than mere power.

Power can be taken. Legitimacy has to be granted.

An elephant's tusk carries the same idea. It grows slowly, it does not fall out and regrow the way a tooth does, and it is the visible mark of an animal so far past the point of having to prove anything that the rest of the forest simply arranges itself around wherever it decides to stand.

No contest. No need for one.

People born here succeed late and completely. They are patient to a degree that frustrates everybody around them. They are hard to hurry. When they finally get somewhere, they stay. The classical texts credit them with lasting success and with an unusual degree of integrity, and the two are connected: an achievement built slowly enough is usually built honestly.

## Two vargottama padas, and the twenty-eighth nakshatra

Uttara Ashadha is one of only three nakshatras carrying two **vargottama** padas, where the rashi and the navamsa are the same sign. Its first pada is Sagittarius in Sagittarius and its second is Capricorn in Capricorn. [Punarvasu](https://mahadasha.com/punarvasu-nakshatra) and [Chitra](https://mahadasha.com/chitra-nakshatra) are the other two, and all three straddle a sign boundary.

There is a second structural fact here that no other nakshatra shares in the same way. The classical texts name a twenty-eighth nakshatra, **Abhijit**, meaning the victorious, and it occupies 6°40' to 10°53'20" of Capricorn. That arc covers the whole of Uttara Ashadha's fourth pada and spills a little into [Shravana](https://mahadasha.com/shravana-nakshatra) .

Abhijit was dropped from the standard twenty-seven because twenty-eight does not divide the circle evenly, and dasha and matching both need equal arcs. It survives in muhurat practice, where it is regarded as one of the most auspicious windows available. Uttara Ashadha's fourth pada therefore carries a second, older identity.

## All four Uttara Ashadha Nakshatra padas in detail

One quarter sits in Sagittarius and three in Capricorn. The navamsas run Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, so only Jupiter and Saturn appear as pada lords.

### Pada 1: 26°40' to 30°00' Sagittarius, Sagittarius navamsa

Jupiter rules both, and this pada is vargottama. Syllable *Bhe*.

The most expansive and most principled quarter, doubled in strength. Law, teaching, religious office, publishing, and leadership taken up as a duty rather than an ambition. Anything sitting here is hard to unseat. It is the most idealistic pada of the four and the least interested in money.

### Pada 2: 0°00' to 3°20' Capricorn, Capricorn navamsa

Saturn rules both, and this pada is vargottama too. Syllable *Bho*.

Earth doubled and reinforced. This is the builder's quarter: government, engineering, large organisations, and the forty-year career that ends at the top. It is the most materially successful pada in the star and the most joyless. Whatever is placed here endures, which cuts both ways.

### Pada 3: 3°20' to 6°40' Capricorn, Aquarius navamsa

Saturn again, in air, and Jupiter reaches its debilitation degree at 5°00' Capricorn inside this pada. Syllable *Ja*.

The systems quarter. Research, technology, public institutions, reform, and work done for a collective rather than for a household. The Jupiter debilitation gives it a sceptical, sometimes cynical streak: this pada trusts structures more than it trusts people or doctrines.

### Pada 4: 6°40' to 10°00' Capricorn, Pisces navamsa

Jupiter returns, and this entire pada sits inside Abhijit. Syllable *Ji*.

Water navamsa under earth, and the softest quarter of a hard star. Charity, healing, spiritual practice, and work with people the system has failed. Being wholly within Abhijit, it carries that older nakshatra's reputation for unassailable success, and it is generally regarded as the most fortunate 3°20' in this arc.

## Six years of Sun, and a long wait

A Moon in Uttara Ashadha opens life in [Sun Mahadasha](https://mahadasha.com/sun-mahadasha) , six years, the shortest of the nine. [Krittika](https://mahadasha.com/krittika-nakshatra) and [Uttara Phalguni](https://mahadasha.com/uttara-phalguni-nakshatra) are the other Sun stars.

Six years passes quickly and hands over to ten of Moon, then seven of Mars, then eighteen of Rahu. That sequence puts the long Rahu period across the twenties and thirties, which for a star this patient often means two decades of visible effort with very little visible result.

The sixteen years of Jupiter that follow are usually when the success arrives. Late, and permanent, which is what the nakshatra promised. Get the balance from the [dasha calculator](https://mahadasha.com/dasha-calculator) .

## The syllables Uttara Ashadha gives a child

The four are *Bhe*, *Bho*, *Ja* and *Ji*. The first two finish the *Bh* run that began in [Mula](https://mahadasha.com/mula-nakshatra) , and the last two open a *J* sequence carrying into [Shravana](https://mahadasha.com/shravana-nakshatra) .

The consonant break falls between the second and third padas, while the rashi break falls between the first and second. The two boundaries do not coincide, so knowing the Moon sign is not enough here. You need the pada, which for a straddling nakshatra is worth stating explicitly.

## When Uttara Ashadha is active in a chart

Thirteen times a year the Moon crosses Uttara Ashadha again. That is your janma nakshatra day.

