# Rohini Nakshatra: All Four Padas, Lord and Meaning

> Rohini Nakshatra is Aldebaran, the Moon's own favourite among the twenty-seven. Its four padas, its ten-year Moon dasha, and why the tradition treats it as the most fertile star.

# Rohini Nakshatra: All Four Padas, Lord and Meaning

Rohini Nakshatra occupies 10°00' to 23°20' Taurus and is ruled by the Moon. Its deity is Prajapati Brahma, the creator, and its symbol is an ox-cart, a vehicle for carrying a harvest. In the sky it is Aldebaran, the red eye of the Bull, one of the brightest stars visible from the northern hemisphere and impossible to mistake once you have found it.

This is the star the tradition treats as the most fertile of the twenty-seven, and every part of the description points the same way: growth, beauty, ripening, and things that are wanted.

## The Moon's own favourite

There is a story behind Rohini's reputation and it is worth telling because it explains the star's shadow as well as its light. Chandra, the Moon, married all twenty-seven daughters of Daksha, who are the twenty-seven nakshatras. He then spent nearly all his time with Rohini and neglected the rest. The other twenty-six complained to their father, and Daksha cursed the Moon to waste away. The waxing and waning cycle is the residue of that curse.

Every month, the Moon pays for a preference.

Two things follow. Rohini is where the Moon is happiest, and the whole sign of Taurus is where it exalts, with the exact degree sitting just before Rohini begins, in [Krittika](https://mahadasha.com/krittika-nakshatra) . And the favour Rohini attracts is the kind that causes resentment elsewhere. Being the preferred one is not a neutral position.

All four padas sit inside Taurus, so Venus is the rashi lord throughout and the Moon rules the star. Venus and the Moon together, in an earth sign, with a creator deity. The tradition is not being subtle about what this star produces.

## What Rohini Nakshatra gives

The classical texts name physical attractiveness directly, which is unusual. Most nakshatra descriptions stick to temperament. Beyond appearance, they return again and again to the same cluster of gifts: artistic ability, a good speaking or singing voice, magnetism, and an instinct for material comfort so reliable that a Rohini native walking into an unfamiliar house will generally know within a minute whether the people who live there are doing well.

But the deeper quality is growth. Rohini natives make things flourish. A garden, a business, a child, a piece of work: the instinct transfers. They understand that things need time and conditions rather than force, which is the opposite of the three nakshatras before them.

They understand seasons. That is rarer than it sounds.

The corresponding weakness is that they can be difficult to move once settled, and they are not always honest with themselves about the difference between wanting something and needing it.

## All four Rohini Nakshatra padas in detail

The padas run Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, the same sequence as [Ashwini](https://mahadasha.com/ashwini-nakshatra) and seven others. What is different here is the rashi beneath them, Taurus throughout, and the star lord, the Moon.

### Pada 1: 10°00' to 13°20' Taurus, Aries navamsa

Mars takes the navamsa, which is the sharpest thing that happens to this star. Syllable *O*.

Fire under earth gives Rohini some drive it otherwise lacks. This quarter is the most ambitious and the most impatient, full of people who want the harvest and are not content to wait through the season. It produces entrepreneurs and competitive performers, and it carries more temper than the rest of the nakshatra.

### Pada 2: 13°20' to 16°40' Taurus, Taurus navamsa

Venus rules both the rashi and the navamsa. Syllable *Va*.

This is Rohini at its most characteristic and, by most readings, its strongest. Doubled Venus in an earth sign under the Moon is the classical picture of beauty, wealth and sensual comfort, and this quarter usually delivers on it. Art, luxury, food, land and finance all sit here. The risk is complacency. Nothing in this pada argues for effort.

### Pada 3: 16°40' to 20°00' Taurus, Gemini navamsa

Mercury takes the navamsa and Rohini learns to talk. Syllable *Vi*.

The magnetism turns verbal here: persuasion, negotiation, teaching, media, sales. This is the most commercially adaptable quarter, and the one most likely to be running several interests at once. It is also the least settled of the four, because Gemini has no interest in staying put.

### Pada 4: 20°00' to 23°20' Taurus, Cancer navamsa

The Moon takes the navamsa as well as the star. Syllable *Vu*.

This is the most emotional and most domestic quarter of Rohini, and the most genuinely nurturing. Home, family, food, property and care work all belong here. The Moon doubled gives strong intuition and equally strong moods, and this pada feels slights that the other three would not notice.

## A ten-year Moon opening

A Moon in Rohini opens life in [Moon Mahadasha](https://mahadasha.com/moon-mahadasha) , ten years. [Hasta](https://mahadasha.com/hasta-nakshatra) and [Shravana](https://mahadasha.com/shravana-nakshatra) are the other two Moon-ruled stars.

Ten years of Moon over childhood is about as comfortable an opening as the system offers. It tends to describe a close relationship with the mother, a settled early home, and emotional needs that were largely met. The seven-year Mars period that follows is where that changes, usually sharply enough to be remembered.

