And on six of every ten of those days Mercury is also burnt, which changes the reading entirely. Mercury retrograde is the only astrological term that has escaped astrology. People who would not know their own rising sign will blame a late train on it. So it is worth establishing what actually happens, because the real numbers are more interesting than the folklore. Over the twentieth century, Mercury reversed 315 times in 100 years. That is 3.15 spells a year, one every 116.0 days, each lasting between 19.8 and 24.2 days with an average of 22.2. During each spell it walks back an average of 13.42 degrees, never less than 8.55 and never more than 16.31. That count is the check that the measurement is sound. One spell every 115.95 days recovers Mercury's synodic period, the published value for which is 115.88 days. The loop counter and the orbital mechanics agree to within a rounding error. ## Mercury retrograde and the tether that causes it Budha never gets far from the Sun. Its maximum elongation across 200 years was 27.79 degrees, which is why the classical description holds it to under 28. Nothing else in the sky is constrained like this except Venus, at 47.27. That tether is the whole mechanism. Mercury reverses when it swings between Earth and the Sun, and that is by definition the closest it ever comes to the Sun from our point of view. So the reversal and the burning are not two separate conditions that sometimes coincide. They are two views of the same passage. The number: on 60.52% of its reversed days, Mercury was also inside the combustion orb. In birth charts the figure lands at 60.35% to 60.94% depending on the sampling window, and 11.39% of all charts have a Mercury that is both reversed and burnt at once. In 2026 the stations fall like this, in Lahiri sidereal terms: - 26 February it turns retrograde, 21 March it turns direct - 29 June retrograde, 24 July direct - 24 October retrograde, 13 November direct Six station dates, three loops, roughly 66 days of the year in reverse. That works out at 18% of 2026, close to the long run figure of 19.15% of all days. Every fourth or fifth year gets four loops instead of three, when the drift lines up right. Reversed, the classical reading is that these turn inward and iterate. The person thinks before speaking, sometimes long before, and often arrives at a better answer by a slower route. Common expressions are a preference for writing over talking, an instinct to re-read and re-check, a mind that works well in editing and poorly under interrogation. In Shadbala terms, a reversed graha earns close to maximum cheshta bala, so this is a loud Mercury rather than a weak one. What it is not is a quick one. The house matters more than the motion. A reversed Mercury in the 3rd, its natural home, reads very differently from the same reversal in the 12th. The cause is that Mercury's orbit is the most eccentric of the classical seven. Its distance from the Sun varies by nearly half between closest and furthest approach, and it moves faster when it is closer. A retrograde loop that occurs while Mercury is near its closest point runs fast and short and covers a wider arc, up to 16.31 degrees. One that occurs at the far end runs slow and long and covers as little as 8.55. So the shortest loops trace the longest paths, which is the opposite of what intuition suggests. Nothing in the interpretive tradition hangs on this, but it does mean that any rule of thumb quoting a fixed number of days for Mercury retrograde is quoting an average and calling it a fact. ## Mercury reversed alongside other planets Mercury pairs with Saturn in 6.74% of charts and with Jupiter in 5.92%, the second and third commonest reversed pairs after Jupiter with Saturn. Neither pairing means anything by itself, since both partners are reversed a large share of the time and the overlap is what you would expect from two independent conditions. What does mean something is Mercury reversed while conjunct the Sun, because that is one configuration rather than two. A reversed Mercury inside that conjunction is the commonest form the yoga takes and the one most often read too optimistically. ## The part about signing contracts The popular advice is to avoid signing anything during a Mercury retrograde. Take that seriously for a moment and work out what it implies. Mercury is reversed on roughly 19% of days, and the advice applies to everybody at once, which means it asks about a fifth of all commercial activity to stop for reasons unconnected to any individual chart. The classical muhurat tradition does not work that way. It selects a moment for a specific person and a specific act, using the tithi, the nakshatra, the weekday and the ascendant. Mercury's direction is one input among many, and for most acts it is not among the important ones. Where it does have a defensible role is in acts Mercury specifically governs: contracts, publishing, shipping, anything whose substance is a document. Even there the honest framing is that the period suits revision better than launch, which is a reason to schedule a review rather than a reason to postpone a life. ## Reading a natal Mercury retrograde by house The reversal changes the flavour of Mercury's expression, not the department it works in. That department is set by the house. Three placements where the combination is worth naming: - In the 3rd, Mercury's own natural ground, a reversal usually reads as someone whose written output is far stronger than their spoken output, and who is uncomfortable being asked to think out loud. - In the 10th, it often shows up as a career built on correcting other people's work rather than producing first drafts, which is a real and well paid thing to be. - In the 12th, the internalising tendency doubles up with a house that already hides what it holds, and the usual expression is a mind that runs constantly and reports almost none of it. None of these are verdicts. They are the shape the modifier tends to take, and the placement page carries the substance. If the reversal is also inside the Sun's orb, which it will be about three times in five, read that first, since a burnt Mercury restricts expression in a way that a merely reversed one does not. ## Frequently asked questions about Mercury retrograde ### How long does Mercury retrograde last? Between 19.8 and 24.2 days, averaging 22.2 across 315 measured spells. The variation comes from Mercury's eccentric orbit, so a loop near its closest approach to the Sun runs shorter than one at the far end. ### Is Mercury retrograde in a birth chart a problem? It appears in 18.88% of charts, so roughly one reader in five has it. The classical reading gives a reversed graha high motional strength, and treats the significations as internalised and repeated rather than damaged. Check whether it is also combust, since 60% of the time it is, and that condition is the one that actually restricts expression. ### Why does Mercury go retrograde so much more often than Mars?
