# Pushya Nakshatra: All Four Padas, Lord and Meaning

> Pushya Nakshatra is widely called the most auspicious of the twenty-seven. Its four padas, the Saturn-Jupiter tension at its centre, and Guru's exaltation in its first pada.

# Pushya Nakshatra: All Four Padas, Lord and Meaning

Pushya Nakshatra occupies 3°20' to 16°40' Cancer and is ruled by Saturn. Its deity is Brihaspati, teacher of the gods, and its symbol is a cow's udder. In the sky it is the Beehive cluster, a soft smudge of stars in the middle of Cancer that is easier to see with the corner of your eye than by looking straight at it.

The tradition calls Pushya the most auspicious of the twenty-seven, and it is one of the few claims in this subject that almost every source agrees on.

## Why Pushya is called the best

The name means to nourish, to nurture, to make flourish. The udder is not a decorative symbol. It is the specific image of something that produces what another creature needs, on demand, without being asked, at cost to itself.

Three things stack up here. Cancer is the Moon's own sign and the most protective in the zodiac. Brihaspati is the deity, and Brihaspati is Jupiter, the greatest benefic. And Jupiter's deep exaltation degree, 5°00' Cancer, falls inside Pushya's first pada. There is nowhere else in the zodiac where the guru principle is that concentrated.

Muhurat practice takes this seriously. Pushya is the default choice for beginning almost anything, and Guru Pushya Yoga, when Pushya falls on a Thursday, is one of the most sought-after windows in the Hindu calendar for purchases and new ventures. The single exception is marriage, which tradition avoids under Pushya, and the reason given is a story about the marriage of the nakshatra's own deity going badly.

## The Saturn and Jupiter problem at its centre

Here is the thing that makes Pushya more interesting than its reputation. It is ruled by Saturn but presided over by Jupiter, and those two want fundamentally different things. Saturn restricts, delays and requires. Jupiter expands, forgives and gives.

People born under this star live inside that argument. They are usually generous and usually careful about it. They give reliably rather than lavishly. They carry other people and privately keep score. The classical descriptions of Pushya natives as dutiful, conservative and quietly resentful are all describing the same structural tension, and it is worth naming rather than smoothing over.

All four padas sit in Cancer, so the Moon is the rashi lord throughout, which adds a third voice to the argument and is why Pushya feels so much and says so little.

## All four Pushya Nakshatra padas in detail

The padas run Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio.

### Pada 1: 3°20' to 6°40' Cancer, Leo navamsa

The Sun takes the navamsa, and Jupiter reaches its exaltation degree at 5°00' Cancer inside this quarter. Syllable *Hu*.

The most confident and most visible pada of the star. Nourishment here becomes leadership: the person who feeds the family, runs the department, holds the position. Any planet in the first two degrees of this pada is sitting on the strongest Jupiter degree in the zodiac, which is why this 3°20' is disproportionately represented in the charts of teachers and public figures.

### Pada 2: 6°40' to 10°00' Cancer, Virgo navamsa

Mercury takes the navamsa. Syllable *He*.

The service pada. Nursing, dietetics, administration, agriculture, accounting, and any work where care is expressed as competence rather than warmth. This quarter worries. It is the most conscientious of the four and the most likely to be doing something useful at eleven at night that nobody asked for.

### Pada 3: 10°00' to 13°20' Cancer, Libra navamsa

Venus takes the navamsa. Syllable *Ho*.

Here Pushya's care turns outward into relationship. Counselling, hospitality, diplomacy, the arts, and family life taken seriously as a project. It is the warmest quarter and the most socially skilled, and it is also the one most likely to keep the peace at its own expense.

### Pada 4: 13°20' to 16°40' Cancer, Scorpio navamsa

Mars takes the navamsa. Syllable *Da*.

Water on water, and the deepest and most private quarter. The nourishing instinct goes toward what is wounded: medicine, psychology, hospice, research into difficult things. This pada has more force in it than the rest of Pushya and a longer memory. It protects fiercely and it does not forget an injury.

## Nineteen years of Saturn from the start

A Moon in Pushya opens life in [Saturn Mahadasha](https://mahadasha.com/saturn-mahadasha) , nineteen years, the second longest of the nine. [Anuradha](https://mahadasha.com/anuradha-nakshatra) and [Uttara Bhadrapada](https://mahadasha.com/uttara-bhadrapada-nakshatra) are the other Saturn stars.

This is the counterweight to the star's auspicious reputation and it is a real one. Nineteen years of Shani over childhood and adolescence typically means responsibility early, a household short of something, and a childhood that felt longer than other people's. What it builds is competence.

The seventeen-year Mercury period that follows is generally the making of them. Check the balance with the [dasha calculator](https://mahadasha.com/dasha-calculator) .

## The syllables Pushya gives a child

Pushya's four are *Hu*, *He*, *Ho* and *Da*, continuing the *H* sequence that [Punarvasu](https://mahadasha.com/punarvasu-nakshatra) began before switching to *D* in the final quarter.

