You are entering a house you intend to stay in. The Muhurta tradition sorts nakshatras into seven classes, one of which is called Dhruva, meaning fixed or immovable. The rule takes that class. There is no leap between the requirement and the filter; they are the same idea said twice. The fixed class holds four stars: Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha and Uttara Bhadrapada. Three of the four begin with Uttara, the later half of a paired star, which is the tradition's own way of marking the settled member of each pair. The soft class is added on top, bringing Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha and Revati, and Pushya and Hasta are admitted by name. Ten stars in all. ## Griha pravesh muhurat and the weekday screen Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the four days whose lords are the gentle grahas. Thursday carries the most weight, since Jupiter signifies both expansion and the household deity, and a Thursday entry falling on a fixed nakshatra is the cleanest form this rule takes. Tuesday and Saturday are excluded outright. Sunday is excluded in most practice, though a minority admit it for a first entry into a newly built house as distinct from a return after renovation. Where the sources split like that, the conservative reading is to treat Sunday as unavailable and lose nothing, since four weekdays already leave enough. ## What 2026 leaves Ten stars and four weekdays, screened against the real limbs at sunrise across 2026 at Delhi, leave 53 days. That is five more than a wedding gets from the same star count and the same weekday count, which looks odd until you check the third screen. The difference is entirely in the tithis. Both rules throw out the rikta group and the eighth and the new Moon. A wedding then throws out two more, the sixth and the full Moon, and those two extra exclusions a fortnight are worth five days across a year. That is the whole of the gap. Of the 53, nine fall inside Panchak and six have Bhadra running at sunrise. Thirty-nine days are clear of both, which is a little over one a fortnight averaged across the year, though they do not arrive evenly. ## A fixed sign at the door The rising sign at the moment of entry should be fixed as well: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius. The three modalities divide the twelve signs four and four and four, and each modality holds exactly one sign of each element, so asking for a fixed ascendant does not quietly force you into a particular element as well. A fixed sign rises for roughly two hours and one is available every day, so this condition never removes a date. It tells you which part of a qualifying day to walk through the door, and that is usually the detail families are most surprised by, because it can point at an hour nobody would have picked. ## What the ceremony itself is timed to Griha pravesh is not a single instant. There is the entry, the lighting of the first fire in the kitchen, and in many families the boiling over of milk. The convention is that the ascendant condition governs the entry and the rest follows within the same muhurta rather than being timed separately. The one exception is the kitchen fire, which some traditions place under a separate condition: the Moon should not be in the eighth from the ascendant at that moment. Apurva is the first entry into a newly built house and takes the full rule as stated above. Sapurva is a return to a house you already owned and had left, and it relaxes the month restrictions while keeping the star and weekday screens. Dwandwa is entry after repair or rebuilding, and it is the most lenient of the three, usually needing only that the day be clear of the rikta tithis and of Bhadra. Most confusion about griha pravesh dates comes from applying the Apurva rule to a Dwandwa case. If you have repainted a flat you have lived in for six years, you are not looking for one of 53 days. You are looking for a day that is not obviously bad, and there are a great many more of those. ## Months and the adhika trap The strong lunar months for house entry are Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha. Ashadha, Bhadrapada, Ashwin and Pausha are avoided. These are lunar months and they drift against the Gregorian calendar by about a fortnight, which is the commonest error in online muhurat tables: they test the English month number and then label it with a Sanskrit name, so their Chaitra is April and their Magha is February, neither of which is true for more than a few days. An adhika masa rules out its whole month. In 2026 that is Adhika Jyeshtha, 17 May to 15 June, easy to be caught by because the base month is one of the four strong ones. The prefix is doing all the work. ## Conditions the panchang cannot check Two rules belong to griha pravesh and to nothing else in this cluster. The first is that the house should be complete: doors hung, roof finished, water running. Entering an unfinished house is held to fix its unfinished state, and no choice of star repairs that. The second is orientation, which is a Vastu question rather than a panchang one, and where the two disciplines pull against each other the usual resolution is that Vastu governs the building and muhurat governs the moment. Neither overrules the other. Starting from 365: - The star screen leaves 134 days. Ten stars of twenty-seven, and the Moon passes each about thirteen times a year. - The weekday screen brings it to 80. Four days of seven from 134 predicts about 77, so the star cycle and the weekday cycle are close to independent, which they should be: 27 and 7 share no factor. - The tithi screen brings it to 53. That is the sharpest of the three cuts relative to what it starts from. - Panchak and Bhadra take it to 39. Relaxing the tithi preference recovers the most days for the least cost, because in most schools the rikta tithis are a preference for house entry rather than a prohibition. Relaxing the weekday rule recovers fewer and costs more.
