Those are two different axes and both readings are correct. An emerald gemstone, panna, belongs to Mercury, and Mercury produces the one case in this cluster that reads like a contradiction until you look at what the two labels are actually measuring. Mercury owns Gemini and Virgo. For a Taurus ascendant that puts them on the 2nd and the 5th. The 5th is a trine, so Mercury is a functional benefic and the emerald is licensed. The 2nd is a maraka house, so Mercury is simultaneously a maraka lord. Both statements are true of the same graha at the same time. ## Who the emerald gemstone is for Taurus, Gemini and Virgo rising. - **Taurus rising:** the 2nd and the 5th. Licensed through the trine, and a maraka through the 2nd. - **Gemini rising:** the 1st and the 4th. Mercury is the ascendant lord itself, and the 4th is an angle. - **Virgo rising:** the 1st and the 10th. Ascendant lord again, with the strongest angle. Taurus is the one that needs the explanation. ## Licensed and maraka are two different questions Functional status asks whether the graha owns houses this ascendant wants strengthened. Maraka status asks whether it owns the 2nd or the 7th, which classical astrology associates with the end of life. Those are separate axes and a graha can score on both. Five of the twelve ascendants have at least one graha in that position: Taurus with the emerald, Virgo with the diamond, Scorpio with the yellow sapphire, Capricorn with the blue sapphire, and Pisces with the red coral. It is not a rare configuration and it is not an error in the system. The practical reading most astrologers settle on is that trine lordship dominates. A maraka is doing its maraka work in a specific window rather than continuously, and the trine is structural. But it is a judgement, not a derivation, and anyone telling you the question is settled is overstating. ## Three ascendants where panna feeds the wrong house Aries, Cancer and Scorpio rising. Mercury owns the 3rd and 6th for Aries, the 3rd and 12th for Cancer, and the 8th and 11th for Scorpio. A difficult house in each case, and no trine anywhere. Scorpio is the sharpest. Mercury there owns the 8th, and panna is prescribed for communication, study and business more than for anything else. A Scorpio ascendant asking for clearer thinking gets a stone that feeds their 8th lord, which is not what the request was. The other three of the twelve, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius, land in the split category: Mercury owns a trine and a difficult house at once. Libra rising gives it the 9th and the 12th, Capricorn the 6th and the 9th, Aquarius the 5th and the 8th. Genuinely arguable, all three. ## Mercury is the only graha exalted in a sign it already owns Virgo is Mercury's own sign and also its sign of exaltation. Nothing else in the nine does this. Every other graha has its own sign and its exaltation in different places, which means for every other graha the ascendant that puts it in own-sign and the ascendant that puts it in exaltation are two different ascendants. For Mercury they collapse into one. That has a small practical consequence when reading a chart: for any given house, there is one ascendant that puts Gemini there and a different one that puts Virgo there, and the second carries both dignities at once. It also means Mercury never gets the split you see with, say, Jupiter, where a chart can have the graha strong by house and weak by sign in a way that pulls the reading apart. ## Mercury can never be a yogakaraka Gemini and Virgo are three signs apart. To own an angle and a trine at once, excluding the 1st, a graha's two signs have to be one, two or five signs apart. Three is not on that list, so no ascendant anywhere gives Mercury the top classification. Jupiter is disqualified by exactly the same arithmetic, since Sagittarius and Pisces are also three apart. So the two grahas most often described as gentle and benefic are the two that can never reach the strongest recommendation the system produces, while Saturn and Mars can. Natural benefic and functional benefic are unrelated ideas and this is the cleanest demonstration of it in the whole cluster. ## How many people this clears Taurus, Gemini and Virgo rise 7.88%, 9.25% and 9.59% of the time respectively at Delhi, measured across 12,000 real births. Add them and the emerald is licensed for 26.72% of people, the highest licensed share of any stone in the set, against a flat prediction of 25.00%. It gets there because all three of its licensed ascendants are among the more common ones. Compare the diamond at 23.03%: two of its three sit in the bottom four by frequency. The gap between the highest and lowest licensed share across the seven stones is 3.69 percentage points, which is small, and it comes entirely from where each licensed set happens to fall against rising times that run from 6.11% for Pisces to 9.82% for Scorpio. The refused share for emerald is 25.78%, so slightly more than a quarter of people are being sold a stone the classical rule declines for them whenever panna is recommended without asking for a birth time. ## Combustion, and why it matters here more than elsewhere Mercury never strays more than about twenty eight degrees from the Sun. That tether is a fact about the orbit, not about any chart, and it has a consequence for this stone that no other stone shares: Mercury is burnt by the Sun far more often than anything else is. Across real charts the Sun and Mercury share a sign 51.2% of the time, and about three fifths of those are inside the fourteen degree orb that counts as combustion. That has nothing to do with astrology and everything to do with what you are buying, since an untreated emerald and an oiled one are priced very differently and look similar.
