Its four padas include two of the zodiac's twelve vargottama quarters. # Chitra Nakshatra: All Four Padas, Lord and Meaning Chitra Nakshatra runs from 23°20' Virgo to 6°40' Libra and is ruled by Mars. Its deity is Tvashtar Vishwakarma, the divine architect, and its symbol is a bright jewel. In the sky it is Spica, one of the brightest stars in the heavens and the one the whole nakshatra is named after. *Chitra* means bright, variegated, remarkable. It also means a picture. The month of Chaitra takes its name from this star, and so does the Chitra Paksha ayanamsa that the modern sidereal zodiac is anchored to. ## The architect and the jewel Vishwakarma is the craftsman of the gods. He built the cities of the divine, forged the weapons, cut Surya's excess brilliance down on a lathe, and designed the vimanas. He is the principle of form: the intelligence that gives shape to material. A jewel is the same idea compressed. Raw stone becomes a jewel by being cut, which is to say by having a shape imposed on it by somebody who could see that shape while the stone was still an ugly lump on a bench and everyone else in the room had already walked past it. That is what this nakshatra does. It sees the finished thing first. People born here have a strong sense of form. They notice when a thing is badly designed. It bothers them physically. They are usually attractive, often strikingly so, and they know it. Their taste is good and their standards are high, and both can shade into a preference for the appearance of quality over the fact of it. That is the illusion in the title. *Chitra* means picture, and a picture is a surface that convincingly represents something. Not every Chitra native cares whether there is anything behind it. ## Two vargottama padas, back to back A pada is **vargottama** when its rashi and its navamsa are the same sign, and the classical texts read that as a doubling of strength. There are exactly twelve in the zodiac, one per sign. Chitra holds two of them, consecutively. Its second pada is Virgo in Virgo navamsa, and its third is Libra in Libra navamsa. The strongest structural position in the star and the weakest Venus in the zodiac occupy the same 3°20'. For a nakshatra whose whole subject is beauty, that is worth reading carefully. ## All four Chitra Nakshatra padas in detail Two padas fall in Virgo and two in Libra. The pada signs run Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio. ### Pada 1: 23°20' to 26°40' Virgo, Leo navamsa The Sun takes the navamsa. Syllable *Pe*. The showiest quarter. Design as display: architecture, fashion, performance, and the kind of craft that is meant to be admired. Confidence runs high here and so does the need for an audience. It produces genuine creative leaders and also people whose work is mostly about being seen doing it. ### Pada 2: 26°40' Virgo to 0°00' Libra, Virgo navamsa Mercury rules both, this pada is vargottama, and Venus is debilitated at 27°00' Virgo inside it. Syllable *Po*. The technician's quarter, and structurally the strongest in the star. Precision engineering, surgery, editing, restoration, analysis, and craft done to tolerances nobody else would bother with. The Venus debilitation gives it a hard edge: this pada is excellent at making things and considerably less good at enjoying them, or at being easy to live with. ### Pada 3: 0°00' to 3°20' Libra, Libra navamsa Venus rules both, and this pada is vargottama too. Syllable *Ra*. Chitra at its most attractive. Aesthetics, relationship, diplomacy, interior and graphic design, and a real gift for making things and people look their best. Being vargottama, whatever sits here holds up under pressure. It is the most socially adept quarter and the one most likely to build a career out of taste alone. ### Pada 4: 3°20' to 6°40' Libra, Scorpio navamsa Mars rules both the star and the navamsa. Syllable *Ri*. Doubled Mars in a water navamsa. The design instinct goes underground and gets intense: forensics, research, surgery, occult study, and art with something genuinely disturbing in it. This is the most secretive quarter and the most driven. It does not want to be admired. Mars crosses the arc in about twenty-five days on average and returns roughly every two years, though a retrograde loop can hold it for months. Those passages tend to bring the perfectionism to a head, usually as a project restarted from scratch. The Sun's annual crossing falls in early October. Jupiter's five-month passage every twelve years is the one that turns craft into reputation. And because Spica sits almost exactly on the ecliptic, it is regularly occulted by the Moon and occasionally by a planet, which is a genuinely visible event rather than a calculated one. ## Work that suits Chitra Design in every register. The tiger yoni is shared with [Vishakha](https://mahadasha.com/vishakha-nakshatra) , and its natural enemy is the cow, which puts [Uttara Phalguni](https://mahadasha.com/uttara-phalguni-nakshatra) and [Uttara Bhadrapada](https://mahadasha.com/uttara-bhadrapada-nakshatra) at a disadvantage. ### Which nakshatras actually match Chitra Half the score comes from the stars by themselves. For Chitra that is Rakshasa gana, a tiger yoni, Madhya nadi and the Tara count, 21 points in all. Chitra's best partner on those 21 is [Vishakha](https://mahadasha.com/vishakha-nakshatra) at 19. It is the same-yoni pairing, tiger with tiger, which scores the full four; both are Rakshasa gana for the full six; and Vishakha's Antya nadi against Chitra's Madhya keeps all eight. In the second pada it sits at its exact debilitation degree, which is as weak as Shukra gets. In the third, vargottama in its own Libra, it is close to its best. Two adjacent padas, opposite extremes. Mars in its own nakshatra is precise rather than crude, and in the fourth pada it rules the navamsa as well. Mercury in the vargottama second pada is exceptionally exact. The Moon here is aesthetically restless. Saturn does well in the Virgo half and struggles in the Libra half. Rahu in Chitra is the classic glamour placement, and it is not always honest about what it is selling. ## The difficult side of Chitra Surface. The star can make things look finished before they are.
