# Rahu and Ketu Always Retrograde: The Rule and Its One Exception

> One hundred per cent of 73,049 days, which sounds like a law until you learn it depends on which of two node calculations your software uses.

Rahu and Ketu always retrograde is the one motion rule in this subject that gets stated without hedging, and it is very nearly true. Across 73,049 consecutive days, using the calculation this site runs on, the nodes were retrograde on 100.00% of them. Not most days. All of them.

The hedge is real though, and it is worth knowing about, because a different and equally legitimate way of computing the same two points gives a different answer about a quarter of the time.

## Why Rahu and Ketu always retrograde is a claim about geometry

Neither node is a body. There is nothing out there to see. The Moon's orbit is tilted about five degrees against the plane of Earth's orbit, so the two planes cut each other along a line, and that line pierces the zodiac at two opposite points. Those points are Rahu and Ketu.

The line does not sit still. The Sun's pull on the Moon drags the whole tilted orbit slowly around, and the direction that dragging happens to work is backwards through the signs. The line of nodes makes a full circuit of the zodiac in about 18.6 years, moving the wrong way the entire time.

So nothing is orbiting backwards. A line is rotating, and it rotates westward. That is a permanent property of the Earth and Moon and Sun arrangement rather than a phase, which is why there is no retrograde season for Rahu and never has been.

It also means the nodes spend about a year and a half in each sign, working through them in reverse order, which is the opposite of every other body in the chart.

## The exception, and it is a calculation rather than a sky event

Ephemeris software offers two versions of the nodes. The mean node smooths the motion into a steady backward drift. The true node tracks the instantaneous intersection, wobble included, because the Moon's orbit is perturbed by the Sun and does not precess at a perfectly even rate.

The wobble is enough to reverse the direction briefly. Over the same 73,049 days, the true node was retrograde on 74.26% and direct on 25.74%. Those direct stretches came in 5,097 separate spells, each lasting between 1 and 9 days, averaging 3.69 days. That works out at around 25 short direct spells a year.

This site computes charts with the mean node, so on every chart it produces, Rahu and Ketu are retrograde without exception. On a chart cast with the true node, the same statement is a strong generalisation rather than a law, and a birth falling inside one of those brief direct windows would show a forward moving Rahu.

Neither choice is wrong. The mean node is the classical intent and gives stable, reproducible positions. The true node is the physically instantaneous one. What matters is knowing which your chart used, because the two can differ by more than a degree and a half, which is enough to move Rahu across a nakshatra boundary.

## Ketu is not a separate calculation

Ketu is defined as the point exactly opposite Rahu, 180 degrees away, and both are ends of the same line. Every statement about Rahu's motion is automatically a statement about Ketu's, at the same speed and in the same direction.

This is worth saying plainly because software sometimes prints a retrograde marker beside one and not the other, or a reading treats them as two independently moving bodies. They are one axis with two ends. If Rahu moves a degree backwards, Ketu moves a degree backwards, and the axis stays exactly where it was relative to itself.

## The backward drift has two practical consequences

The first is the flip. A full circuit takes about 18.6 years, so half a circuit takes about 9.3, and half a circuit is exactly what it takes for Rahu to arrive where Ketu was. Every nine years and a bit, the axis swaps ends in your chart. The house that spent the last stretch hosting Rahu's appetite spends the next one hosting Ketu's withdrawal from the same subject, and then they trade back.

Most people can find that rhythm in their own history once they know to look for it, and it is far more useful than anything the motion direction is usually asked to explain.

The second consequence is smaller and catches people out. Because the nodes travel backwards, Rahu enters a sign at its final degree and leaves at its first. A transit that would normally light up your early degrees first will light up your late ones first instead. If you are mapping when a nodal transit reaches a natal point, count from the top of the sign downward, not the other way.

## The nodes cannot be combust either

Combustion is the Sun overwhelming a planet's visible light. Rahu and Ketu have no light and no disc, so the shared orb table that assigns Mars 17 degrees, Saturn 15 and Mercury 14 gives the nodes no entry at all.

A Sun conjunct Rahu is a real configuration and a well studied one, but what it describes is the eclipse geometry, not a burning. Reading it as combustion imports a mechanism that does not apply. ## What always retrograde does to the interpretation

Here is the part that gets skipped. A great deal of writing explains Rahu's character by pointing at its backward motion: it moves against the current, so it operates against convention; it goes the wrong way, so it inverts whatever it touches.

That explanation cannot do any work. A property present in 100% of cases distinguishes nothing. If every Rahu in every chart ever cast is retrograde, the motion cannot be what separates one Rahu from another, and any reading built on it applies identically to everybody.

What actually differentiates a Rahu is the ordinary machinery: which house it occupies, which sign, who owns that sign and where that owner sits, and what it is conjunct or aspected by. ## The axis that moves backwards, and the configuration built on it

One consequence of the nodes running in reverse is that the whole Rahu to Ketu axis sweeps backwards through the chart, so any configuration defined by that axis forms and dissolves in reverse order too.

### Are Rahu and Ketu always retrograde in every system?

### Why are the nodes retrograde at all?

They are not objects moving backwards. They are the two points where the Moon's tilted orbit crosses the ecliptic, and the Sun's pull drags that whole tilted orbit slowly westward. The crossing points inherit that westward drift and complete a circuit in about 18.6 years.

### Does a retrograde Rahu mean anything special in a birth chart?

It cannot, because every Rahu in every mean node chart is retrograde. A feature shared by 100% of charts carries no information about any of them. The house, the sign, the dispositor and the conjunctions are what make one Rahu different from another.

### Can Rahu or Ketu be combust?
