# Pearl Gemstone: The Water Trine and Why It Falls That Way

> Moti clears Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. That is the water trine, and it lands there for the same structural reason the ruby lands on fire: the Moon owns one sign.

A pearl gemstone, moti, is the Moon's stone, and the Moon shares a structural feature with the Sun that no other graha has: it owns a single sign. Cancer, and that is all.

One sign means one house per ascendant, which means the licensing question has a clean answer everywhere and never a contested one. It also means the licensed set has to be a trine, and for the Moon it is the water trine: **Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces**.

## Reading the three

Cancer rising puts Cancer on the 1st, so the Moon is the ascendant lord itself. Scorpio rising puts it on the 9th. Pisces rising puts it on the 5th. Trine lordship in all three, unqualified.

The reason is the same one that governs the ruby and it is worth stating once more because it is the tidiest piece of arithmetic in this cluster. Cancer is a water sign. Any water ascendant sees Cancer in the 1st, 5th or 9th, because those are precisely the houses that hold the other members of the ascendant's own element. The trine of the graha's own sign is the licensed set. It falls out of the definition of a trine and no measurement is involved.

## The three that should not

Leo, Sagittarius and Aquarius rising. For those the Moon rules the 12th, the 8th and the 6th, in that order, and rules nothing else at all.

Aquarius rising is the case worth dwelling on, because the Moon there owns the 6th house of illness, debts and conflict, and moti is prescribed for emotional steadiness more often than any other stone in the set. Someone asking for a calmer mind and being handed a stone that feeds their 6th lord is the exact failure mode this cluster exists to describe.

Leo rising is nearly as awkward. The Moon owns the 12th, and the 12th is the house of expenditure, isolation and sleep. There are readings where strengthening a 12th lord is deliberate and useful. Buying a pearl because a shop asked your birth month is not one of them.

## What the other six get

Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Virgo, Libra and Capricorn rising all put Cancer on the 4th, 3rd, 2nd, 11th, 10th or 7th. None of those is a trine and none is a dusthana, so the Moon there is neither licensed nor refused.

Cancer on the 4th, for Aries rising, is the interesting one of the six. The Moon is the natural significator of the mother and the 4th is the house of the mother, and there is a classical principle that a significator sitting in the house it signifies weakens that house rather than strengthening it. The stone question and the significator question pull in opposite directions there, which is a genuine judgement call rather than a rule.

## The Moon changes faster than any decision you make about it

Every other graha in this set moves slowly enough that a birth chart reading holds still. The Moon crosses a sign in about two and a quarter days and returns to its birth position every 27.3 days, which makes it the only graha with a monthly cycle you can feel.

None of that touches the licensing table, because lordship is fixed by your ascendant and the Moon's speed has nothing to do with it. It does affect everything else about the reading. A Moon that is waxing and bright is a different proposition from the same Moon at the dark of the month, and the distinction between waxing and bright is not the one most people assume: brightness runs on elongation from the Sun, so a waning Moon between the 5th and 7th houses from itself is brighter than any waxing one.

## How the three licensed signs stack up by frequency

Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are three ascendants of twelve, so the flat prediction is 25.00%. The real figure is close but the composition is odd: Scorpio rises 9.82% of the time at Delhi, the most common of all twelve, while Pisces rises 6.11%, the least common of all twelve. The pearl's licensed set contains both extremes.

Netted out across twelve thousand births, moti is licensed for 25.43% of people and refused for 24.93%. The two numbers sit either side of a quarter and they are supposed to, because the licensed and refused sets are both three signs and there is no reason for one to be systematically commoner than the other.

The refused set is the one to look at if you want a sense of scale. Leo, Sagittarius and Aquarius together account for roughly a quarter of everybody, and pearl is among the most commonly recommended stones in the Indian market. Those two facts do not sit comfortably next to each other.

## The Moon cannot be a yogakaraka either
