Whether or not that was designed, it puts the chart of illness on the house the tradition gives to what does not resolve. # Shashthamsha Chart (D6): Health, Illness and the Enemies You Make The Shashthamsha chart (D6) opens out the sixth house, which in this tradition is a single house covering three things that sit together uneasily in a modern mind: illness, enemies, and debt. It also covers service and daily work, though those tend to be read from the birth chart directly. Before anything else, the constraint. This chart is not diagnostic. It cannot name a condition, it cannot rule one out, and it does not replace a doctor. Read on with that fixed, because everything below is about tendency rather than about medicine. ## How the Shashthamsha chart (D6) is derived Each sign divides into six parts of 5 degrees. The count begins from the sign itself for a movable sign, from the eighth sign for a fixed sign, and from the fifth for a dual sign. Take a planet at 22 degrees Leo. Twenty two divided by five puts it in the fifth part. Leo is fixed, so the count starts from the eighth sign from Leo, which is Pisces. Five parts on from Pisces, counting Pisces as the first, gives Cancer. The eighth sign start is the interesting choice. In house terms the eighth is chronic conditions, hidden processes and things that do not resolve on schedule, which is the exact register of the sixth house's harder side. If you are choosing between them for a serious question, choose the D30. ## What the Shashthamsha chart (D6) shows Susceptibility rather than illness. The chart describes where the constitution is thin and what kind of pressure it does not handle well. That is a tendency, and tendencies are modifiable, which is the useful part. Enemies and opposition, in the sixth house sense of people whose interests run against yours. This includes litigation and disputes. A chart with heavy affliction here often belongs to somebody who attracts conflict without seeking it, and the useful reading is about which arenas rather than about which people. Debt, both the financial kind and the older sense of obligations carried forward. The sixth is the house of what you owe, and the D6 describes the shape of it rather than the size. Whether the debt is a mortgage or a favour is a birth chart question about which planets are involved. Service, meaning employment under somebody else, work performed for others, and the discipline of routine. This gets forgotten because the difficult significations are louder, and a strong sixth is genuinely useful for anybody whose work is service based. ## The house that improves with age The sixth is an upachaya house, which means it is expected to strengthen over a lifetime rather than weaken. A chart heavy with malefic influence here often describes somebody who was ill or embattled young and grew durable through it, rather than somebody carrying a permanent liability. The reading is developmental, and stating it as a fixed condition misses the point of the house entirely. It is also the practical answer to the anxiety this chart tends to produce. Whatever the sixth house shows, the direction of travel is usually towards competence. ## How to read it without overreaching Begin with the sixth house of the birth chart, its lord, and the condition of Saturn and Mars, the two planets most involved in this territory. Then cross over. Where did the birth chart's sixth lord land in the Shashthamsha, and what is its dignity there? That is the single most informative step, and it explains most cases where a benign looking sixth house has produced a difficult history. Read the D6 ascendant and its lord for the general tone. And then stop. This chart supports statements like "the constitution runs low on reserves under sustained stress" and does not support statements about organs, diagnoses or dates. The distance between those two kinds of sentence is where astrology loses its credibility fastest. ## Birth time and precision A 5 degree division takes the ascendant about twenty minutes to cross, so the D6 lagna is reasonably robust. A time good to within ten minutes will usually hold.
