Those are the four angles, so the chart of what you own is built out of nothing but kendras. # Chaturthamsa Chart (D4): Property, Home and Fixed Assets The Chaturthamsa chart (D4) is the chart of what stays put. Land, buildings, the house you live in, the assets that are not going anywhere. It is also read for the mother and for domestic peace, because the fourth house it magnifies covers all of that at once, and the older texts never separated the roof from the person under it. Some sources call it the Turyamsa. Same chart, different word for a quarter. ## How the Chaturthamsa chart (D4) is derived Each sign divides into four quarters of 7 degrees 30 minutes. The first quarter stays in the sign. The second goes to the fourth sign from it, the third to the seventh, the fourth to the tenth. Work one through. A planet at 19 degrees Gemini falls in the third quarter, since 19 is past 15 and short of 22 degrees 30 minutes. Seven signs on from Gemini, counting Gemini first, is Sagittarius. So a Gemini planet reads as Sagittarius in the D4. The four destinations are the first, fourth, seventh and tenth from the natal sign, which are the four kendras. Every planet in every Chaturthamsa ever cast lands on an angle from where it started. The chart of foundations is assembled entirely out of the positions the tradition calls pillars, and whether that is deliberate symbolism or a happy accident of the arithmetic, it holds without exception. A second thing falls out of it. Kendras from any sign are all of the same modality: angles from a movable sign are movable, angles from a fixed sign are fixed. So a planet's D4 sign always matches its birth sign for cardinal, fixed or mutable quality, and only the element moves. The Drekkana does the opposite, holding the element and letting the modality shift. The two charts sit either side of the same coin. ## What the Chaturthamsa chart (D4) shows Property first. Whether you own, what kind, how it is acquired, and whether it holds. A chart can indicate real estate in the birth chart and show a D4 that never settles, which is the shape of somebody who buys and sells repeatedly without ever quite living anywhere. Home second, meaning the emotional fact rather than the building. The fourth house is domestic peace, and the D4 describes its quality. These two readings come apart more often than beginners expect. A strong property reading with a difficult home reading is a common and perfectly coherent result. The mother third. Inherited property is a distinct case and the chart handles it. Land that arrives through a family rather than through a purchase shows up in the D4 through the fourth house connecting to the eighth or the ninth, since those cover legacies and the father's line. Self acquired property tends to run through the fourth with the tenth or the eleventh instead, which is effort and gain rather than descent. Two people with equally strong Chaturthamsas can therefore be describing completely different routes to the same address, and the route is usually the part that matters for planning. Vehicles belong somewhere else. That is the D16, which the tradition separates out precisely because a car and a house are different kinds of possession, one mobile and one not. ## What to look at, in order 1. **The fourth house of the D4 and its lord.** The fourth of the fourth chart is the centre of the subject, and its condition carries more of the reading than any single planet does. 2. **Where the D1 fourth lord landed.** Track the lord of your birth chart's fourth house into the Chaturthamsa. This one crossing explains most cases where property is promised and slow to arrive. 3. **Mars and Venus.** Mars owns land and immovable property as a natural karaka, Venus owns comfort and the pleasantness of a home. They answer different halves of the question, and a chart with a strong Mars and a wrecked Venus in the D4 tends to mean holdings that are not enjoyable to live in. 4. **The Moon.** Karaka for the mother and for emotional shelter. Its state here colours the whole chart. If the birth chart already places [the Moon in the 4th house](https://mahadasha.com/moon-in-4th-house) , the D4 tells you whether that natural comfort translated into a settled adult life or stayed a memory of childhood. ## Where the D4 sits in the classical scheme The Chaturthamsa is in the Shodashavarga, the sixteen chart set, and in none of the smaller groups. It is absent from the Shadvarga, the Saptavarga and the Dashavarga, so it plays no part in the older strength calculations at all. Its Vimshopaka weight is half a point out of twenty. That is worth reading correctly. A low weight in the strength table means the chart contributes little to a planet's overall dignity score. It does not mean the chart is unimportant for its subject. The D4 is the correct place to look at property questions and a minor term in a sum about something else entirely, and both are true at once. Birth time tolerance is reasonable. A 7 degree 30 minute division takes the ascendant about thirty minutes to cross, so a time recorded to the nearest ten minutes is usually good enough for a stable D4 lagna. ## A caution about timing This chart says nothing about when. Property arrives under the dashas of planets connected to the fourth house, and a D4 read without the period sequence produces a confident description of a purchase that is eleven years out.
