Those are the trines, so a planet's third can shift its sign but never its element, and the chart of courage is locked to the element you were born with. # Drekkana Chart (D3): Siblings, Courage and Self-Driven Effort The Drekkana chart (D3) is read for brothers and sisters, for physical courage, and for the kind of effort nobody asks you to make. It is the third house opened out into a chart of its own, and it belongs to Parashara's smallest strength group, so it has been in continuous use for as long as anything in this system has. It also has a structural property that no other varga shares, and the property is the reading. ## How the Drekkana chart (D3) is derived Each sign splits into three parts of exactly 10 degrees. The first third stays in the sign itself. The second goes to the fifth sign from it. The third goes to the ninth sign from it. A planet at 24 degrees Capricorn sits in the last third. Nine signs on from Capricorn, counting Capricorn as the first, gives Virgo. That planet reads as Capricorn in the birth chart and Virgo in the D3. Now look at what those three destinations have in common. The first, fifth and ninth from any sign are its trines, and trines share an element. Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo are all earth. Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are all fire. So the D3 can move a planet two signs away and it can never move it out of the element it was born in. ## The element you cannot leave Every other varga is free to send a fiery planet into a watery sign. This one is not. Whatever else the Drekkana says about your capacity for direct action, it says it in the same elemental language the birth chart used. That is a real constraint on how much the chart can disagree with the D1, and it makes the D3 unusually stable to read. A planet in a water sign is a planet approaching a fight sideways, in the birth chart and in the Drekkana both. What changes is the mode: a cardinal planet may land in a fixed third and lose some of its willingness to start, or a fixed planet may land in a mutable third and become more adaptable than the birth chart suggested. The other consequence is arithmetic. There are 36 drekkanas in the zodiac, which is why the decanate scheme in Western astrology has the same count. The two systems divide the circle identically and assign the pieces by different rules, so the boundaries agree and the meanings do not. ## What the Drekkana chart (D3) shows Siblings, in the plain sense, and the tradition is specific about which. The third house is taken for younger siblings and the eleventh for elder ones, and that split carries into the D3 rather than being flattened. A well supported third house of the Drekkana with a struggling eleventh describes somebody close to a younger brother or sister and distant from an older one, which is an ordinary enough thing to find in a family. Courage, meaning the willingness to act without a guarantee. Mars is the karaka here and its condition in the D3 carries more weight than almost anything else in the chart. Effort that originates with you. This is the part people underrate. The third house is self driven work as opposed to duty, the project nobody commissioned, the skill picked up because it was interesting. A strong D3 with an unremarkable birth chart often belongs to somebody who got where they are by doing more than was required of them. The third house carries other significations that do not come into this chart, and the omission is deliberate. Communication, short journeys, the hands, neighbours: those stay birth chart matters. The Drekkana takes the branch of the third house that concerns siblings and personal daring, and leaves the rest where it was. Reading a D3 for whether somebody is a good writer is a category error, however tempting the house connection looks. What it does not cover is longevity, despite a persistent belief otherwise. Certain drekkanas carry ominous classical names, and a few older texts use them in death enquiries. That technique is narrow, disputed, and badly served by casual use. Nothing about a sinister drekkana name entitles anyone to a conclusion about a lifespan. ## Reading it beside your third house Start in the birth chart. Note what occupies the third house, where its lord went, and how Mars is doing. If [Mars occupies the 3rd house](https://mahadasha.com/mars-in-3rd-house) of the D1 you already have a chart inclined towards direct action, and the Drekkana will tell you whether that inclination is supported or spent. Then move across. Find the lord of the birth chart's third house in the D3 and read its dignity there. A third lord that arrives in a friendly sign in a kendra of the Drekkana describes courage that produces something. The same lord in a difficult sign describes effort that goes in and does not come back out, and that pattern shows up in charts full of unfinished projects. Check the D3 ascendant lord last. It sets the general tone of the varga the way the birth ascendant lord does for the whole chart, and a dignified one lifts everything else in the reading. ## Where the D3 sits in the classical scheme The Drekkana is in the Shadvarga, so it is one of the six charts used in the oldest strength calculation, alongside the D1, D2, D9, D12 and D30. Ten degree divisions also make it forgiving about birth time. The ascendant crosses 10 degrees in roughly forty minutes, so a recorded time that is off by a quarter of an hour usually leaves the D3 lagna intact.
