# How Accurate Is Vedic Astrology Software? A Measured Answer

How accurate is Vedic astrology software is really two questions wearing one coat. The astronomy is exact: planetary longitudes come from a numerical model fitted to spacecraft tracking and are good to a thousandth of an arcsecond, far past anything an interpretation could use. The astrology is a different matter, because turning an exact longitude into a sign, a house and a period requires three choices, and reasonable people have been making them differently for centuries.

This post measures the cost of each choice on six thousand randomly generated births, so the answer is a set of percentages rather than a reassurance.

## The setting that moves a third of all charts

The sidereal zodiac has to start somewhere, and the offset from the tropical zodiac is called the ayanamsa. It grows by about 50.28 arcseconds a year, which is precession and not a modelling decision. Where it stands today, however, depends entirely on which system you asked for.

This engine supports nineteen distinct ones. On 6 August 2026 they run like this: Surya Siddhanta 21.2666 degrees, Raman 22.7823, Yukteshwar 22.8503, J.N. Bhasin 23.1337, Krishnamurti 24.1318, Lahiri 24.2286, Fagan-Bradley 25.1118, and the galactic-centre value 27.2271. Only 7 of the 19 sit within a degree of Lahiri.

The gap between Lahiri and Raman, the two most used in India, is 86.8 arcminutes. Switching between them across the sample produces this:

- 31.35 percent of charts have at least one planet in a different sign
- 10.42 percent have the Moon in a different nakshatra
- 43.17 percent have the Moon in a different pada
- 4.93 percent have a different rising sign
- 10.42 percent start a different mahadasha, and when the starting lord does survive, the timeline still slides by 17.2 months on average

Those figures are not mysterious once you see the arithmetic. A gap of 1.4463 degrees against a 30-degree sign moves a uniformly placed body across a boundary 4.8 percent of the time; against a 3.33-degree  [pada](https://mahadasha.com/27-nakshatras-in-vedic-astrology)  it does so 43.4 percent of the time. The measurement came out at 43.17. Prediction and count agree, which is how you know neither is a typo.

Krishnamurti sits only 5.8 arcminutes from Lahiri and the same table collapses to 2.57 percent and 3.07 percent. The disagreement is proportional to the gap, so an argument about ayanamsa is an argument about arcminutes, not about competence.

## The bigger version of the same problem

If you have ever been told your real sign is one back from the one you grew up with, this is why. The whole ayanamsa is currently 24.23 degrees, four fifths of a sign, so on the same sample the sidereal Sun sits in a different sign from the tropical Sun in 79.28 percent of charts. The Moon differs 78.70 percent of the time and the ascendant 79.38 percent.

Four people in five. That is not a defect in either system. It is what happens when two traditions measure from different starting points and both keep doing so for two thousand years.

## Half of every chart depends on a second choice

The second choice is quieter and larger. Once you have an ascendant you still have to decide what a house is. This site uses whole sign, where the ascendant's entire sign is the first house, which is the older Indian convention. Cusp-based systems put the ascendant degree itself at the start of the first house and divide from there.

Measured at Delhi, 52.60 percent of planetary placements land in a different house under Placidus cusps than under whole sign, and 90.9 percent of charts have at least one planet that moves. At London the figure rises to 58.85 percent, because cusp systems distort more as latitude increases.

Half of all placements. Any statement of the form my Saturn is in the eighth house is therefore incomplete without saying which system produced it, and the only clean fix is to show both. ## A third choice, smaller but real

Rahu and Ketu are not bodies, they are intersection points, and there are two defensible ways to compute them. The true node follows the real oscillation of the lunar orbit and occasionally moves direct. The mean node is the smoothed version and never does.

They differ by 0.966 degrees on average, up to 1.935 degrees, which puts Rahu in a different sign in 3.08 percent of charts and a different nakshatra in 6.80 percent. Small, but not zero, and it is the reason two sources can date the same Rahu ingress a month apart and both be right.

## Where the software is not the weak link

All of the above assumes the input is correct. Usually it is not, and the error is in the birth time rather than in the code.

An error of one minute changes the rising sign in 0.80 percent of cases, the navamsa lagna in 7.18 percent and the KP sub-lord in 17.50 percent. At ten minutes the navamsa is wrong 75.30 percent of the time. At an hour the tenth divisional chart, the one every career reading is built on, disagrees 91.02 percent of the time, and pure chance across twelve signs would disagree 91.67 percent of the time. No amount of ephemeris precision helps with that, which is why  [rectification](https://mahadasha.com/how-birth-time-rectification-works)  exists as a separate discipline.

## One failure worth confessing

Precision has its own hazards. Swiss Ephemeris keeps the sidereal mode in process-global state: you set an ayanamsa and every later call uses it. On a web server handling concurrent requests, one request that set a different ayanamsa silently re-based every chart computed after it. This site shipped that bug, and it was found serving charts on Fagan-Bradley with a mahadasha 14 months out of place.

The fix was to make every read pass its ayanamsa explicitly inside a scope, and there are tests that fail if a new code path forgets. It is mentioned here because a post about accuracy that only lists other people's problems is not worth reading, and because this particular failure produces no error message at all. It just quietly answers a different question than the one asked.

## How accurate is Vedic astrology software, added up

Put the four together and the position is clear enough. The sky is settled. The zodiac offset is a school of thought worth about a third of a chart. The house boundaries are a second school worth about half of the placements. The birth time is usually the largest single source of error and it is not the software's fault.

Notice what that ordering implies. Arguing about which app has the better engine is arguing about the one part nobody disagrees on, while the three things that actually move planets around go unmentioned. If two readings of your chart conflict, the odds strongly favour a settings difference over a bug.

Which means the useful question is not whether software is accurate but whether it tells you which conventions it used. ## Frequently asked questions about accuracy

### How accurate is Vedic astrology software compared with a manual chart?

Far more accurate, and the gap is not close. Hand calculation from printed tables introduces interpolation error in the Moon of several arcminutes, which is enough to shift a pada. Software removes that entirely. What it cannot remove is the choice of ayanamsa, which the manual astrologer also had to make.

### Which ayanamsa should I use?

Lahiri is the official Indian value and the default here, so if you have no reason to prefer another it is the one your other readings will match. Consistency matters more than the argument: mixing Lahiri dasha dates with a Raman chart is worse than either choice alone.

### My Rahu sits in a different sign on another site. Which is right?

True node against mean node, almost always. They sit within about two degrees of each other and disagree about the sign in roughly three percent of charts.

### Does a more precise ephemeris give better predictions?

No. The precision available already exceeds what any interpretive rule can use by several orders of magnitude. The limiting factors are the conventions and the birth time, and neither improves when the ephemeris does.
