# Why the Sun and Moon Never Retrograde, and What Follows

> Zero retrograde days for the Moon in fifty years of daily positions, and the Sun never once slowed below 0.95 degrees a day. Here is why neither ever could.

The Sun and Moon never retrograde. Every list of vakri grahas leaves both of them out, and unlike a great deal of received astrological rule, this one is not a convention that could have gone the other way. It is a fact about where we are standing.

We checked it anyway. Across 200 years of daily positions, the Sun's speed stayed between 0.9529 and 1.0198 degrees per day and never once approached zero. The Moon's stayed between 11.7606 and 15.3925 degrees per day. Over 18,262 consecutive days we found the Moon retrograde on exactly none of them.

## Why the Sun and Moon never retrograde, in one sentence

Retrograde motion is an overtaking illusion, and you cannot overtake yourself.

When Mars appears to reverse, what has happened is that Earth has swung past it on the inside track, so Mars slides backwards against the fixed stars for a few weeks the way a slower vehicle appears to slide backwards when you pass it. The reversal is a statement about our motion relative to the other planet's, not about the other planet.

The Sun's apparent motion around the zodiac is not the Sun moving at all. It is Earth's own orbit, reflected back at us. There is no relative motion between us and our own orbit to reverse.

The Moon is a different case with the same outcome. It genuinely does orbit us, and it does so in one direction without exception, because we are at the centre of its path rather than racing along beside it. Nothing overtakes the Moon from Earth's point of view, because Earth is the thing it is going around.

## The Sun does vary in speed, by seven per cent

0.9529 to 1.0198 degrees a day is a swing of about seven per cent between the extremes, and it is not noise. Earth's orbit is an ellipse, so we move faster when we are nearest the Sun in early January and slower when we are furthest in early July. The Sun's apparent speed inherits that exactly.

The practical consequence shows up in the calendar. Because the Sun crosses signs at different speeds through the year, the solar months are not equal. The shortest run about 29.4 days and the longest about 31.6, which is why sankranti dates drift rather than falling on a fixed schedule. What the variation never does is approach a reversal. Even at its slowest the Sun is covering nearly a degree a day, and the gap between that and standing still is enormous. There is no marginal case here and never has been.

## The Moon's thirty per cent swing is why tithis are unequal

The Moon's speed range is far wider: 11.7606 to 15.3925 degrees a day, a swing of about 31%. The cause is the same, an elliptical orbit, but the Moon's ellipse is more pronounced and the effect much larger.

Here is where that lands in practice. A tithi is defined as 12 degrees of separation opening up between the Moon and the Sun, so its length depends on how fast that gap widens. At the fast extreme, a Moon moving 15.3925 degrees a day pulling away from a Sun moving 0.9529 opens the gap at 14.44 degrees a day, and 12 degrees takes about 20 hours. At the slow extreme the gap opens at 10.74 degrees a day and the same tithi takes nearly 27 hours.

So a tithi can run anywhere from roughly 20 to 27 hours, and that spread is the entire reason a tithi can be skipped or repeated relative to sunrise. It is not a quirk of the calendar. ## The Moon can be burnt even though it cannot reverse

The two conditions are independent, and the Moon participates in the second one normally. Across the same 200 year scan, the Moon was inside the combustion orb on 6.59% of days.

That figure is worth unpacking, because it turns out to mean something very concrete. The Moon's combustion orb is 12 degrees, so the burnt window runs 12 degrees either side of the Sun, which is 24 degrees out of 360, or 6.67% of a lunation. The measured 6.59% matches almost exactly.

And 12 degrees either side of the Sun is the new moon. A combust Moon in a birth chart means, in plain terms, born within about a day of amavasya. That is a fact about the phase, not a separate affliction discovered in the degrees, and it appears in 6.98% of charts, roughly one in fourteen. The Sun, for obvious reasons, is the one body that can never be combust. It cannot be too close to itself.

## What follows for reading the luminaries

Because neither light can reverse, neither ever carries a motional modifier. Everything a Sun or Moon placement means comes from sign, house, nakshatra, aspect and condition, with nothing added or subtracted for direction of travel. That is a small simplification and a real one: two of the nine grahas have one fewer variable than the rest.

The Moon does have a speed variable, and it matters more than people expect for a different reason. At 15.39 degrees a day the Moon covers a whole nakshatra in under 21 hours. At 11.76 it takes over 27. And an hour of uncertainty in a recorded birth time shifts the Moon by up to 0.64 degrees, which is about a fifth of a nakshatra pada.

So if a birth time is remembered rather than recorded, the Moon's pada is the first thing to treat as provisional, and it is worth checking whether it sits near a boundary before building anything on it. There is one more thing worth saying about the Moon here, because it fills the gap that the missing motional variable leaves. What the Moon has instead of a direction is a phase, and the tradition treats it as a strength measure under the name paksha bala. A waxing Moon scores high and a waning one low, with the extremes at full and new.

That is a genuine variable, it splits the population roughly in half, and it is doing the job that retrograde motion does for the other five. If you are used to asking whether a planet is reversed, the equivalent question for the Moon is which fortnight it was born in, and the combust case above is simply the bottom of that scale.

## The two that are always reversed

The luminaries sit at one end of a spectrum: never retrograde, no exceptions, no marginal cases. At the other end sit Rahu and Ketu, which are retrograde on 100% of days in the scheme this site uses, and for a reason just as structural.