The Sun, its lord, crosses the full arc in about thirteen and a half days each January, moving from Sagittarius into Capricorn on the way. That crossing coincides with Makar Sankranti, one of the few Hindu festivals fixed to a solar position rather than a lunar one.

Saturn takes thirteen months every twenty-nine and a half years and is the transit that most often delivers this star's promised outcome. Jupiter's five-month crossing every twelve years passes over its own debilitation degree in the third pada, which is worth knowing before planning anything around it.

## Work that suits Uttara Ashadha

Anything where the reward comes at the end. Government and public administration, law and the judiciary, engineering and infrastructure, academia, medicine at senior level, and the long institutional career in general.

The Vishvedevas add committee and consensus work: standards bodies, regulators, international organisations, and anything requiring many parties to agree. Capricorn contributes mining, construction and heavy industry. Uttara Ashadha is Dhruva, a fixed nakshatra, which makes it one of the best in the calendar for foundations, marriage, planting and anything meant to last.

## Marriage, gana and compatibility

Uttara Ashadha is Manushya gana, Nakula yoni, Antya nadi. The mongoose is the detail worth knowing: **it is the only nakshatra of the twenty-seven carrying this yoni**. Every other animal is shared by two stars, so thirteen yonis are doubled and this one stands alone.

That has a practical consequence in [Yoni koota](https://mahadasha.com/yoni-koota-matching) . Uttara Ashadha can never score the maximum four points for a same-yoni pairing, because there is no partner to make it with. It is also the natural enemy of the serpent, which puts [Rohini](https://mahadasha.com/rohini-nakshatra) and [Mrigashira](https://mahadasha.com/mrigashira-nakshatra) at a structural disadvantage.

### Which nakshatras actually match Uttara Ashadha

Uttara Ashadha's fixed contribution: Tara worth 3, the mongoose yoni worth 4, Manushya gana worth 6, Antya nadi worth 8.

The best partner on those 21 is [Bharani](https://mahadasha.com/bharani-nakshatra) at 19. Both are Manushya gana for the full six, the mongoose and the elephant sit comfortably, and Bharani's Madhya nadi against Antya keeps all eight nadi points.

The weakest are [Krittika](https://mahadasha.com/krittika-nakshatra) and [Magha](https://mahadasha.com/magha-nakshatra) , both at 1 of 21, where shared Antya nadi costs eight and Manushya against Rakshasa costs all six on gana. The remaining 15 turn on the Moon signs, which is what [Kundali matching](https://mahadasha.com/kundali-matching) is for.

## Reading Uttara Ashadha for planets other than the Moon

The Sun in its own nakshatra is dignified and slow-burning. In the first pada, still in Sagittarius and vargottama, it is genuinely strong.

Jupiter splits sharply. In the vargottama first pada it is in its own sign and doubled; in the third pada it sits at its exact debilitation degree. Two padas apart, opposite extremes. Saturn in the vargottama second pada is in its own sign twice over and is one of the most durable placements available anywhere. Mars is uncomfortable in this star, which has no appetite for haste. The Moon here is reserved and dutiful.

## The difficult side of Uttara Ashadha

Slowness taken as a virtue. The star is genuinely patient. It can also use patience as a way of never risking anything, Waiting for the right moment and being afraid to move look identical from the outside, and sometimes from the inside too.

The second difficulty is rigidity. A victory that cannot be reversed is also a position that cannot be updated, and Uttara Ashadha natives defend arrangements long past their usefulness because dismantling them would undo work that took decades. The remedy is the Sun's, and the practical one is to put a review date on things.

Which quarter of Uttara Ashadha matters more than the name does. [Birth chart calculator](https://mahadasha.com/birth-chart-calculator) for the pada, [27-nakshatra guide](https://mahadasha.com/27-nakshatras-in-vedic-astrology) for the context.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Abhijit part of Uttara Ashadha Nakshatra?

Abhijit, the twenty-eighth nakshatra, spans 6°40' to 10°53'20" Capricorn, which covers the whole of Uttara Ashadha's fourth pada and the first fraction of Shravana. It is excluded from dasha and matching because twenty-eight arcs do not divide the circle evenly, but it survives in muhurat practice.

### Why is the mongoose yoni unique to Uttara Ashadha?

Fourteen yonis are distributed across twenty-seven nakshatras, so thirteen animals are shared by two stars each and one is not. Uttara Ashadha holds the mongoose alone, which means it has no same-yoni partner and can never score the full four Yoni koota points.

### Which Uttara Ashadha padas are vargottama?

The first and second. Pada 1 is Sagittarius in Sagittarius navamsa and pada 2 is Capricorn in Capricorn navamsa. Only three nakshatras carry two, and all three cross a sign boundary.

### What is the difference between Purva and Uttara Ashadha?

Purva Ashadha is Venus-ruled and governs the persistence that wears opposition down. Uttara Ashadha is Sun-ruled and governs the victory that is already secured and does not need defending. The first is the campaign; the second is the settlement.
