# Surya Mantra: 7,000 Repetitions, the Lightest of the Nine

> Seven thousand repetitions is the smallest ask in the whole navagraha set, and the Sun's first window opens at sunrise on a Sunday by construction rather than by custom.

The Surya mantra asks for 7,000 repetitions. That is the lightest count of all nine grahas, and it is worth starting there, because the number is what turns a vague instruction into something you can actually plan.

Seven thousand comes to 64 complete malas with 88 beads left over. Across the standard forty day mandala that is 1.62 malas a day, or about 7.3 minutes at an unhurried pace. Nobody needs to rearrange their life for seven minutes.

## Where it sits against the other eight

The nine counts run from this 7,000 up to Saturn's 23,000, and they total 130,000. Surya is at the bottom by a clear margin: the next lightest is Mercury at 9,000, and the median across the nine is Venus at 16,000.

Set against the Sun's six year mahadasha, the shortest of the nine, the count works out at about 1,167 repetitions per year of period. That is close to the middle of the range, which runs from Mercury's 529 to Ketu's 2,429. So the Sun is light in absolute terms and unremarkable in proportional ones.

## The mantra itself, and one thing about it

The beej form is ॐ ह्रां ह्रीं ह्रौं सः सूर्याय नमः, Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah. The three seed syllables in the middle change per graha and the frame around them does not, which is why the nine mantras look so alike written down.

Alongside it the tradition names a longer text for the Sun specifically: the Aditya Hridayam, from the Yuddha Kanda of the Ramayana, taught to Rama before the final battle. It is the one graha in the nine with a named narrative stotra of that stature attached, and it is a different kind of practice from counted japa, since it is recited rather than repeated to a number.

## Sunday, and why the first window needs no lookup

Sunday belongs to the Sun, and the first hora of any day belongs to that day's own lord. Those two facts together mean the Sun's first window on a Sunday opens exactly at sunrise, every time, with no table to consult.

The Sun's four windows land at hora positions 1, 8, 15 and 22 out of the 24, which is where every graha's own horas fall on its own day. Two by daylight, two after dark.

Worked out for 5 January 2026 at Delhi, those windows open at 07:15, 13:18, 19:53 and 03:51 the following morning. The first two run 52 minutes each and the last two 68, because January nights at Delhi are longer than the days and the night horas stretch to fill them.

The total is 240 minutes. It is always 240 minutes. Two day horas plus two night horas is a sixth of the daylight plus a sixth of the night, which is a sixth of 24 hours no matter how the two halves divide. We checked all 365 days of 2026 and it never varied.

## Sunrise moves more than people expect

If you take the sunrise anchoring seriously, you cannot set a fixed alarm. At Delhi the daylight runs from 10.283 hours at the winter solstice to 13.930 at the summer one, so sunrise swings by roughly two hours across the year and every window built on it swings with it.

The day hora length moves too, from 51.42 minutes at the shortest to 69.65 at the longest. Your 7.3 minutes of japa fits comfortably inside either, but the start time does not hold still. ## Nothing about your chart restricts this

Worth stating plainly, because it is the sharpest difference between this page and its gemstone counterpart. A  [ruby](https://mahadasha.com/ruby-gemstone)  feeds the Sun, so the classical rule licenses it for exactly three ascendants, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, and refuses it for Virgo, Capricorn and Pisces where the Sun owns the 12th, 8th and 6th.

The Surya mantra carries none of that. It propitiates rather than strengthens, so a Virgo ascendant may chant it as freely as a Leo one. If the stone came back refused for you, this is the instrument that did not.

## What the Sun signifies, and where that bites

Surya carries the father, authority, vitality, the right eye in a man's chart and the left in a woman's. It is the bhava karaka of the 1st, the 9th and the 10th houses, which are three of the four everyone calls the Sun's best.

That last fact sets up a genuine tension. Karako bhavo nashti holds that a significator sitting in the house it signifies weakens that house rather than strengthening it, so the principle applies to precisely the three houses the Sun is supposed to be happiest in. How hard it bites depends on how many co-karakas the house has: the 1st has only the Sun, so it takes the rule at full force, the 9th shares with Jupiter, and the 10th has four significators between the Sun, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn and barely feels it.

Directional strength runs the other way and is worth pairing with it. The Sun has none in the 4th house and the full measure in the 10th, on a gradient of ten units per house between them. So the 10th is simultaneously where the Sun is directionally strongest and where the significator rule would apply if it had any force left, and the four co-karakas are what settle it.

## When the Sun is actually the thing to address

The usual triggers are a running Sun mahadasha, which is six of the 120 years in the cycle, or a Sun that is measurably weak. Debilitation in Libra is the obvious case, and roughly 46% of all charts carry at least one debilitated graha, so it is not rare.

Combustion is not a Sun problem, since the Sun is the thing doing the burning, but it is useful to know which of your other grahas are inside its orb. Mercury is inside 14 degrees far more often than anything else, because it is tethered within about 28 degrees of the Sun by its orbit and cannot get away.

## What a Sunday fast adds, and what it does not

Sunday observance for the Sun usually pairs the japa with a fast and with an offering of water at sunrise. The water offering, arghya, is timed to the same moment the first hora opens, so the two instructions coincide without anyone having to arrange it.

None of this is chart-dependent, which is the recurring point of the whole cluster. The 1 mukhi rudraksha sits at the Sun's position in the bead sequence and carries no lordship test either, and Sunday charity in wheat, jaggery and copper is in the same category. Between the mantra, the bead, the fast and the daan, a reader for whom the ruby is refused still has four instruments and has lost one.

What none of them do is change which houses the Sun owns for you. That is fixed by the rising sign, it does not move, and it is the only thing the stone question ever depended on.
