Here is the measured figure, why the wrong one persists, and what Mars actually does in the three houses it is welcome in. Mars transit effects come with a number attached that is simply wrong. You will read that Mars spends 45 days in a sign in almost every reference, including in this site's own older calculator copy until recently. Measured against Swiss Ephemeris across 1900 to 2060, the figure is 57.26 days. That is a 27 percent error, and it is enough to put a predicted Mars transit into the wrong month. Where does 45 come from? Probably from Mars at speed. Mars near opposition to the Sun moves fast, and a fast stretch really can cross a sign in about 45 days. But every fast stretch is paid for by a slow one, and Mars near conjunction with the Sun crawls. Averaging is the whole point of a quoted duration, and 45 is not the average of anything. ## The three houses where Mars transit effects are welcome From your natal Moon, Mars gives its result in the 3rd, 6th and 11th and nowhere else. Three of twelve, the most restrictive list in the system, shared only with Saturn and the nodes. Those three are the upachaya houses, the ones held to improve under pressure. The tradition's position on Mars is not that it is bad. It is that Mars applies force, and there are exactly three places where force is the right answer: against an obstacle, against an opponent, and towards a goal. The 3rd absorbs 37 percent of it and the 6th 35 percent, while the 11th takes 28. So of the three good Mars transits, the one in the 11th is the one most likely to actually arrive, and the two that sound most like classic Mars territory are the two most often cancelled. There is a reason for that shape, and it is geometric rather than astrological. The 3rd and the 6th are blocked from the 12th and the 9th, three houses away in each case. The 11th is blocked from the 5th, which is directly opposite. Blocking houses close to the transiting planet fire more often than distant ones, because the Sun, Mercury and Venus travel as a group and a group occupies neighbouring houses. The planet of action is doing something useful for about a sixth of your life. ## The three houses Mars reaches without being in them Mars has something none of the other planets in this cluster does, and it changes how a Mars transit should be read. Every planet aspects the house opposite it, the 7th from wherever it stands. Mars additionally aspects the 4th and the 8th from itself. So transiting Mars in your 3rd is not only working on the 3rd. It is also throwing its aspect on your 6th, your 9th and your 10th. Four houses under Mars influence at once, from a single placement.
