Measured against a real year, both are considerably smaller than the fear attached to them. # Panchak and Bhadra in Muhurat: What They Actually Cost Panchak and bhadra in muhurat are the two windows that disqualify a date regardless of how good its five limbs look. Every rule in this cluster is subject to them, which makes them worth measuring rather than merely fearing, and both turn out to be smaller and more specific than their reputations suggest. They are also completely unrelated to each other. Panchak is about where the Moon is. Bhadra is about the angle between the Moon and the Sun. The only thing they share is that both are treated as hard exclusions rather than as scored preferences. ## Panchak is exactly the Moon's last sixty degrees Panchak runs from the midpoint of Dhanishta to the end of Revati. Stated in degrees that is 300° to 360°, and 300° is exactly where Aquarius begins. So the classical definition and the modern shorthand are the same statement: Panchak is the Moon in Aquarius or Pisces, and nothing else. The seam is exact rather than approximate. Dhanishta spans 293°20' to 306°40', and half of 13°20' is 6°40', which puts its midpoint at precisely 300°00'. That is also the boundary between its second and third padas. The tradition's phrasing, the sign boundary and the pada boundary all land on the same degree, which is not something you can say about most rules in this subject. Five stars are touched: the back half of Dhanishta, then Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati. Five is what the name counts. ## How much of a year Panchak takes Two signs of twelve is a sixth, so you would predict 16.7 percent of any year. The classical list is short and specific: roofing a house, gathering fuel or wood, making a bed or cot, journeying south, and cremation. Five acts, which is presumably where some of the name's weight comes from. Buying property, entering a house, naming a child and starting a business are none of those. Most families avoid Panchak for everything anyway, and the cost of doing so is real but modest: across the twelve activities in this cluster it removes between three and fifteen days a year, depending on how much of each rule's star list falls in those last two signs. [Travel](https://mahadasha.com/travel-muhurat) already bars the south on Thursdays through disha shool, so a southward journey has two independent screens working against it and they do not coordinate. The practical effect is smaller than it sounds. Disha shool bars the south one day in seven, Panchak covers about one day in six, and the two are independent, so a southward journey loses roughly a quarter of the calendar to the pair of them rather than the sum you might fear. ## Bhadra is the seventh karana Bhadra is another name for Vishti, one of the eleven karanas. A karana is half a tithi, so a lunar month holds sixty of them, and the seven movable karanas each take eight of those sixty while the four fixed ones take one each. Seven times eight plus four is sixty exactly. So Vishti falls eight times in every lunar month, not once, and that is the first correction most people need. Measured across 2026 the count was 99 windows, averaging 11 hours 49 minutes and covering 13.4 percent of the year. Thirteen percent of every year is Bhadra. That is a great deal more than most people assume, and if it were all disqualifying it would be the single largest constraint in muhurat. It is not, and the reason is the rule almost nobody quotes. ## Two thirds of Bhadra is held harmless Bhadra is said to reside in one of three worlds depending on the Moon's sign at the time, and only one of the three obstructs anything. - Moon in Cancer, Leo, Aquarius or Pisces: Bhadra is on earth, and this is the kind that is actually observed. - Moon in Aries, Taurus, Gemini or Virgo: Bhadra is in heaven and is held harmless. - Moon in Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius or Capricorn: Bhadra is in the nether world, harmless for the same reason in the other direction. Four signs each, a clean split of the twelve. Measured across 2026's 99 windows the distribution was 33 on earth, 34 in heaven and 32 below, which is almost exactly the third the partition predicts. So the honest figure is that about 4.5 percent of a year is obstructing Bhadra, not 13.4. The reputation is built on all 99 windows; the rule was only ever about a third of them. ## Reading panchak and bhadra in muhurat without over-applying them The practical reading is straightforward. Check whether a candidate date falls in Panchak, and if it does, check whether what you are doing is on the short list of five prohibited acts. Check whether Bhadra is running at the hour you want, and if it is, check the Moon's sign before assuming it matters.
