Its four padas, the Sun's fall and Saturn's exaltation inside its arc, and what independence costs. # Swati Nakshatra: All Four Padas, Lord and Meaning Swati Nakshatra occupies 6°40' to 20°00' Libra and is ruled by Rahu. Its deity is Vayu, the wind, and its symbol is a young shoot bending in that wind. In the sky it is Arcturus, the fourth brightest star in the heavens, a distinctly orange point high in the northern sky. The name means the independent one. It also means the sword. Both readings survive and the tradition uses both. ## The shoot and the wind The symbol repays attention. A young plant in a strong wind is not being destroyed. It is being tested, and by bending it survives what a rigid thing standing in the same field would not. The wind also carries its seed away, which is the only way it ever reaches new ground.
