# Nakshatra in Panchang: The Moon's Mansion for the Day

# Nakshatra in Panchang: The Moon's Mansion for the Day

Nakshatra in panchang is the arc of sky the Moon happens to be crossing at sunrise on the date you are looking at. The zodiac is cut into 27 arcs of 13°20' each, the Moon's longitude falls in one of them, and that one is the day's nakshatra. Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika and so on round to Revati.

The single most common confusion about this limb is worth clearing up in the first paragraph, because it sends people looking for the wrong thing. This is not your birth star. It is today's star, shared by everyone alive.

## Today's star, not your star

Your janma nakshatra is where the Moon sat at the moment you were born, and it never changes. It fixes which Vimshottari mahadasha your life opens in, it feeds compatibility scoring, and it belongs to you alone. The panchang nakshatra is where the Moon sits today, and it belongs to the day.

They intersect once every 27.3 days or so, when the transiting Moon comes back round to the arc you were born under. That return is your janma nakshatra day, and it is the one moment the two readings are talking about the same 13°20'. The rest of the time they are simply different questions. ## The limb that lasts longest

Of the four angular limbs, the nakshatra runs longest on average. Measured across 2026 against the site's ephemeris it averaged 24 hours 14 minutes, with a shortest of 20 hours 54 minutes and a longest of 27 hours 08 minutes.

The reason is that it is the only limb driven by the Moon alone. A tithi has to wait for the gap between Moon and Sun to open, and the Sun is moving away from it the whole time. A yoga is pushed forward by both bodies at once and turns over fastest. The nakshatra just tracks the Moon at its own pace, about 13.18° a day against a 13°20' arc, which works out at a whisker over one day.

The six-hour spread between the shortest and longest is the Moon's orbit showing through. Near perigee it covers more than 15° in a day and a nakshatra is gone in under 21 hours; near apogee it manages under 12° and the same arc takes more than 27. Everything else about this limb, including how long its windows run, inherits that variation, which is why so few numbers attached to a nakshatra are ever constant.

That whisker matters. Because the average is slightly more than 24 hours, the nakshatra tends to hold through a whole day and expire a little later each time, and occasionally a single nakshatra covers two sunrises. The opposite case, a nakshatra so short it is skipped entirely, is possible but much rarer than the equivalent for tithi.

## What nakshatra in panchang actually fixes

Three things in a panchang are computed from this limb and nothing else.

**Varjyam**, sometimes called Tyajya, is a window to be avoided. It is not a slice of the day at all: it is a slice of the *nakshatra*. Each of the 27 has its own starting point, expressed in ghatikas out of the 60 that make up that nakshatra's run, and the window lasts 4 ghatikas from there.

**Amrit Kaal** is the favourable counterpart, and it sits in a fixed relationship to Varjyam: it begins exactly 24 ghatikas later and also lasts 4. Two windows, same length, same origin, one offset from the other.

Because a ghatika here is a sixtieth of the nakshatra rather than a sixtieth of a day, both windows stretch and shrink with the nakshatra. A nakshatra running 20h 54m gives ghatikas of about 21 minutes and a window of about 84 minutes; one running 27h 08m gives ghatikas of about 27 minutes and a window of about 109. This is why Varjyam is never the same length twice, and why a calculator that prints a flat 96 minutes is not computing it.

The third thing is the tara bala count, which measures the day's star against a person's birth star, and is the one place where the two nakshatra readings meet deliberately.

## A worked day

On 5 August 2026 at Delhi the Moon was in Ashwini at sunrise, second pada, and Ashwini ran until 21:18:22. Ashwini's Varjyam starts at ghatika 50 of its 60, so late in its run, and the engine puts that window at 17:24 to 18:58 with Amrit Kaal following after the nakshatra has changed, at 02:46 the next morning.

Note what that means practically. The star was favourable most of the day, had a window worth avoiding in the early evening, and the good window had slipped past midnight into the following calendar date while still belonging, by sunrise reckoning, to Wednesday. This is a limb where reading only the name and ignoring the arithmetic gets you almost nothing.

## Padas, and the quarter you are given

Each nakshatra divides into four padas of 3°20', and a panchang reports which one the Moon is in. That number is not decoration. A pada is exactly one navamsa, the same 3°20' boundaries used by the D9 chart, with 108 of each around the zodiac. So the pada tells you which navamsa sign the Moon is occupying at the same time as it tells you where in the nakshatra it sits.

For daily use the pada mostly matters near the edges. A Moon in pada 4 is about to change nakshatra, and if you are timing something to a particular star, knowing you are in the last quarter is knowing you have hours rather than a day.

## The twenty-eighth star that is not in the list

There is a 28th nakshatra, and it exists for timing rather than for charts. Abhijit occupies 6°40' to 10°53'20" of Capricorn, which is not spare sky. It is carved out of two of the standard 27: the whole of Uttara Ashadha's fourth quarter plus the first 53 minutes of arc of Shravana.

That overlap is why it was dropped from the everyday scheme. Twenty-seven arcs of equal size divide the zodiac cleanly and the Vimshottari dasha cycle depends on that equality, so a 28th intruder that shares ground with two neighbours cannot be part of the same list. Worth knowing so that a reference to Abhijit does not send you looking for a 28th entry in the daily panchang, where it will never appear.

## Reading it alongside the rest

Traditional muhurat almost never uses the nakshatra alone. The standard combinations pair it with the vara, and the pairing is only meaningful because the two cycles have different lengths: 27 stars against 7 weekdays means a given combination comes round on a long cycle rather than weekly. Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga, the best known of these, is defined as specific star-and-weekday pairs, and the whole point is that they are uncommon.
