# Combustion in Vedic Astrology: What Astangata Measures

> Two charts in three carry at least one burnt planet, and the orb that decides it varies from 10 degrees to 17 depending on which body you are asking about.

Combustion in Vedic astrology describes a planet that has come close enough to the Sun to disappear from the sky. The Sanskrit term is astangata, from asta, meaning set. The planet has not gone anywhere. It has simply stopped being visible, drowned in the glare of something a hundred thousand times brighter.

That is the entire physical basis, and the interpretive rule follows it more closely than most astrological rules follow anything. A burnt planet still does its work. It just does not get seen doing it.

Before any of the interpretation, the frequency. Across 12,000 sampled birth charts, 67.67% carried at least one combust planet. Two readers in three. Like retrograde motion, this is a description of the population rather than a mark against part of it.

## The orbs, and what the numbers are tracking

Combustion is decided by an orb: how close to the Sun the planet has to get. The orb is different for every body, and here is the table this site uses, alongside how often each planet actually falls inside it.

The orbs are not arbitrary and they are not ranked by importance. They track apparent brightness. Venus is the brightest thing in the sky after the Sun and Moon, so it survives closest to the glare and gets the narrowest orb. Mars near the Sun is on the far side of its orbit, small and faint, so it vanishes early and gets the widest.

Jupiter at 11 and Saturn at 15 sit exactly where that reasoning predicts, since Jupiter is several times brighter than Saturn at conjunction. Four of the six are explained by brightness alone. Mercury and the Moon are the two where other considerations came in, and different traditions handle them differently.

Notice how badly frequency and orb correlate. Mercury has a middling orb and the highest burn rate by a wide margin, because it can never get far from the Sun in the first place. Mars has the widest orb and burns less than half as often. The orb sets the threshold; the orbit decides how often the threshold gets crossed.

## Which bodies can never be burnt

Three of the nine grahas are exempt, for two different reasons.

The Sun is excluded because the condition is defined by proximity to the Sun, and a body cannot be too close to itself. There is no orb entry for it and there never has been.

Rahu and Ketu are excluded because combustion is about visible light being overwhelmed, and the nodes have no light. They are calculated points where two orbital planes cross, not objects with a disc. Standard orb tables give them no entry for the same reason they give none to the ascendant. The Moon is not exempt. It burns like anything else, on 6.98% of charts, and because the orb is 12 degrees either side of the Sun, a combust Moon means a birth close to the new moon. ## A burnt planet is nearly always in the Sun's house

This is the most useful practical consequence and it gets almost no attention. If a planet is within 10 to 17 degrees of the Sun, it is usually in the same sign as the Sun, and therefore in the same house.

So a combustion is never a solitary condition. It is always a conjunction as well, and the house it lands in is whichever house the Sun occupies. Any reading of a combust planet that does not also read the Sun's placement has left out half the configuration. The exception matters for the wide orbs. A Mars 16 degrees from the Sun can sit in the adjacent sign if the Sun is near a boundary, so the two are burnt together but housed apart. Check the signs rather than assuming, particularly for Mars and Saturn.

## What combustion does to the reading

The classical position is that a combust planet cannot deliver results in its own name. The function operates, the significations still exist, but the credit and the visibility go to the Sun, which in a chart means the identity, the ego, the father, and the public self.

In practice the pattern tends to look like this. The planet's department gets run in service of the self-image rather than on its own terms. A burnt Mercury thinks in ways that support the identity rather than testing it. A burnt Venus values what reflects well. A burnt Saturn works hard at being seen to be dutiful.

None of that is a deficiency, and given the frequencies it could hardly be one. What it is, reliably, is a difficulty in seeing that planet's function as separate from oneself. That is a real and specific reading, and it is much more useful than the vague damage the word combustion suggests.

## Two conditions that never combine, and two that usually do

Combustion and retrograde motion interact in a way that is fixed by geometry rather than left to chance.

Mars, Jupiter and Saturn can never be burnt and reversed at the same time. Not rarely. Never, across 73,049 days of checking, because an outer planet only reverses when it is opposite the Sun. Mercury and Venus, on the other hand, reverse precisely when they pass between us and the Sun, so for them the two conditions arrive together as a matter of course.

If you are reading a chart with a burnt outer planet, it is a forward moving one. If you are reading a burnt Mercury, check the direction, because it is probably reversed too. ## Where the schools genuinely differ

Orb values are not universal. The table above is the common Vedic set, but tighter tables exist, and traditions outside the Vedic mainstream often use a flat 8 degrees for everything, with a much narrower band of under half a degree read as a strengthening rather than a burning.

The difference is not academic. Mars is burnt in about 15% of charts at 17 degrees, and narrowing its orb to 8 would roughly halve that. Somewhere around one chart in fourteen changes its verdict on Mars alone depending on which table the reader happens to use.

Which is why any claim about a combustion should come with the separation attached. Not that a planet is combust, but that it is 4.2 degrees from the Sun, or 13.9. The first is a serious condition on any table. The second is a marginal call that half the tradition would decline to make.
