Nothing else in the sky repeats itself this precisely. Jupiter retrograde is the most repeatable event in this whole subject, and the numbers are almost suspiciously tidy. Across the twentieth century Guru reversed 92 times, one spell every 397.0 days. Each spell lasted between 117.5 and 123.8 days. During each one it walked back between 9.84 and 10.07 degrees. Read that last range again. Ninety two separate reversals across a hundred years, and the distance covered varied by 0.23 degrees. Jupiter goes back ten degrees, then it stops, then it goes forward again. It has been doing exactly that for as long as anyone has been watching. At birth it turns up in 29.87% to 30.80% of charts depending on the sampling window, so roughly three readers in ten have a reversed Jupiter. It is the second commonest of the five. ## Why Jupiter retrograde repeats itself so precisely The arc of a retrograde loop depends on how fast Earth overtakes the other planet and how far away the other planet is when it happens. For Mars both of those swing wildly from cycle to cycle. For Jupiter neither does. Jupiter's orbit is close to circular, so its distance from us at opposition changes only modestly, and its own motion is slow and steady enough that Earth's overtaking speed is nearly the same every time. Two stable inputs give one stable output. The spell length reflects the same thing. A range of 117.5 to 123.8 days is a spread of 6.3 days across a century, against Mars at 21 days. Jupiter is the planet you can set a calendar by, which is presumably part of why the tradition made it the graha of law and settled principle. ## The gap is slightly longer than a year, and that matters 397.0 days is a year plus about a month. The practical consequence is that Jupiter's reversal creeps steadily later through the calendar, arriving roughly a month further along each time, so it takes about twelve cycles to work all the way around the year. 2026 shows the awkward version of this. Jupiter turns direct on 11 March and retrograde again on 13 December, in Lahiri sidereal terms. Both stations belong to loops that lie mostly outside the year: the first ends a reversal that began in 2025, the second starts one that finishes in 2027. The calendar year contains two stations and no complete loop. That is worth knowing if you are reading a transit calendar rather than a chart, because a year can look busy with Jupiter stations and contain very little actual reversed time, or the other way round. A sign is 30 degrees. So the loops land almost exactly one sign apart, year after year, drifting three degrees deeper into each successive sign as they go. This is the same arithmetic behind the familiar fact that Jupiter changes sign roughly once a year, seen from the other end. If you know which sign Jupiter reversed in last time, you know which sign it will reverse in next time, and you will be right nearly every time. It also means a Jupiter reversal returns to the sign it started in after about twelve cycles, which is close enough to a human decade for the same house of your chart to catch a reversal once every twelve years or so. For most people that works out at six or seven encounters in a lifetime with a Jupiter reversal in any given house. Frequent enough to notice a pattern, rare enough that most people never do. ## Jupiter is the least burnt of the five Across 73,049 days, Jupiter sat inside the combustion orb on 7.27% of them, the lowest figure of any of the five reversible planets. Two things produce that. Its orb is 11 degrees, narrower than everything except Venus at 10, and the Sun sweeps past it quickly because Jupiter itself barely moves, so each conjunction is over in a few weeks. And a reversed Jupiter is never a burnt one. Not once in two centuries of days. Jupiter reverses only when Earth passes between it and the Sun, which puts it opposite the Sun in our sky, and the closest it ever came to the Sun while reversed was 114.01 degrees. That is a hundred degrees outside the widest orb anyone uses. So the two conditions describe different charts, never the same one. It is the graha of the person other people ask. Reversed, the classical reading is that the expansion runs inward. Growth happens in depth rather than in breadth. The common expression is someone whose knowledge in one area is much deeper than their range is wide, and who is noticeably uncomfortable holding forth on anything they have not personally tested. A recurring pattern with a reversed Guru is a difficult relationship with being taught, in a chart that is otherwise clearly about teaching. The person often ends up in the guru seat without ever having been an easy student. Whether that reads as integrity or as stubbornness depends on the rest of the chart, and mostly on the 9th house. Rahu is a calculated point rather than a body, and in the mean node scheme this site uses it is retrograde on 100.00% of days without exception. So every Guru Chandal conjunction already involves one body moving backwards. When Jupiter is reversed too, which happens in about three of these charts in ten given how often Jupiter reverses, both partners in the conjunction are travelling the same wrong way at once. The traditional reading of the combination is that Rahu distorts Jupiter's judgement, producing conviction without the grounding that usually earns it. The doubly reversed version tends to intensify the inward turn rather than the distortion: belief built entirely from private evidence, defended fiercely, and revised only by the person who holds it. If a reading tells you that a reversed Jupiter means delayed marriage, blocked education or an obstructed guru, ask what it is meant to be explaining, given that it is true of a third of every room you have ever been in. The useful reading works the other way round. Establish what Jupiter is doing in the chart first: which houses it owns, where it sits, whether it aspects anything that matters, what condition it is in by sign. Then add the reversal as a modifier on the manner of delivery. It is a real signal and a small one, and it gets its weight from the placement underneath it rather than from itself.
