# Loan and Investment Muhurat: The Rule That Runs Backwards

> Every other rule in this cluster gives one answer. This one gives two opposite answers depending on which side of the transaction you are standing on.

# Loan and Investment Muhurat: The Rule That Runs Backwards

Every other muhurat in this cluster answers one question: when should this begin. A loan and investment muhurat answers two, and they have opposite answers, because money going out and money coming in are not the same event seen from different sides. They are different events.

The rule is stated as a single sentence and it is the most quotable thing in the whole subject. Money you want to grow goes out on a waxing Moon. Money you want to shrink goes out on a waning one. That is the whole inversion, and everything else here is detail.

## Loan and investment muhurat, and which way the money is moving

An investment is money you are sending out in the hope it comes back larger. A loan you are giving is the same. Both belong to the bright fortnight, Shukla paksha, when the Moon is filling. The correspondence is not subtle and it is not meant to be.

A loan you are taking is money you want to be rid of. So is a repayment, and so is clearing a credit balance or closing an account. All of those belong to the dark fortnight, Krishna paksha, when the Moon is emptying.

Which means one person's excellent day is the other person's wrong one, at the same transaction. A bank disbursing a loan and a borrower receiving it are on opposite sides of the rule. In practice the borrower is the one who consults an astrologer and the bank is not, so the borrower's reading governs, but it is worth knowing that the rule was written for a world where lending was personal and both parties might have asked.

## What 2026 left, split both ways

The classes are Dhruva the fixed and Kshipra the swift, with Punarvasu and Shravana admitted by name. Nine stars: Ashwini, Rohini, Punarvasu, Pushya, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana and Uttara Bhadrapada.

Fixed because money should stay put. Swift because a transaction should complete. Punarvasu is admitted because its name means return, which for a loan is the entire point, and Shravana because it carries a long association with agreements heard and accepted.

Screened against 2026 at Delhi, those nine stars leave 124 days. The weekday rule, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday only, brings it to 52. The tithi rule brings it to 33.

Now the split, which is the number worth carrying away. Of those 33 days, 11 fall in the bright fortnight and 22 in the dark. So there are twice as many good days to borrow on as there are to lend or invest on, which is the opposite of what most people assume when they hear that a waxing Moon is the auspicious one.

## Why the split is not even

A lunar month has fifteen tithis in each fortnight, so at first glance the two should come out equal. They do not, and the reason is the tithi screen rather than anything about the Moon.

The rejected tithis are the rikta group, the eighth, the new Moon and the full Moon. Amavasya and Purnima sit at the ends of the two fortnights, one in each, so those cancel. But the interaction between which stars fall in which fortnight in a given year is not symmetric, and in 2026 it happened to favour the dark fortnight by two to one.

That is a fact about 2026 rather than a law. It is worth stating precisely because it is the sort of number that gets repeated as a principle once someone has written it down, and it is not one. Run the same screen against a different year and the split will differ.

## Mercury, Jupiter, Venus

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Mercury governs contracts and calculation, Jupiter governs wealth and its increase, and Venus governs the money itself.

Among the three, Thursday is preferred for investment and for lending, since Jupiter is the graha of expansion. Friday is preferred for anything involving a purchase with borrowed money. Wednesday suits the paperwork specifically, which matters more than it sounds: a loan agreement signed on a Wednesday and drawn down on a Thursday satisfies both preferences, and there is no rule saying the two moments have to be the same day.

Saturday is the firmest exclusion here. Saturn signifies debt, delay and things that do not get repaid, and no school recommends a Saturday for a financial beginning of any kind.

## A fixed sign at the transfer

Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius rising at the moment the money moves. Taurus is the strongest, being the natural second house of the zodiac and so the sign of accumulated wealth, and Venus rules it.

Two houses are read at that minute. The second governs what you hold and the eleventh governs what comes in, so both should be clean and ideally aspected by a benefic. The sixth is the house of debt, and for a loan being taken a strong sixth is not the disaster it sounds like: the house of debt is also the house of overcoming it. For an investment, a malefic in the second is the placement most practitioners would move the appointment for.

The general reading of what the second and eleventh carry is covered in [Jupiter's twelve placements](https://mahadasha.com/jupiter-in-different-houses) , since Jupiter is the natural significator of wealth in both.

## Which acts the rule actually covers

The classical framing is narrower than the modern reading of it. The texts discuss lending at interest, the deposit of wealth with another party, and the purchase of what they call permanent assets, meaning land, cattle and gold. They say nothing about instruments that did not exist.

The extension to modern investment is a reasonable one and is universally made, but it is an extension. Where it is doing the most work is with anything whose value moves daily, since the tradition has no category for an asset you can sell within the hour and no view about when to do so.

What the rule handles cleanly is the moment of committing capital you do not intend to move for a while, which maps onto the classical deposit well enough. What it handles badly is trading. Anyone applying a muhurat to a same-day transaction has moved a long way past what the sources support, and it is worth saying so rather than letting the rule appear to cover more ground than it does. [Venus across the twelve houses](https://mahadasha.com/venus-in-different-houses) covers the natal side of how someone holds and spends money, which is the question the muhurat cannot answer.

## Salaries, SIPs and things that repeat

A monthly investment plan cannot be timed, because it recurs on a date the provider sets. The workable convention is to time the first instalment, since that is the beginning and the rest are continuations, and this is consistent with how the rest of this subject treats recurring acts.

The same reasoning applies to a loan repaid in instalments. The drawdown is the moment that carries the muhurat. Individual repayments are not separately timed, and a family that tries to will find the bank's own schedule wins.

## Checking a date

The [Muhurat Calculator](https://mahadasha.com/muhurat-calculator) screens financial dates for your city. Decide which direction the money is going before you look, because the answer genuinely differs, and check [which paksha a date falls in](https://mahadasha.com/tithi-in-panchang) rather than assuming a bright fortnight is better. For this one activity it depends on which side you are standing.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Why does a loan and investment muhurat reverse?

Because lending and borrowing are opposite acts. Money you want to grow goes out on a waxing Moon; money you want to be rid of goes out on a waning one. No other rule in this cluster inverts like that.

### How many qualifying days did 2026 have?

Thirty-three at Delhi by star, weekday and tithi, of which 11 fell in the bright fortnight and 22 in the dark. That split is particular to 2026 and is not a general ratio.

### How do you time a recurring investment?

Time the first instalment. The rest are continuations of a thing that has already begun, and the provider sets their dates anyway.

### Why is Saturday excluded?

Saturn signifies debt, delay and what does not come back, which is a poor set of significations to attach to money changing hands. It is the firmest weekday exclusion in this particular rule, firmer even than the general avoidance of Tuesday that runs through most of the others.
