# Ketu Mantra: 17,000 Repetitions Against Seven Years

> The steepest ratio in the whole remedial table: nearly as many repetitions as Rahu asks, against a period less than half as long.

The Ketu mantra asks for 17,000 repetitions. Ketu runs a seven year mahadasha, the joint shortest of the nine alongside Mars. Put those together and you get the most lopsided pairing in the entire remedial table.

Seventeen thousand is 157 whole malas with 44 beads left over. Over a forty day mandala that is 3.94 malas a day, about 17.7 minutes.

## The steepest rate of the nine

Divide the count by the period and Ketu asks 2,429 repetitions per year of dasha. Mercury, at the other end, asks 529. The ratio between them is 4.59.

Look at the pair Ketu and Rahu make. Rahu asks 18,000 against 18 years; Ketu asks 17,000 against 7. Nearly the same count, periods differing by a factor of two and a half. If the counts were set by period, the two nodes would be the easiest place to see it and they are the clearest place it fails.

Set against Mars, which shares the same seven year period, Ketu asks 17,000 where Mars asks 10,000. Same length of period, seventy per cent more repetitions.

## No weekday, no hora, and the same gap Rahu has

Ketu owns no sign, so the lordship test that licenses seven of the nine stones cannot run on it. It owns no hora either, so it has no weekday of its own, and the whole "chant in the graha's own hora on its own day" instruction has nothing to attach to.

Cat's eye and hessonite are both handed a Saturday in our gemstone table, each borrowing it from Saturn for want of a day of their own. Their finger, metal and weight entries match as well. When two of nine rows agree on every field, the likeliest explanation is that one was copied outward from the other.

The mantra has none of that difficulty. Propitiation was never conditional on ownership, so nothing is being improvised here.

## The one instrument that reaches Ketu by rule

The rudraksha numbering does something the stone system cannot. For the first nine mukhis the bead number is simply the graha's position in the navagraha order: 1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Mars, 4 Mercury, 5 Jupiter, 6 Venus, 7 Saturn, 8 Rahu, 9 Ketu. No exceptions and no interpretation.

An ordinal does not require ownership, which is why the sequence reaches Ketu cleanly at position nine while the gemstone framework has nothing to say. ## Ketu is exactly six houses from Rahu, always

The two nodes are the points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic, and they are always precisely 180 degrees apart. In whole-sign terms that puts Ketu exactly six houses from Rahu in every chart ever cast.

Which means the axis is one piece of information rather than two. Knowing where Rahu sits gives you Ketu for nothing, and any reading that treats them as independent placements has counted the same fact twice.

The node axis is also what drives  [Kaal Sarp](https://mahadasha.com/kaal-sarp-dosha) , the configuration where every other graha falls on one side of it. That is a statement about occupancy rather than ownership, which is the kind of statement the nodes support.

## The significator problem, in its sharpest form

Ketu is the moksha karaka, the significator of release, detachment and endings. It stands for what a person is finished with rather than what they are pursuing.

Now consider what a strengthening remedy does. It asks a graha to do more of what it already does. Asking Ketu to do more is asking for more detachment, which is a coherent request for a renunciate and a strange one for somebody who arrived worried about their career or their marriage.

Propitiation asks for something different: a smoother relationship rather than a louder graha. For Ketu that distinction is not a technicality, it is the difference between asking for less friction and asking for more renunciation. It is the clearest case in the wave where the two kinds of remedy would take a reader to opposite places.

## Ketu's transit, and what moves slowly enough to plan around

The node axis takes about eighteen months to cross a sign, which makes it one of the slower moving things in a chart and one of the few whose transit is worth planning around at all.

Measured over a long window, Rahu influences a given house roughly 8.2 times per 75 years, averaging 566 days per visit, and Ketu's figures are the same by construction since the two move together. Compare Jupiter at 25.1 visits of 435 days and Saturn at 10.5 of 982, and the nodes sit between the two in frequency.

The direct-motion point applies to Ketu as much as to Rahu: the true node runs direct on 26.2% of days despite the standard claim that the nodes never do, and the mean node never does. Two sources computing different nodes will disagree about ingress dates by up to a month and both will be defensible. ## When a Ketu period is running

Seven of the 120 years, and it arrives once in the cycle if it arrives at all. Ketu's antardasha within its own mahadasha is the shortest sub-period the system produces at that level, since each antardasha takes the same share of its mahadasha that the lord's own period takes of 120.

The nodes together hold 20.83% of the cycle, and measured across 12,000 births at a random age between 0 and 75, one of them was the running lord 22.43% of the time. So a node period is a common thing to be inside, not a rarity.

## The two beads that carry no graha at all

One more consequence of the bead numbering, since it is the system that treats the nodes best. Fourteen mukhis, and twelve of them carry a graha across nine grahas, so three grahas must appear twice however a seller's list is arranged. In the common attribution those three are the Sun, Venus and Saturn.

The other two beads, the 10 mukhi and the 11 mukhi, carry no planet whatsoever. They are named for Vishnu and for the eleven Rudras respectively, and no planetary recommendation can honestly cover them.

Keep that in mind when a shop describes a bead as being for a particular planet. For nine of the fourteen the mapping is an ordinal and is not really in dispute. For three it is a repeat, and for two there is no planet in the answer at all.

## The mantra and the items

The beej form is ॐ स्रां स्रीं स्रौं सः केतवे नमः, Om Sram Sreem Sraum Sah Ketave Namah. The associated deity in the common attribution is Ganesha, and the traditional daan items are sesame, a multicoloured cloth, blankets, and food for stray dogs.

None of it carries an ascendant test. That is not leniency, it is a structural fact: there was never a lordship rule for the nodes to fail.

### Which weekday should I use?

There is none to use. Seven grahas own planetary hours and that is why the week has seven days; the nodes are outside that count entirely. Saturday gets lent to Ketu by convention, exactly as it gets lent to the stone.

### Is this preferable to wearing cat's eye?

On grounds of evidence, yes. No ascendant licenses or refuses lehsunia, because Ketu owns no sign and the lordship test cannot run. The mantra never depended on lordship, so nothing is missing from its basis.
