# Gemstones in Vedic Astrology: Which Three of the Nine Are Yours

> A stone feeds one planet, so it points somewhere, and a direction can be wrong. Work the rule out properly and every stone comes out licensed for three ascendants and refused by three.

Gemstones in Vedic astrology get written about as though the only question were which one suits you best. There is a prior question, and it is the one that actually has a fixed answer: is this stone allowed to come near your chart at all?

Here is why that question exists. A gemstone is a strengthening remedy. It feeds one graha and nothing else. That makes it directional, and anything directional can point the wrong way. Whether it points the wrong way for you depends on which houses that graha owns in your chart, and house ownership is decided by your rising sign and by nothing else in the sky.

So the whole thing collapses to arithmetic. Twelve ascendants, nine stones, one hundred and eight cells, all of them determined. We worked the table out, and the shape of it is stranger than we expected.

## Every stone is licensed for exactly three ascendants

Take the seven grahas that own signs. For each one, count the ascendants where it owns a trine, the 1st, 5th or 9th, without also owning one of the difficult houses, the 6th, 8th or 12th. That is the classical test for a stone being safe.

Every single one of the seven comes out at three. Three ascendants licensed, three refused, no exceptions and no near misses.

That is not a quirk of the data. There are three trines and three difficult houses, and rotating the ascendant through twelve positions walks a graha's houses through all twelve possibilities exactly once. The split is forced by counting. Nobody chose it.

Add up the licensed column and you get twenty one cells out of a hundred and eight. Divide by twelve ascendants and the average person is cleared for **1.75 of the nine stones**. The same arithmetic gives 1.75 stones actively refused. For every stone the rule opens to you, there is precisely one it shuts.

Nobody comes out with zero. We checked that specifically, because a rule that left some people with nothing would be a broken rule rather than a strict one. Pisces rising is the only ascendant cleared for three stones. Aries, Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are cleared for exactly one each, and if you rise in one of those four, the honest summary of the entire gemstone industry as it applies to you is a single stone.

## The Sun and the Moon give the rule away

Two of the nine grahas own only one sign, and their licensed sets are suspiciously tidy. The Sun clears Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. The Moon clears Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.

Those are the fire trine and the water trine. Exactly.

Once you see why, you cannot unsee it. The Sun owns Leo, which is a fire sign. A sign sits in a trine from every other member of its own trine, by definition of what a trine is. So from any fire ascendant, Leo lands in the 1st, the 5th or the 9th, and the Sun is automatically a trine lord. The Moon owns Cancer and gets the water trine for the identical reason.

The five grahas that own two signs cannot do this, because their pair straddles two elements. They pick up a fourth category instead: three ascendants where they own a trine and a difficult house at once, which is where the honest disagreements between astrologers live.

## Six ascendants get a stone that is better than merely allowed

A yogakaraka is a graha that owns a kendra other than the 1st and a trine other than the 1st, at the same time. It is the single strongest recommendation the system can make, and only six of the twelve ascendants have one at all.

- Taurus rising: Saturn owns the 9th and 10th, so blue sapphire
- Cancer rising: Mars owns the 5th and 10th, so red coral
- Leo rising: Mars owns the 4th and 9th, so red coral again
- Libra rising: Saturn owns the 4th and 5th, so blue sapphire again
- Capricorn rising: Venus owns the 5th and 10th, so diamond
- Aquarius rising: Venus owns the 4th and 9th, so diamond again

Notice which stones appear and which do not. Only Mars, Venus and Saturn ever produce a yogakaraka, so the strongest licence in the system is available for three stones out of nine. Ruby, pearl, emerald and yellow sapphire can never reach it for anyone, which matters before you read a sales page describing pukhraj as the king of stones. ## What our own software was doing, and what we changed

While researching this we audited the code that generates the remedies section of our paid reports. It selected a gemstone for the current mahadasha lord, and for every debilitated planet in the chart, and it never once looked at the ascendant. The words "ascendant" and "lagna" appeared zero times in the whole class.

