For two of the eight that qualify, the same Jupiter that forms the yoga also carries a classical caution. Hamsa yoga is Jupiter in Sagittarius, Pisces or Cancer, occupying a kendra. It is the Jupiter member of the Panch Mahapurusha group, named for the swan, and it turned up in 8.18% of the sample. Jupiter is the natural benefic of the seven, the karaka for wisdom, teachers, children and expansion, and a Jupiter that is both dignified and angular is about as unambiguous a strength as a chart offers. The interesting part of this combination is not what it promises but which charts can hold it and what else comes attached. ## The fixed ascendants are excluded Jupiter's qualifying signs are Sagittarius and Pisces, both dual, and Cancer, which is cardinal. A sign sits in a kendra only for ascendants sharing its modality, so the fixed ascendants have no route to this combination at all. Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius rising cannot form Hamsa yoga under any arrangement. The other eight can: the four dual ascendants through Sagittarius or Pisces, and the four cardinal ones through Cancer, where Jupiter is exalted. That split repays a second look. For a cardinal ascendant the only route is the exaltation, so any Hamsa in an Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn chart is necessarily an exalted Jupiter. For a dual ascendant the route is an own sign instead. The two versions are not equivalent and most descriptions do not distinguish them. ## The caution that arrives with it Mercury and Jupiter own all four dual signs between them. On a dual ascendant, that means one of the two always ends up owning two kendras at once, which classical sources call Kendradhipati and treat as a liability specifically for a natural benefic. Work it through. Sagittarius rising gives Jupiter the 1st and the 4th. Pisces rising gives it the 1st and the 10th. Gemini rising gives it the 7th and the 10th, and Virgo rising the 4th and the 7th. In every one of those four charts Jupiter owns two angles. So for the four dual ascendants, the planet forming the most celebrated benefic combination in the group is the same planet carrying the Kendradhipati caution. Sources that treat that caution as serious and sources that treat it as minor will read the identical chart very differently, and knowing which one you are reading matters. The four dual ascendants each have two, both through signs Jupiter owns. That is the clean split mentioned above, and it means a Hamsa in an Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn chart is guaranteed to be an exalted Jupiter, while a Hamsa in a Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces chart never is. ## What this combination is not Two other Jupiter conditions get confused with it often enough to be worth separating. Guru Chandal is Jupiter with Rahu, and it is a difficulty rather than a strength. A chart can hold both at once if Rahu happens to sit in the same angular sign, which produces a dignified Jupiter under nodal pressure. The rule for this yoga does not look at conjunctions, so it will report the combination as present without comment. The other is simple exaltation. Jupiter exalted in Cancer anywhere in the chart is a strong Jupiter, but it only forms this combination if Cancer also happens to be one of your angles, which requires a cardinal ascendant. Exalted Jupiter in the 5th house of a Pisces chart is a fine placement and it is not Hamsa. ## Where Jupiter is strongest by direction Jupiter takes its directional strength in the 1st house, which it shares with Mercury. That is worth pairing with the yoga, because among the four kendras the 1st is the one where Jupiter is doing two things at once: forming the combination and sitting in the house that gives it maximum directional weight. A Sagittarius or Pisces ascendant with Jupiter in the 1st therefore stacks three separate advantages: own sign, kendra, and directional strength. That is the strongest form the combination takes, and it is available to exactly two of the twelve ascendants. ## What weakens a technically present version - **Combustion.** Jupiter within eleven degrees of the Sun is burnt. The orb is narrower than most planets get, but Jupiter has no tether to the Sun, so when it happens it is a genuine coincidence rather than a structural likelihood. - **The navamsa.** Jupiter strong in the birth chart and weak in the D9 is the standard case of a combination that reads better than it performs. Gaja Kesari appeared in 33.17% of charts against this one's 8.18%, which makes Hamsa the narrower claim by a factor of four. Where they overlap the reading is straightforward: Jupiter is dignified, angular from the ascendant, and angular from the Moon. Where a chart has Gaja Kesari alone, the yoga is describing a relationship rather than a strength, and Jupiter's own condition still has to be checked separately. ## How many people have more than one of the five Since the five combinations are independent of each other, a chart can hold several. The distribution is steeper than most descriptions suggest. - None of the five: 66.70% of charts - Exactly one: 29.01% - Two: 4.12% - Three: 0.16% - Four: 0.01% No chart in the sample carried all five, and that is not a sampling accident. Holding four or five at once requires several planets simultaneously in specific signs and specific angles, and the modality constraint fights it: Bhadra needs a dual ascendant while Ruchaka and Shasha are impossible for one, so no chart can ever hold all three of those together. This is the point where the word rare becomes usable. One of the five is a one in three event. Two is a one in twenty four event.
