# Magha Nakshatra: All Four Padas, Lord and Meaning

> Magha Nakshatra is Regulus, the royal throne, ruled by Ketu with the ancestors as its deity. Its four padas, its Ketu dasha, and the inheritance it asks you to carry.

# Magha Nakshatra: All Four Padas, Lord and Meaning

Magha Nakshatra occupies the first 13°20' of Leo and is ruled by Ketu. Its deities are the Pitris, the ancestral fathers, and its symbol is a royal throne. In the sky it is Regulus, the heart of the Lion, one of the four royal stars of Persian astronomy and among the brightest in the northern sky.

The name means the mighty, or the bountiful. This is the star of inherited position.

## The throne, and who sat in it before you

A throne is the one piece of furniture in the world that is older than whoever is sitting in it and will outlast them too, which means that occupying it says a great deal about your position and very little about you. That is the distinction Magha keeps making. The authority is real. Nobody in it earned it.

The Pitris are the ancestors as a collective, honoured in the shraddha rites and fed by their descendants. In the Vedic conception the dead are not gone, and they are not passive: they have claims, they confer standing, and they can be displeased. Magha is the point in the zodiac where the family line speaks.

People born here usually carry something. A surname that opens doors or closes them, a family business, a reputation, a debt, a tradition, an expectation set before they were born. They tend to be dignified, and conscious of hierarchy in a way their peers are not. Either deeply loyal to where they came from, or in permanent revolt against it. Rarely anything in between.

All four padas sit in Leo, so the Sun is the rashi lord while Ketu rules the star. The Sun is the king and Ketu is the graha that renounces. A throne, and a planet with no interest in sitting on it.

## Beginning on a knot

Magha opens at 0° Leo, immediately after Cancer ends, and that junction is a gandanta. The last pada of [Ashlesha](https://mahadasha.com/ashlesha-nakshatra) sits on the water side and Magha's first pada sits on the fire side.

Three of these seams exist in the zodiac and the Cancer to Leo crossing is the middle one. What it marks in practice is a break in continuity, which is a peculiar thing to find at the start of the ancestral nakshatra. The star whose whole subject is inheritance begins at the one point where nothing is handed across.

That tension is worth sitting with rather than resolving. Magha natives frequently inherit a great deal and also find that the one thing they actually needed never made it down the line.

A full cupboard. The wrong key.

## All four Magha Nakshatra padas in detail

The padas run Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer.

### Pada 1: 0°00' to 3°20' Leo, Aries navamsa

Mars takes the navamsa, and this is the gandanta pada. Syllable *Ma*.

Fire on fire on fire. The most forceful quarter of Magha and the one most likely to seize a position rather than wait for it. It produces commanders, founders and people who fight their families. Sitting on the gandanta, it also carries the sharpest version of the star's disinheritance theme: authority claimed rather than received.

### Pada 2: 3°20' to 6°40' Leo, Taurus navamsa

Venus takes the navamsa. Syllable *Mi*.

The wealthiest quarter, and the one most comfortable with what it inherited. Land, property, family firms, luxury, and the arts. This pada holds on to things. It is the least rebellious of the four and the most likely to spend a working life extending something that already existed.

### Pada 3: 6°40' to 10°00' Leo, Gemini navamsa

Mercury takes the navamsa. Syllable *Mu*.

Authority expressed through speech. Politics, law, teaching, broadcasting, and the family historian who actually knows the stories. This is the most articulate quarter and the most modern in outlook, often the one that translates an inherited position into a public one.

### Pada 4: 10°00' to 13°20' Leo, Cancer navamsa

The Moon takes the navamsa. Syllable *Me*.

The most emotional and most dutiful quarter. Water navamsa under a fire sign turns the ancestral theme into genuine devotion: the person who keeps the rites, hosts the family, looks after the elderly parent. It is the gentlest pada of Magha and the one that feels the weight of the lineage most personally.

## Seven years of Ketu at the start

A Moon in Magha opens life in [Ketu Mahadasha](https://mahadasha.com/ketu-mahadasha) , seven years, shared with [Ashwini](https://mahadasha.com/ashwini-nakshatra) and [Mula](https://mahadasha.com/mula-nakshatra) . Those three are the only nakshatras that begin a life on Ketu.

Ketu strips. Opening on it, in the nakshatra of the ancestors, quite often coincides with a loss in the family during early childhood, or a separation from the place the family came from. The pattern recurs often enough in Magha charts that it is worth asking about.

Check your own balance with the [dasha calculator](https://mahadasha.com/dasha-calculator) .

## The syllables Magha gives a child

Magha's four are *Ma*, *Mi*, *Mu* and *Me*, and the set continues into [Purva Phalguni](https://mahadasha.com/purva-phalguni-nakshatra) , which takes *Mo* in its first pada before switching to *T*.

Five consecutive *M* syllables across two nakshatras means the whole stretch from 0° to 16°40' Leo produces *M* names, which is the longest single-consonant run in the zodiac. If a family knows only that the Moon was somewhere in early Leo, an *M* name is safe without any further precision.

