When a condition is that common, the interesting question stops being whether you have it and becomes how close the planet actually sits. Mercury combustion appears in 42.97% of birth charts. No other planetary condition in this subject comes close to that frequency, which makes it simultaneously the most diagnosed and the least informative thing anyone will ever tell you about your chart. The cause is not mysterious. Mercury orbits inside Earth's path and never travels far from the Sun in our sky, so a large share of its life is spent inside anybody's burning orb. Its maximum separation across two centuries is set out on the [Mercury retrograde page](https://mahadasha.com/mercury-retrograde) , and it is under 28 degrees. The orb is 14. Roughly half the available room is burnt territory. ## Mercury combustion depends on which orb you use Most tables give Mercury 14 degrees. Many narrow it to 12 when Mercury is retrograde, on the reasoning that a reversed Mercury is at its closest to Earth and therefore unusually bright, so it survives nearer the glare. We measured what that adjustment costs. Across 73,049 days, a flat 14 degree rule called Mercury combust on 43.49% of them. The retrograde aware rule, narrowing to 12 during reversals, called it on 41.03%. The difference is 1,798 days out of 73,049, or about two and a half percentage points. Two and a half points sounds small until you notice where those days land. Every one of them is a chart where Mercury is reversed and sitting between 12 and 14 degrees from the Sun, which is exactly the marginal zone where a reader most needs a defensible answer. The adjustment does not change many charts. It changes the difficult ones. This is why the honest way to state the condition is with the separation attached rather than as a yes or no. Mercury at 2 degrees from the Sun and Mercury at 13 are both combust on the common table, and they are not remotely the same situation. ## Budhaditya Yoga and Mercury combustion are the same configuration Here is the collision that most readings quietly avoid. Budhaditya Yoga forms when the Sun and Mercury are conjunct, and it is one of the most cheerfully quoted combinations in the tradition, read as a mark of intelligence, articulacy and quick judgement. Mercury combustion is what happens when Mercury gets close to the Sun, and it is read as the planet losing its ability to deliver its own results. These describe the same sky. The Sun and Mercury share a sign in about 51% of all charts, and Mercury is inside the burning orb in about 43%. There is no way to have a strong Budhaditya conjunction without also having a Mercury under considerable solar pressure, because closeness is the definition of both. The resolution most careful texts adopt is to require Mercury to be conjunct but outside the burning orb for the yoga to give its stated results, which leaves the strict version of Budhaditya as a small minority of the charts commonly credited with it. The short version is that a yoga and an affliction defined by the same geometry cannot both be claimed at full strength. ## What a burnt Budha actually does Mercury governs speech, calculation, commerce, documentation, learning and the nervous system. It is the graha of the working mind: how you process, how you explain, how you negotiate. Burnt, the classical reading is that these functions run in service of the identity rather than independently of it. The common expression is a mind that is genuinely capable but has difficulty being objective about its own owner. Thinking works well on external problems and less well on self assessment. Explanation tends to become advocacy. A second and quieter pattern is about credit. The burnt planet does the work and the Sun takes the recognition, which in a chart often means the person's intellectual contribution gets absorbed into their general presence rather than being noticed as a distinct skill. People describe them as impressive without being able to say what they are good at. The house sets the field. In Shadbala terms nothing here is a strength penalty, which is worth repeating: combustion and weakness are separate axes, and a burnt Mercury in its own sign is a strong planet with a visibility problem. ## Read the separation, not the flag Given that nearly half of all charts carry this, the flag itself tells you almost nothing. What tells you something is the number behind it. Under 3 degrees is a serious fusion, and it is where the classical descriptions actually bite. The planet is inside the Sun's immediate field and functionally inseparable from the identity. Between 3 and 8 degrees is the ordinary case, and it reads as the mild version described above. Between 8 and 14 is marginal, and a fair number of traditions would decline to call it burnt at all. Those three bands describe three different charts and one word. So when a report says your Mercury is combust, the useful follow up is how far, and if the answer is not available the claim is not checkable. That is a long stretch to run a chart through a single planet's condition. The most legible window inside it is the Sun's sub period. Vimshottari allocates each antardasha in proportion to its own mahadasha length, so the Sun gets 6 parts of 120 inside Mercury's 17 years, which works out at about 10 months. During those ten months the chart is running the burnt planet inside the burning one, and if the fusion described above is going to show itself, that is when. The mirror window is the same length by construction. Mercury's sub period inside a Sun mahadasha gets 17 parts of 120 across 6 years, which is also about 10 months. Two ten month windows, decades apart, both operating the same conjunction from opposite ends. On 60% of its reversed days Mercury is also burnt, and about 11% of all charts carry both at once. The two do not reinforce each other. Reversal turns the significations inward and gives them extra iteration; burning removes their independent visibility. A Mercury that is both is a mind that works constantly, privately, and gets almost none of the credit.
