A test that fires on half the population needs its cancellations taken as seriously as its rules. # Manglik Matching Rules: Houses, Cancellations and Real Cases Manglik matching rules sit outside the thirty-six Gunas entirely. Mangal dosha is not one of the eight kootas, it contributes no points, and a Guna Milan score of thirty can belong to a pairing where one partner is Manglik and the other is not. People are regularly surprised by this, because the two examinations are usually reported together. It is also the single most over-applied rule in Vedic matching, and the arithmetic shows why. ## Which houses make a chart Manglik Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the ascendant is the widely used list. Six houses out of twelve, which means Mangal dosha is present in roughly half of all charts on the ascendant criterion alone, before anyone checks the Moon or Venus as well. A rule that fires on half the population is not identifying a rare defect, and any framework that treats it as one will reject an enormous number of workable matches. The list is also less arbitrary than it looks, and understanding why makes the exceptions easier to judge. Four of the six houses reach the seventh house directly: Mars in the 7th occupies it, Mars in the 1st aspects it fully, Mars in the 4th reaches it by its special fourth aspect, and Mars in the 12th reaches it by its special eighth aspect. The remaining two are counted from the seventh rather than from the ascendant. The 2nd house is the eighth from the seventh, which touches the spouse's longevity, and the 8th house is the second from the seventh, a maraka position for the partner. The 2nd house is the genuinely disputed one. Parashara's basis is the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th, and the 2nd is a later addition that not every school accepts. If a match is being decided on a Mars in the 2nd house, that is worth saying out loud. ## From the ascendant, the Moon, or Venus The dosha is conventionally checked from three reference points: the ascendant, the Moon and Venus. A chart Manglik from all three is more strongly so than one Manglik from a single point, and the partial case is often called anshik or partial Manglik. This is where most disagreement between reports comes from. One will report Manglik because Mars sits in the 7th from the Moon, another will report clear because it is not from the ascendant. Neither is wrong; they are applying different reference points. Before accepting either verdict, find out which point produced it. ## Manglik matching rules for cancellation Several cancellations are classical, and they are specific. **Both partners Manglik.** The most widely accepted rule of all: where both charts carry the dosha, it is treated as neutralised. This is the reason Manglik matching is usually reported as a pairing question rather than an individual one. **Mars in its own sign or exalted.** Mars in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn is treated as far less afflicting, because a dignified Mars is not the same planet as a distressed one. Those are also exactly the three positions that form Ruchaka Yoga when Mars sits in a kendra, so the same placement that triggers the dosha on a kendra house can be its own cancellation. **Mercury signs in the 2nd.** Where the dosha comes from the disputed second house, Mars in Gemini or Virgo there is commonly held to cancel it, which covers Taurus and Leo ascendants. **Age.** Several traditions hold that the dosha weakens substantially after about twenty-eight, which is the age at which Mars is traditionally said to mature. **Aspect or conjunction from Jupiter.** Benefic influence on Mars, particularly from Jupiter, is treated as mitigating across most schools. ## Reading a mixed pairing honestly The difficult case is one Manglik and one not, with no cancellation available. Here the useful move is to stop asking whether the label applies and start reading what Mars is actually doing. Look at the sign and dignity of Mars, what aspects it, and which houses it rules for that ascendant. Mars is yogakaraka for Cancer and Leo ascendants, owning a kendra and a trikona in both, and a yogakaraka Mars in the 7th house is a different proposition from a debilitated Mars in the same place. The claim is about strain, discord and in the harsher readings the health of the partner. What the sources do not say is that a Manglik person is dangerous, or that such a marriage is doomed. That framing is modern, and it does real harm to people who arrive having been told they carry something shameful. Mars in the seventh describes a marriage with heat in it, which is a description a great many couples would recognise and few would call a catastrophe.