The three-to-one break is the same shape as Punarvasu's, and it means an approximate birth time is usually safe as long as the Moon was not in the last 3°20'. The *D* of the fourth pada then continues into [Ashlesha](https://mahadasha.com/ashlesha-nakshatra) , which takes *Di*, *Du*, *De* and *Do*, so the whole stretch from 13°20' Cancer to 0° Leo is *D* territory.

## When Pushya is active in a chart

Every 27.3 days the Moon comes back to Pushya for roughly twenty-five hours.

Watch for it landing on a Thursday. Pushya plus Thursday is Guru Pushya Yoga, and jewellers in India still time their promotions to it. There are usually five or six of these in a year.

Saturn, the star lord, needs about thirteen months to cross the full 13°20', and it returns roughly every twenty-nine and a half years. Those long passages are the defining periods in a Pushya life: heavy, slow, and productive in a way that is only visible afterwards. Jupiter's five-month crossing every twelve years is the opposite and much easier, particularly through the first pada where it hits its own exaltation degree.

## Work that suits Pushya

Anything that feeds people, literally or otherwise. Food and agriculture, healthcare and nursing, teaching, social work, public administration, charity and religious institutions.

Saturn's rulership adds the unglamorous infrastructure roles that keep organisations alive: operations, compliance, facilities, logistics, and the long service career. Pushya is Kshipra, a swift nakshatra, and combined with its general auspiciousness this makes it the most widely recommended window in the calendar for starting a business, buying gold, or beginning study.

## Marriage, gana and compatibility

Pushya is Deva gana, Mesha yoni, Madhya nadi. The ram yoni is shared with [Krittika](https://mahadasha.com/krittika-nakshatra) , and its natural enemy is the monkey, which makes [Purva Ashadha](https://mahadasha.com/purva-ashadha-nakshatra) and [Shravana](https://mahadasha.com/shravana-nakshatra) worth a careful look.

### Which nakshatras actually match Pushya

Pushya is Deva gana with a ram yoni and Madhya nadi. Add Tara and that is 21 of the 36 settled without a birth time.

Pushya's best partners on those 21 are [Ashwini](https://mahadasha.com/ashwini-nakshatra) and [Punarvasu](https://mahadasha.com/punarvasu-nakshatra) , both at 18. All three are Deva gana, which scores the full six, and both partners sit in Adi nadi against Pushya's Madhya.

The weakest is [Dhanishta](https://mahadasha.com/dhanishta-nakshatra) at 2 of 21, where Deva against Rakshasa costs almost the whole gana block, the ram and the lion score nothing, and shared Madhya nadi removes eight more. Note the marriage caveat that applies to Pushya regardless of score: tradition avoids this nakshatra for the wedding itself, which is about the muhurat rather than the match. Pushya has no claim on the final 15; those belong to [Kundali matching](https://mahadasha.com/kundali-matching) .

## Reading Pushya for planets other than the Moon

Jupiter in the first pada is the headline: exalted by sign, at its exact exaltation degree, and in the nakshatra of its own deity. Nothing else in the zodiac stacks up quite like it. The Moon here is protective and steady, and it is one of the better Moon placements for family life.

Saturn in its own nakshatra is dutiful and slow-burning, and it usually indicates a long career in one institution. Mars in the fourth pada is formidable and defensive. Venus in Pushya is loyal rather than romantic. Mercury does well in the second pada, where Virgo navamsa gives it something precise to do. Rahu and Ketu both sit awkwardly, because this star runs on obligation and neither node recognises one.

## The difficult side of Pushya

Martyrdom, put plainly. The star gives without being asked, and giving without being asked builds an unspoken ledger that the other party never agreed to. Pushya natives are often genuinely surprised by how much resentment they turn out to be carrying.

The second issue is conservatism. Saturn plus Cancer produces a strong preference for the arrangement that already exists, and Pushya can defend a bad situation for years on the grounds that it is the situation. The remedy is neither Saturn's nor Jupiter's but the star's own: give what is actually wanted rather than what you have decided to provide.

Jupiter's exaltation degree sits in Pushya's opening quarter, so the first 3°20' reads unlike the other ten. ## Frequently asked questions

### Is Pushya Nakshatra the most auspicious nakshatra?

By near-universal agreement in the tradition, yes. It is the standard choice for beginning ventures, purchases and study, and Guru Pushya Yoga on a Thursday is one of the most prized windows in the calendar.

### Why is marriage avoided in Pushya Nakshatra?

Despite its general auspiciousness, tradition excludes Pushya for weddings, on the strength of a story about its presiding deity's own marriage. This is a rule about the ceremony's timing, not about whether a Pushya-born person marries well.

### Why is Pushya Nakshatra ruled by Saturn but linked to Jupiter?

Saturn is its Vimshottari lord and Brihaspati, meaning Jupiter, is its presiding deity. The two pull in different directions, which is the source of the star's characteristic mix of generosity and carefulness.

### What is special about Pushya Nakshatra pada 1?

Jupiter's deep exaltation degree, 5°00' Cancer, falls inside it. Any planet in the early part of that pada occupies the single strongest Jupiter degree in the zodiac, in a star whose deity is Jupiter.
