# Kemadruma Yoga: The Dreaded One, in 44% of Charts

> The most alarming description in popular astrology attaches to the commonest configuration of the Moon. Four rules divide every chart, and this is the largest of the four.

Kemadruma yoga is defined by absence. If no planet occupies the house immediately before the Moon or the house immediately after it, the chart is said to carry Kemadruma, and the descriptions attached to it are the bleakest in popular astrology: poverty, isolation, instability, a life of struggle.

It is present in 44.48% of the sample. Not quite half of everybody. Any description that fits that many people is describing the human condition rather than a chart.

## The four rules that divide every chart

Kemadruma is not a standalone rule. It is one of four outcomes of a single question: what sits in the 2nd and 12th houses from the Moon? There are exactly four answers and every chart gets one of them.

Those four add to 100.00%, and they have to, because there is no fifth case. That is a useful property: it means the figures cannot be quietly wrong in the way a single isolated statistic can be. It also means Kemadruma is not an affliction that befalls a chart. It is the default outcome, and the other three are the exceptions.

## Which planets count, and the mistake that is easy to make

The Sun does not count, and neither do Rahu and Ketu. Only the five planets from Mars to Saturn can prevent Kemadruma by flanking the Moon.

Excluding the Sun is not arbitrary. The Moon's relationship to the Sun is already described by an entirely separate scheme, the waxing and waning cycle, and counting the Sun here would mean the same relationship was being measured twice by two rules that disagree about what it means.

This detail is also where implementations go wrong. While researching this cluster we audited the yoga detector behind this site's free chart analysis and found its Kemadruma check counting the Sun, while the Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhara checks twenty lines below in the same file correctly excluded it. The file disagreed with itself about the same two houses, which meant a chart with only the Sun beside the Moon was denied Kemadruma by one rule and denied Sunapha by the other. It is fixed.

## Why so many charts have it

Five candidate planets, two target houses, twelve houses in the chart. If the five were spread evenly and independently, the chance that none of them lands in either of the two houses beside the Moon is ten twelfths raised to the fifth power, which is about 40%. Measured, 44.48%.

The measured figure is a little higher than the independent estimate because planets are not independent: Mercury and Venus cluster near the Sun, so they tend to occupy the same regions as each other rather than spreading out. Whichever way you calculate it, a Moon with empty neighbours is the ordinary case.

## Compare that with the Sun's version

The same scheme exists for the Sun, where the equivalents are Vesi, Vasi and Ubhayachari. Between them they cover 89.14% of charts, which leaves only 10.86% with nothing beside the Sun.

Ten point nine per cent against forty four point five. The gap is not a difference in the rules, which are structurally identical. It is that Mercury never gets more than twenty eight degrees from the Sun and Venus never more than forty eight, so two of the five candidate planets are physically tied to the neighbourhood of the Sun. Nothing whatsoever is tied to the Moon.

This is the clearest illustration in the cluster of a general point: several classical rules are describing solar system geometry, and the ones that look like statements about your character sometimes turn out to be statements about orbital mechanics.

## Using the four rules as a diagnostic instead

Because the four outcomes partition every chart, the scheme works better as a description of the Moon's support than as a verdict. Read as a scale rather than as a pass or fail, it says something reasonable.

Durudhara, at 10.55%, is the Moon with support on both sides, and it is the least common outcome. Sunapha and Anapha, at 22.23% and 22.74%, describe support from one direction: the 2nd from the Moon leaning toward self made resources and the 12th toward what is inherited or released. Kemadruma is the absence of both, and it is the outcome nearly half of everybody gets.

Framed that way the scheme is informative and unalarming, which is what the numbers support. The alternative framing, where one of the four outcomes is a curse and the other three are blessings, requires believing that 44.48% of people are cursed.

The Moon's own condition is the more useful question in any case, and it is a separate one. A waxing Moon in Taurus with nothing beside it is a stronger Moon than a nearly new Moon in Scorpio with two planets flanking it, and the yoga scheme cannot see the difference. ## The cancellations, which are extensive

Classical sources list a long set of conditions that undo Kemadruma, and they are why the alarming descriptions rarely apply. The commonly cited ones are the Moon in a kendra from the ascendant, any planet in a kendra from the Moon, the Moon conjunct or aspected by a benefic, and the Moon in its own sign or exaltation.

Those conditions are individually common and they overlap. A chart with Kemadruma and none of them present is a genuinely lonely Moon; a chart with Kemadruma and two of them is a technical result with very little behind it. Notice that one of the cancellations, a planet in a kendra from the Moon, is exactly the condition that produces  [Gaja Kesari yoga](https://mahadasha.com/gaja-kesari-yoga)  when the planet is Jupiter. A chart can therefore hold both at once, which sounds contradictory and is simply what the two rules say.

## What an uncancelled version actually describes

Stripped of the melodrama, the configuration says the Moon has no immediate support. The mind works without a buffer on either side, which tends to read as self reliance that was not chosen, a tendency to process things alone, and a pattern of ups and downs that other people find hard to see coming.

The financial reading in the classical texts is best understood through the same lens rather than literally. An unsupported Moon is associated with irregularity rather than poverty, and irregular income in a subsistence economy meant something considerably harsher than it does now.

One last note on the vocabulary. Some sources call this a dosha rather than a yoga, which is a fair description of the intent and a misleading one about the frequency. A dosha implies something has gone wrong with a chart. What the measurements show is the ordinary arrangement of five planets across twelve houses, and the two houses either side of the Moon are simply not a large enough target for anything to hit reliably.

## Frequently asked questions on kemadruma yoga

### How serious is kemadruma yoga?

Much less serious than its reputation. It is present in 44.48% of charts, it is the default outcome rather than an affliction, and the classical cancellation list is long enough that a large share of those instances are undone by something else in the chart.

### Does the Sun beside the Moon prevent it?

No. The Sun, Rahu and Ketu are all excluded from the count, so only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn can prevent it. Some software gets this wrong and includes the Sun, which under-reports the configuration.

### Can a chart have both Kemadruma and Gaja Kesari?

Yes, and it is not a contradiction. Kemadruma looks at the two houses beside the Moon; Gaja Kesari looks at whether Jupiter is in a kendra from it. Jupiter in the 4th, 7th or 10th from the Moon satisfies the second while leaving the first intact.

### What cancels it?

The commonly cited conditions are the Moon in a kendra from the ascendant, any planet in a kendra from the Moon, a benefic conjunct or aspecting the Moon, and the Moon in Cancer or Taurus. These overlap, so charts with the configuration and no cancellation at all are considerably less common than 44.48%.
