# Shankhpal Kaal Sarp Dosh: Rahu in the 4th, Ketu in the 10th

> Both ends of this axis are angular houses, so the whole configuration sits on the structural spine of the chart rather than off to one side of it.

Shankhpal Kaal Sarp Dosh has a structural feature that only one other type shares: both ends of its axis are angular houses.

It forms when Rahu occupies the 4th and Ketu the 10th, with all seven classical grahas contained in the half between them. It is 7.50% of formed cases, or 0.28% of all charts, since the configuration itself appears in 3.69% of charts.

The kendras, houses 1, 4, 7 and 10, are the load bearing houses of a chart. Six of the twelve types put the nodal axis somewhere else. This one puts it directly across the 4th and 10th, which is the axis of where you come from against where you are going.

## Shankhpal Kaal Sarp Dosh sits entirely on the angles

Angular houses are where the classical texts place the planets that determine the shape of a life rather than its details. A graha in a kendra acts. A graha in a cadent house comments.

So this type, along with the 1 and 7 pair, puts the nodes where they carry the most structural weight. That is a real distinction between the twelve and it is one of the few that survives examination, because it comes from the house system rather than from the naming.

It does not make the type more severe, and nothing in the measurements suggests it. Shankhpal is 7.50% of formed cases against a flat expectation of 8.33%, on the low side of a range that runs 7.05% to 9.39% and whose extremes move between sampling windows. What it does mean is that the axis is harder to ignore in the reading, because the houses it occupies are the ones everything else is measured against.

## The 4 and 10 axis, read properly

Rahu in the 4th amplifies the interior. The 4th is home, mother, land, vehicles, the emotional foundation, and the private sense of being settled. Rahu enlarges the appetite for all of it while making it curiously hard to satisfy, which is Rahu's characteristic move: the hunger grows faster than what feeds it.

The recognisable expression is a person who moves house often while wanting to be settled, or who builds a home with real intensity and remains restless inside it. Foreign residence is a common enough theme here that it is worth mentioning, since Rahu carries the significations of the distant and the unfamiliar.

Ketu in the 10th subtracts from public standing. Not from capability, and not usually from achievement, but from the appetite for being seen achieving. The classical reading is of someone who does the work and finds the recognition genuinely uninteresting, which reads as modesty from outside and as indifference from inside.

Our [Rahu in the 4th house](https://mahadasha.com/rahu-in-4th-house) and [Ketu in the 10th house](https://mahadasha.com/ketu-in-10th-house) pages carry the placement readings.

## The marginal case this type makes easy to spot

Among charts where the configuration formed, a graha sat within 1.5 degrees of the nodal axis itself in 10.93% of cases. That is one formed dosha in nine sitting on a knife edge.

A planet that close to Rahu or Ketu is inside the containment by a fraction of a degree, and a slightly different birth time, a slightly different ayanamsa or a different node calculation can put it outside. Two competent astrologers will disagree about those charts, and both will be applying the rule correctly.

This matters more here than in most types because the angular houses are the ones the ascendant controls most directly. A birth time out by twenty minutes moves the whole house structure, and with it the answer to whether the axis falls across the 4th and 10th at all. The [Kaal Sarp calculator](https://mahadasha.com/kaal-sarp-dosh-calculator) reports what the recorded time produces, which is not the same as what the birth produced if the record is rough.

The practical rule: if a planet is within a couple of degrees of either node, treat the verdict as provisional rather than settled, and say so rather than picking a side.

## The foreign residence reading, and where it comes from

Of all the claims attached to this type, the one about living far from where you were born is the best grounded, and it is worth seeing why rather than taking it on trust.

Rahu carries the significations of the foreign, the unfamiliar and the outside: things that arrive from beyond the boundary and do not belong to the inherited order. The 4th house is home, land and the place you are from. Put the two together and you have a house of belonging occupied by the graha of the unfamiliar, which is a coherent reason to expect a complicated relationship with location.

What that produces in practice is less dramatic than the claim usually made for it. The common expression is not necessarily emigration. It is a home that is chosen rather than inherited, a place that had to be found rather than accepted, and frequently more than one attempt at finding it. Some of those people move countries. Many move towns, or simply move away from the house they grew up in and never quite settle on a replacement.

The distinction matters because the strong version of the claim is a prediction and the weak version is a description. Only one of them is supported by having a node in a house.

## Ghatak is this axis from the other end

[Ghatak Kaal Sarp Dosh](https://mahadasha.com/ghatak-kaal-sarp-dosh) reverses it, with Rahu in the 10th and Ketu in the 4th. Together the pair account for 15.99% of formed cases, the smallest combined share of the six axes, though the gap between it and the largest is well inside the noise.

The reversal inverts the reading cleanly. Shankhpal wants the foundation and shrugs at the public role. Ghatak wants the public role and shrugs at the foundation. Same axis, opposite appetite, and neither is a better chart to have.

## What to check before any of this applies

More than one chart in four, 27.73% of them, has six grahas inside the arc and one outside. Those charts are not carrying a weaker form of this configuration. They are carrying no form of it, and the distance between the two verdicts is a single planet.

The planet that most often escapes is the Moon, which crosses the whole zodiac in 27 days, so it is also the reason a birth time that is a few hours out can flip the answer. Our general [Kaal Sarp Dosha page](https://mahadasha.com/kaal-sarp-dosha) covers the definition and the overdiagnosis problem in more detail.

## On the name

Shankhpal is one of the naga names from the Puranic serpent lists, assigned to this position by convention. It carries no meaning that transfers to the reading, and the flat frequency distribution across the twelve types is the evidence: no name in the list is measurably rarer or commoner than the others in a way that holds up across samples.

## Frequently asked questions about Shankhpal Kaal Sarp Dosh

### What is Shankhpal Kaal Sarp Dosh?

The type formed when Rahu sits in the 4th house and Ketu in the 10th, with all seven classical grahas contained between them. It is 7.50% of formed cases and about 0.28% of all charts.

### Does Shankhpal Kaal Sarp Dosh affect the home or the mother?

Rahu in the 4th describes an enlarged and hard to satisfy appetite around home and foundation, which often shows as frequent moves or a long search for the right place. The mother has her own significators, chiefly the Moon and the 4th lord, and one node is one input among several.

### Why does this type matter more structurally than others?

Because both its houses are angular. The kendras carry the load in a chart, so an axis across the 4th and 10th is harder to read around than one across, say, the 3rd and 9th. That is a statement about visibility in the reading, not about severity.

### What if a planet is sitting right on the axis?

Then the verdict is genuinely contested. That happens in 10.93% of formed cases, and a planet within 1.5 degrees of a node can fall inside or outside depending on the birth time, the ayanamsa and the node calculation. Treat those charts as provisional.

### How is Shankhpal different from Ghatak?

They are the same axis with the ends swapped. Shankhpal has Rahu in the 4th, Ghatak has Rahu in the 10th, and together they account for 15.99% of formed cases.
