# Mars Combustion: The Widest Orb, and Why Mars Needs It

> Seventeen degrees, wider than any other body gets, and the reason is that Mars near the Sun is the faintest thing on the list rather than the most important.

Mars combustion runs on a 17 degree orb, the widest given to any body in the standard table, and it appears in 15.36% of birth charts. About one in six and a half.

The width of that orb gets misread constantly. It is not a statement that Mars matters more, or that its burning is more serious. It is a statement about how faint Mars is when this happens, and once you see why, the rest of the reading follows.

## Why Mars combustion needs so much room

Mars is only near the Sun in our sky when it is on the far side of its orbit, which is also the far side of the Sun from us. At that point it is roughly 2.5 times as far away as it is at its closest, its disc is tiny, and its brightness has dropped by a factor of several dozen from what it reaches at its best.

So the Mars that approaches the Sun is the dimmest Mars there is. It disappears into the glare early and stays lost for a long time, and the 17 degree orb is an honest attempt to describe how much sky it takes to lose it.

Compare that with Venus at 10 degrees, which is bright enough to be spotted in daylight. The orbs are ranked by faintness rather than by significance, and Mars leads the table because it is the easiest of the five to lose.

## Every burnt Mars is a distant, forward moving Mars

There is only one kind of Mars combustion, and this makes it simpler to read than the inner planets.

Mars can never be burnt while reversed. Not rarely: never, across 73,049 days of daily positions, because an outer planet only reverses when Earth passes between it and the Sun, which puts it as far from the Sun in our sky as it can get. The consequence is that a combust Mars in any chart is a Mars moving forward at close to full speed, on the far side of the Sun, at its greatest distance from Earth. If you have a mental picture of a combust planet as one bearing down on us and being overwhelmed, invert it. It is retreating.

## What a burnt Mangal does in a chart

Mars governs initiative, force, courage, competition, the willingness to do the unpleasant necessary thing, and by extension brothers, land, tools and surgery. It is the graha that acts.

Burnt, the classical reading is that the force is absorbed into the identity rather than deployed independently of it. The pattern that shows up most often is assertion that is really self assertion: energy that comes out reliably when the person's standing is involved and much less reliably when it is not.

A second and more sympathetic version of the same thing is a person who finds it difficult to act on their own behalf without feeling that the act defines them. The stakes get raised on every small confrontation, because the identity is riding on it. That is a specific and recognisable thing, and it is a long way from the vague damage the word combustion implies.

## The Sun and Mars are natural friends, which changes the tone

This is where a combust Mars differs from a combust Venus or Saturn, and it is a classical point rather than an astronomical one.

In the natural friendship scheme, the Sun counts Mars among its friends, and Mars returns the compliment. So a Sun and Mars conjunction is a comfortable pairing on its own terms, two planets that share an appetite for direct action and visible results, sitting together.

The burning is therefore the only unfavourable element in the configuration, rather than one unfavourable element stacked on another. In practice this reads as a combustion with the sharp edges filed off: the fusion of force and identity happens, but it happens between two bodies that want similar things, so it produces intensity rather than friction.

That is a genuine distinction and it is worth applying. A combust Mars and a combust Saturn are not the same event with different planets attached. One is a friendly conjunction with a visibility problem. The other is a conjunction between two bodies that the tradition treats as adversaries.

## Ruchaka Yoga with a burnt Mars

Ruchaka Yoga forms when Mars sits in its own sign or exaltation in an angular house, and it is one of the five Panchamahapurusha yogas.

The yoga's definition is positional, so motion does not affect it. Combustion is a different matter. Most careful texts hold that a yoga forming planet must be capable of delivering its own results, and combustion is precisely the condition that removes that capacity, so a burnt Mars is widely held to compromise the yoga it forms.

That collision is not rare. It happens whenever the Sun joins Mars in the sign that produced the yoga, which for a Mars in Aries in the 1st house means any birth with the Sun in Aries and rising in Aries. The honest reading is that the two claims have to be weighed rather than one automatically cancelling the other, and that the separation in degrees is what decides it. A Mars 15 degrees from the Sun on a 17 degree orb is a marginal burning and a full yoga. A Mars 2 degrees away is the reverse. ## Burnt against debilitated, which are not the same thing

Mars is debilitated in Cancer, and readers regularly treat debility and combustion as two names for the same misfortune. They are separate axes and they measure different things.

Debility is about sign: Mars in Cancer is a planet working in a medium that does not suit it, whatever else is going on. Combustion is about proximity to the Sun and says nothing about the sign at all. A Mars can be exalted in Capricorn and burnt at the same time, which produces a strong planet nobody can see working, and it can be debilitated in Cancer with no Sun anywhere near it.

The two do coincide, but only when the Sun is in or beside Cancer, which is a specific and checkable condition rather than a general risk. Keeping the axes separate is the difference between a reading that describes a chart and one that stacks adjectives.