We measured what that meant. Across twelve thousand real births, the recommendation it produced included at least one refused stone for **30.93% of readers**. Its primary pick was a functional malefic 19.82% of the time and a node, where no lordship rule reaches at all, another 22.43% of the time. Only 19.35% of the time was its lead recommendation a stone the classical rule would actually license.

What made it worse is that a different file in the same codebase already knew better. Our Sade Sati module has carried a warning for months that blue sapphire amplifies Saturn rather than calming it. One part of the software gave the caution and another part ignored it.

That is fixed now. The engine reads the rising sign, classifies the graha by the houses it owns, and refuses the stone when the classification says to, with the reason written out. The mantra, the daan and the fast still come through in full, and the next section is why that distinction matters more than anything else here.

## Strengthening and propitiating are not the same act

This is the sentence the whole cluster hangs on. A stone strengthens. A mantra, a charitable gift and a fast propitiate. Those are different operations and they carry different risks.

Strengthening asks a graha to do more of what it already does in your chart. If that graha rules your 6th and your 12th, doing more is not obviously what you want. Propitiating asks for a smoother relationship with the same graha without amplifying its output, which is why no ascendant test restricts it and why every one of the  [nine planetary mantras](https://mahadasha.com/mantras-in-vedic-astrology)  is open to all twelve rising signs.

The practical upshot: if a stone is refused for you, you are not out of options. You have lost one of the twelve or so remedial instruments and kept the rest. Most people treat the stone as the whole subject because it is the part somebody sells.

## Two of the nine stones sit outside the rule entirely

Hessonite belongs to Rahu and lehsunia to Ketu, and the nodes own no sign. Not "own a difficult sign" and not "own an ambiguous one". They own nothing, so the lordship test that licenses or refuses the other seven cannot be run on them for any ascendant.

The gap shows up in small ways all through the tradition. Our own gemstone table gives both stones Saturday as their wearing day, because there is no weekday belonging to a node to give them and the table has to borrow one from somewhere.

That is not a reason to say the two stones do nothing. It is a reason to notice that a shop recommending gomed "because Rahu is in your 8th house" is making an argument the classical framework does not supply.

## Weight, and a unit that is not what it looks like

A carat is exactly 200 milligrams, fixed by international agreement, and every gem lab on earth uses that number. The ratti is a traditional Indian seed weight and it is not standardised in the same way, so a stone described as five ratti and a stone described as five carats are not the same object.

The weights our own engine carries, in carats: ruby 3 to 5, pearl 4 to 7, red coral 5 to 9, emerald 3 to 6, yellow sapphire 4 to 7, diamond 0.5 to 1, blue sapphire 4 to 7, hessonite 5 to 8, cat's eye 5 to 8. Diamond is by far the lightest prescription in the set and there is no astrological reason for it.

## Frequently asked questions about gemstones in Vedic astrology

### Do gemstones in Vedic astrology work for everyone?

Not in the sense the question usually means. Each of the seven lordship-bearing stones is licensed for three of the twelve ascendants and refused for three, and the average person is cleared for 1.75 stones out of nine. So a stone that helps one reader is, for a different reader, the exact thing to avoid.

### Can I wear more than one stone at a time?

Arithmetically you have at most three that pass the test, and only Pisces rising has three. Two is the common case. Whether wearing two at once is wise is a judgement about your specific chart rather than something the table settles, and it is worth noting that two licensed stones can belong to grahas that are natural enemies.

### What if my birth time is uncertain?

Then this entire question is unanswerable until you fix it, because the rising sign changes roughly every two hours and it is the only input. ### Is a substitute stone the same as the real one?

The classical substitutes exist mainly as a cost measure, and the licensing question does not change: a substitute for a refused stone is still feeding the same graha. If yellow sapphire is refused for your ascendant, yellow topaz is refused for the same reason.

### Does a debilitated planet need its stone?

This is the assumption our own software made and it is the one worth dropping. Debilitation is a statement about strength; functional status is a statement about ownership. They are independent, and we measured 14.11% of charts where a debilitated graha is also a functional malefic for that ascendant. In those charts the planet is weak and you want it to stay that way.