## Work that suits Rohini

Anything that grows. Agriculture and horticulture head the classical list and they still hold, alongside food, hospitality, textiles, cosmetics, jewellery, interior work and the fine arts.

Beyond that, Rohini does well anywhere magnetism is the product: performance, broadcasting, modelling, brand work, and client-facing roles where being liked is most of the job. Banking and land appear too. Taurus stores value, and this star knows how. Rohini is Dhruva, a fixed nakshatra, which makes it one of the best in the zodiac for foundations, planting, and anything intended to last.

## Marriage, gana and compatibility

Rohini is Manushya gana, Sarpa yoni, Antya nadi. The serpent yoni is the one detail that surprises people, given how benign the rest of the star is, and it is shared with [Mrigashira](https://mahadasha.com/mrigashira-nakshatra) immediately after it. Its natural opposition in [Yoni koota](https://mahadasha.com/yoni-koota-matching) is the mongoose.

Traditional matching rates Rohini among the most desirable nakshatras for a bride, largely on the strength of its fertility symbolism and Moon rulership. Antya nadi is the practical constraint, because an Antya partner scores zero on the eight points of [Nadi koota](https://mahadasha.com/nadi-koota-matching) , and Antya is shared with Krittika next door, so the neighbouring star is not the easy match it looks like.

### Which nakshatras actually match Rohini

Rohini's share of the fixed portion: Tara 3, the serpent yoni 4, Manushya gana 6, Antya nadi 8. Twenty-one of thirty-six.

Rohini's best partner on those 21 is [Mrigashira](https://mahadasha.com/mrigashira-nakshatra) , and at 20 out of 21 it is the highest single pairing anywhere in this cluster. The two share the serpent yoni, which scores the full four; Manushya and Deva gana score five of six; and Antya against Madhya nadi protects the whole eight-point block. Only Tara falls short of maximum.

The weakest is [Magha](https://mahadasha.com/magha-nakshatra) at 1 of 21: shared Antya nadi, the rat against the serpent, and Manushya against Rakshasa. The remaining 15 turn on the Moon signs, which is what [Kundali matching](https://mahadasha.com/kundali-matching) is for.

## Reading Rohini for planets other than the Moon

Rohini flatters most planets, which is part of why it has the reputation it does.

The Moon in its own nakshatra, exalted by sign, is the classical high point: emotionally stable, magnetic, and comfortable. Venus here is close to its best in the zodiac and gives real artistic gift alongside real self-indulgence. Jupiter in Rohini is generous and well-fed, sometimes to the point of complacency. Mercury is commercially sharp, particularly in the third pada.

The two that struggle are the ones that dislike comfort. Saturn in Rohini finds nothing to discipline and often produces a slow, resistant streak, and Mars becomes possessive rather than energetic. Ketu here is the awkward one. It wants to let go of exactly what this star exists to accumulate.

## The syllables Rohini gives a child

Rohini's four are *O*, *Va*, *Vi* and *Vu*. The first pada continues the vowel run that [Krittika](https://mahadasha.com/krittika-nakshatra) started, and then the remaining three switch to *V*, which is written and pronounced as *W* in much of northern India.

That transliteration split matters if you are working from a printed list. *Va* and *Wa* are the same instruction, and a family told one and shown the other will assume something has gone wrong. Only the first pada breaks the pattern, so if the birth time is uncertain and the Moon was anywhere past 13°20' Taurus, a *V* or *W* name is safe.

## The difficult side of Rohini

Attachment. This star wants. Wanting is not a flaw until it becomes the organising principle of a life. The classical criticisms run to materialism, possessiveness, and a certain shallowness of judgement about attractive people.

The Daksha story carries a second lesson. Rohini expects to be chosen, and the family usually obliges. The world outside does not. When it is not met, the reaction tends to be withdrawal rather than confrontation. The withdrawal can last years.

Rohini sits wholly inside Taurus, so the rashi is never in question here, only the quarter. The [birth chart calculator](https://mahadasha.com/birth-chart-calculator) reports it, and the [27-nakshatra guide](https://mahadasha.com/27-nakshatras-in-vedic-astrology) places this star among the rest.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Rohini Nakshatra the best nakshatra?

It ranks among the most favoured, particularly for marriage and material comfort, and the Moon is happiest here. Whether that makes it best depends on what you want a chart to do. Rohini is weak on detachment and on tolerance for hardship.

### Does the Moon exalt in Rohini Nakshatra?

The Moon exalts in Taurus, and Rohini sits entirely inside Taurus, so a Moon here is exalted by sign. Always. The exact degree of deep exaltation, 3°00' Taurus, falls earlier, in Krittika's second pada.

### Which Rohini Nakshatra pada is the most fortunate?

The second, in Taurus navamsa, where Venus rules both sign and navamsa under a Moon-ruled star. It is the classical picture of beauty and wealth. The fourth is the most emotionally rich, the first the most driven.

### Why is Rohini Nakshatra favoured for marriage?

Its symbolism is fertility and growth, its lord is the Moon, its rashi lord is Venus. Both marriage significators are therefore involved. Manushya gana also matches easily. The one thing to check is nadi, since Rohini is Antya.