## When Magha is active in a chart

The Moon needs 27.3 days to return to Magha, and lingers a day when it does.

Ketu, the star lord, moves backwards and takes roughly eight months to cross the full arc, returning about once every eighteen years. Those passages tend to coincide with the ancestral themes surfacing: an inheritance settled, a family rupture, a return to a place the family left.

The Sun crosses in about thirteen days each August, and its passage over Regulus is one of the more storied moments in the astronomical year across several traditions. Jupiter's five-month crossing every twelve years is the one that most often converts an inherited position into an earned one.

## Work that suits Magha

Anything involving position and continuity. Government and civil service, law and the judiciary, family business, institutional leadership, heritage and archives, genealogy, and the priesthood in its traditional role of maintaining rites.

The Sun's rashi rulership adds administration, ceremony and public office, while Ketu's involvement points at history, archaeology and anything that studies what is already finished. Magha is Ugra, a fierce nakshatra, so muhurat practice keeps it for demolition, confrontation and the ending of things rather than for beginnings.

## Marriage, gana and compatibility

Magha is Rakshasa gana, Mooshaka yoni, Antya nadi. The rat yoni is shared with [Purva Phalguni](https://mahadasha.com/purva-phalguni-nakshatra) next door, and its natural enemy is the cat, which makes [Ashlesha](https://mahadasha.com/ashlesha-nakshatra) and [Punarvasu](https://mahadasha.com/punarvasu-nakshatra) worth checking.

### Which nakshatras actually match Magha

Magha's share of the fixed portion: Tara 3, the rat yoni 4, Rakshasa gana 6, Antya nadi 8. Twenty-one of thirty-six.

Magha's best partner on those 21 is [Jyeshtha](https://mahadasha.com/jyeshtha-nakshatra) at 19. Both are Rakshasa gana, scoring the full six, Jyeshtha's Adi nadi against Magha's Antya protects all eight nadi points, and the rat and the deer sit comfortably together.

The weakest are [Rohini](https://mahadasha.com/rohini-nakshatra) and [Uttara Ashadha](https://mahadasha.com/uttara-ashadha-nakshatra) , both at 1 of 21. In each case shared Antya nadi removes eight points and Rakshasa against a gentler gana removes most of the remaining six. Fifteen points still hang on the two Moon signs; [Kundali matching](https://mahadasha.com/kundali-matching) settles those.

## Reading Magha for planets other than the Moon

The Sun in Magha is regal and rigid, and it usually describes a father who was the family's central fact. Ketu in its own nakshatra is the placement that most clearly marks a break in the line, sometimes a renunciation of everything the family stood for.

Jupiter here confers genuine standing and works well in the second and third padas. Venus in the second pada is one of the more comfortable placements in the star. Saturn in Magha is heavy: duty to the family taken as a life sentence. Mars in the first pada, on the gandanta, is combustible and often marks the family rebel. Mercury in the third is politically astute.

## The difficult side of Magha

Entitlement is the obvious risk and it is real, though it is usually less crude than it sounds. The subtler version is an assumption that the order of things is the correct order of things, which makes Magha slow to notice when a hierarchy has stopped deserving loyalty.

The deeper difficulty is the one the star is named for. Living up to an inheritance is not the same as living, and a Magha life can be spent entirely in relation to people who are no longer here. The traditional response is to honour the Pitris properly, which is not sentimentality: the rites exist so the obligation has a place to be discharged rather than carried indefinitely.

Magha opens on a gandanta and closes in Cancer navamsa, a wide range for 13°20'. Fix your quarter in the [birth chart calculator](https://mahadasha.com/birth-chart-calculator) ; the [27-nakshatra guide](https://mahadasha.com/27-nakshatras-in-vedic-astrology) covers the wider set.

A note on the Ketu opening that Magha shares with only two other stars. Seven years is short enough that most people have no clear memory of it and long enough that it sets the shape of everything after. In the nakshatra of the ancestors, that is a peculiar way to begin.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Magha Nakshatra Regulus?

Yes. Magha is Regulus, Alpha Leonis, the heart of the Lion, and one of the four royal stars in the Persian tradition. It sits very close to the ecliptic, which is why it is occulted by the Moon.

### Why is Magha Nakshatra connected to ancestors?

Its presiding deities are the Pitris, the ancestral fathers honoured in shraddha rites. The nakshatra governs what is inherited rather than earned: name, position, obligation and family karma.

### Does Magha Nakshatra have a gandanta?

Its first pada does. Magha begins at 0° Leo, immediately after Cancer ends, and that water-to-fire seam is one of three gandanta junctions in the zodiac.

### Is Magha Nakshatra good for marriage?

It matches best with other Rakshasa gana stars, since that pairing scores full marks while Rakshasa with Deva scores almost nothing. Antya nadi rules out the other eight Antya nakshatras for the eight-point block, and the rat yoni conflicts with cat partners.
