# Ruby Gemstone: Licensed for Three Ascendants, Refused by Three

A ruby gemstone, manik in the Indian trade, belongs to the Sun. That is the easy part and every page agrees on it. The part almost nobody works out is that the Sun owns exactly one sign, and owning one sign rather than two changes the shape of the answer completely.

Here is what it changes. When a graha owns two signs, it can end up ruling a good house and a difficult house at the same time for the same ascendant, and then the astrologers start arguing. The Sun owns Leo and nothing else. So for any given rising sign, Surya rules exactly one house, that house is either welcome or it is not, and there is no third possibility.

## Who a ruby gemstone is actually for

Three ascendants, and they are the fire trine: **Aries, Leo and Sagittarius**.

Work it through. Aries rising puts Leo on the 5th, a trine. Leo rising puts it on the 1st. Sagittarius rising puts it on the 9th, the other trine. In all three the Sun is a trine lord with nothing complicating it.

Why those three and not some scattered set? Because Leo is a fire sign, and a sign sits in a trine from every member of its own element. The licensed set had to be the fire trine. It could not have been anything else, and you can derive it without touching an ephemeris.

## Who should leave it alone

Virgo, Capricorn and Pisces rising. In those three the Sun rules the 12th, the 8th and the 6th respectively, the three houses classical astrology treats as the difficult ones, and it rules no trine to offset them.

Strengthening a graha that owns only your 8th house is a strange thing to do deliberately. The stone does not know that you wanted confidence and were not asking for more 8th house activity. It feeds the graha, and the graha carries the houses it owns.

The remaining six ascendants get a Sun that rules the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 10th or 11th. Not a trine, not a dusthana. Manik there is a decision rather than a rule, and it usually depends on whether the Sun is strong enough to be worth amplifying at all.

## Nobody rising gets an argument about it

This is the quiet consequence of one sign. Across all twelve ascendants there is not a single case where the Sun owns both a trine and a difficult house, because it only owns one house to begin with. Three clear yeses, three clear noes, six shrugs, and zero disputed cases.

Compare that with Mercury or Venus, where three of the twelve ascendants land in genuinely contested territory. The ruby is the least argued-about stone in the set, and that is a property of Leo being a single sign rather than anything to do with the Sun's nature.

## The Sun can never be a yogakaraka

A yogakaraka owns a kendra and a trine at once, and it is the strongest licence a stone can get. The Sun is structurally locked out of it. One sign means one house, and one house cannot be two things unless it is the 1st, which is excluded from the test precisely because it is both.

So ruby never reaches the top tier of recommendation for anybody. The best it manages is a clean trine lordship for three ascendants, and that is a genuinely good position, but it is not the same as the licence red coral gets for Cancer and Leo rising.

## How many people this actually clears

Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are three of twelve, so the arithmetic says 25.00% of ascendants. Ascendants are not equally common though, because signs do not take equal time to rise. Measured across twelve thousand real births at Delhi, Leo comes up 9.57% of the time and Aries only 6.47%, a gap of nearly half again.

Add the three licensed signs at their real frequencies and the ruby is licensed for 25.12% of people. Refused for 22.87%. The arithmetic prediction survives the unequal rising times almost untouched, which is a small piece of luck: the licensed set happens to mix a common sign with a rare one.

It does not always work out that way. Diamond is licensed for 23.03% of people against the same 25.00% prediction, because two of its three ascendants are among the four rarest. ## Where the Sun's strength actually comes from

Lordship tells you whether to strengthen. It says nothing about whether the graha needs it. Those are separate readings and running them together is the commonest mistake in this whole subject.

Surya is exalted in Aries and falls in Libra. It gains directional strength in the 10th house and has none in the 4th. A Leo ascendant with an exalted Sun in the 9th and a Leo ascendant with a debilitated Sun in the 3rd both get the same verdict from the table above. Both are licensed. Whether either of them should bother is a different conversation.

## The practical details, with one caveat

Our engine carries a ruby at 3 to 5 carats, set in gold, worn on the ring finger, first put on a Sunday. Sunday follows from the Sun owning that weekday, and the same logic gives every one of the seven sign-owning grahas its day in order.

The caveat is the unit. A carat is exactly 200 milligrams, which is an international definition with no ambiguity in it. Ratti is a traditional seed weight and it is not standardised the same way, so a five ratti manik and a five carat manik are different stones and the difference is not small. Ask which unit a quoted weight is in before anything else.

The Sunday instruction is worth taking a little more precisely than it usually is. If you want the Sun's own hora as well as its weekday, that window opens at sunrise, and on a Sunday the first hora of the day belongs to the Sun by construction. ## If the ruby is refused for you

You have lost one instrument, not the subject.
